This is such a beautiful and expressive red wine. If you have never had Xinomavro before, think of it as "Nebbiolo adjacent."
Oenos Mittas is a small estate from Yiannis Mittas, a young winemaker from one of the oldest wine families in Naoussa. He worked alongside his cousin Kostis Dalamara (a well-regarded Greek producer) before purchasing 4.5 acres of his own vines in 'Paliokalias,' a site on Mount Vermio that Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis has called Naoussa's Grand Cru. He launched the Oenos Mittas label with the 2022 vintage after previously selling grapes to Domaine Dalamara.
This 100% Xinomavro is organically grown, from the Naoussa region in Macedonia, northern Greece. Farming is fully organic and certified, with a broadly traditional, low-intervention winemaking approach. It ferments with native yeasts in stainless steel, then ages about a year in a mix of small and large oak barrels of various ages, bottled with minimal sulphur.
This lively red made us think of Nebbiolo. Look for exuberant notes of cherry and plum, plus earthy notes like leather and tomato leaf, spice, and firm, fine-grained tannins. Xinomavro as a grape tends toward higher acidity and lower alcohol with balanced tannins, and Naoussa's soils (clay, limestone) and continental climate give it structure. Recommended pairings include pasta, game like venison, and mature hard cheeses - it's also excellent with lamb.
