ORGANICALLY FARMED

Tempranillo w/ Garnacha, small amounts of Viura & Garnacha Blanca

This is a modern style of Rioja, medium in body but with mouth-saturating, youthfully-toned fruit backed by spice, and a velvet grip of chalky Tempranillo tannins. Oak is not the major player as in typical Riojas...one might even call this Burgundian-inspired Rioja! It combines elegance and depth with the rusticity of minimalist winemaking. Clusters are only partially destemmed, leading to veins of herbaceous spice buried in the fruit. Concrete fermented, and aged 10 months in a mix of new and previously used 300L French oak barrels.

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2020 Viñedos en San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the village red, is quite different from the previous vintages, as it has up to 20% Garnacha — more than in the past, when it could be some 2%. They also used some 10% full clusters and uncrushed grapes for the fermentation in stainless steel and plastic bins with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in 500-liter oak barrel for some 10 months, and the integration of oak is better than with the smaller barrels. It's more expressive, with a floral character and perfume that is very attractive, and it's balanced and fresh, clean and tasty, with a medium body and very fine tannins. There are 3,800 bottles. It was bottled in September 2021 just before the following harvest."

"The young and open-minded José Gil and his Uruguayan life partner, Vicky, are major influencers in the new generation of Rioja grower-producers focused on single-site, organically farmed wines. Located near Rioja Alta’s famous San Vicente de la Sonsierra, most of the vineyards sit at higher altitudes that stretch the limitations of the region’s naturally long ripening season. Employing straightforward cellar practices with fermentation and aging in small to medium-sized barrels, José’s wines are direct, aromatic, fully flavored and driven by each wine’s terroir. José gives weight to the influence of the surrounding area, mostly from the mountains just to the north, and handles the wines gently to retain the area’s identity beyond the vineyards. The production is miniscule but on the rise." - THE SOURCE IMPORTS
