WINERY NOTES: "Every wine tells a story. Kopke's Colheitas, however, tell a unique story. To taste a wine is to taste history and, in the case of this 1965 Colheita, it means remembering a remarkable event like UNICEF winning the Nobel Peace Prize for its promotion of "fraternity between nations".

VINIFICATION: Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful maceration to extract their colour, tannins and aromas, enhanced by constant churning during fermentation. This takes place in vats (lagares) at a controlled temperature (between 28-30°C) until the right degree of sweetness (baumé) is achieved. At this point, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine. A wine of high quality, made from one single harvest. A Colheita wine matures in oak barrels for periods of time that can vary, but never less than 7 years. It is then bottled and sold according to the demands of the market.

TASTING NOTES: A vivid amber colour. Impressive aromas, with notes of dried fruit and liqueur. Wonderfully balanced, with smoothness and good structure. Seductive and appealing freshness. An elegant and persistent finish."

WINE & SPIRITS - 98 POINTS In 2006, Sogevinus purchased Kopke, a brand with a history in the Douro that dates back to 1638. In recent decades, as part of the Barros Almeida group, Kopke had maintained a presence in the market with a range of Colheita Ports, but the quality was often spotty. This is, by far, the most ethereal wine I have tasted from Kopke, a Port that drives an emotional response as its flavors explode with the precision of fireworks. Everyone on the panel commented on the energy in this wine, its combination of freshness and refinement that makes it feel dynamic. One moment the rich scents of orange blossoms, orange zest and darker notes of schist tannins come together in a luxurious texture. The next moment, that sensual pleasure is a memory of richness, without any loss of satisfaction.
