Here at Hi-Time Wine Cellars our goal is to unearth the gems that provide maximum palate pleasure at jaw-dropping prices. This suave and elegant Lirac from Clos du Mont Olivet slips into this slot with aplomb.
Lirac has become a favorite amongst our staff for its subtle, yet generous, character proffered at mind-blowing price points and this wine has both in spades!
James Suckling gave this wine 94 Points and rarely do you see such a deliciously drinkable Rhone wine for such a great price. We are thrilled to offer this for only $21.95!
The vines are mainly located on the Right Bank of the Rhone (northeast-facing slope) and the grapes are sourced from the communes of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres and Saint-Genies-de-Comolas from no less than 12 lieux-dits. The terroir is a complex mix of Pliocene sands and the famous "galets roules" that absorb the day's warmth and gradually release it throughout the night to slowly and gently ripen the fruit.
A brilliant blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault (20 to 30-year old vines), this wine showcases the intrinsic spices and graceful aromatics that this domaine is famous for. Thierry Sabon, the current winemaker, seeks to express the subtleties and nuanced character of Lirac rather than depend upon mega-extraction and wood influence. He includes some whole clusters to improve the backbone of this wine and ages it in concrete to allow the purity of fruit to shine.
Upon opening, you are met with a perfumed nose of raspberry, black cherry and red plum aromas that share the stage with baking spices and a hypnotic stream of white pepper and wild herbs. An incredible palate that is silken and supple with a mouth-filling stream of red fruits, blackberry tea and a hint of lilac and candied violets. Medium-bodied, the dusty tannins are fine and lithe, with an intense delicacy that allows for an extended finish of crushed dried strawberries and a hint of smashed, brambly raspberry. Such a friendly and non-intimidating Rhone wine that wants you to enjoy the ride, not dictate the direction. We were bowled over by its approachability and pure drinking delight! A contender for a prime spot on your holiday table and gift list.
JAMES SUCKLING 94 POINTS - "This innovative Lirac is powerful and structured, showing excellent black-fruit, black-olive and dried wild-thyme aromas. Compact and straight with deep base notes. So much licorice in the dark yet lively finish. A limited-production cuvee dominated by mourvedre with a touch of counoise. Matured in demi-muids (oak casks). Drinkable now but best from 2027."
