Dobel was created by and named after Juan Domingo Beckmann Legorreta (Dobel being an acronym formed by the first syllables of Domingo Beckmann Legorreta). Beckmann was the eleventh-generation leader of Jose Cuervo tequilas, in collaboration with master distillers ("Maestros") Marco Anguiano and Luis Yerenas. It was introduced in 2008.

They garnered a lot of of public interest upon the release of Dobel Diamante, a blend of reposado, añejo and extra añejo tequilas, aged one, two and three years, respectively, in European white oak barrels, and then filtered to remove all color. The tequilas in the blend are distilled from 100% blue agave from a single estate in Jalisco, Mexico. Technically considered a reposado, it is the first ever multi-aged clear (cristalino) Tequila. Perhaps initially intrigued by their crisalino Diamante, their stable of other Tequilas has been received well by the drinking public.

Our staff pick of Añejo from Maestro Dobel sees their classic 100% Agave Tequila but instead of aging in white oak (the norm for their retail release) our pick has spent time in both Hungarian and French Oak barrels, which imparts a completely different nose and palate (with some similarities, naturally, to the 'house' Añejo bottling).

This nose is a nice mix of agave, wood and spice notes, with background hints of cacao, wild flowers, fried plantain and buckwheat. The mouth is soft and delicious with a rich viscosity. Flavors of agave, honey and minerality lead to brown spices (cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla) and stone fruits. The finish is soft but tasty as agave and clover honey flourish once more as the flavors slowly recede. 80 proof and very user friendly, this is a superb sipping Tequila (unless you want to treat yourself with a special cocktail!).
