Seven decades is long time to wait to throw a coronation viewing party. When Queen Elizabeth was crowned back in 1953 the English wine industry was virtually nonexistent and French Champagne was essential de réjouir. Today, thanks to the earth's warming climate, coronation celebrants can toast the crowing of King Charles with a world class bubbly grown on English soil. Southern England benefits from the chalky limestone soil and cool climate growing conditions that closely mirror those found in Champagne. We would further add that, among the world's great sparkling wine regions, the bubbly now being made in the U.K. most closely replicates the sublime and subtle taste profile of French Champagne. Founded in 2008 by Simon and Nicola Robinson, Hattingley Valley is one of the acknowledged leaders of this quality efflorescence. They planted their first eighteen acres on a south-facing hill in Hampshire with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier using laser-guided planting technology. Today, led by winemaker Emma Rice, the firm oversees sixty acres of vines across two sites.

For value, casual entertaining, and royal watching, Hattingley's Classic Reserve is hard to beat. Made from a traditional assemblage of 53% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Noir, and 16% Pinot Meunier, this Brut is based on the 2015 vintage blended with the addition of 23% reserve wine. 19% of the total blend was barrel fermented in three and four-year-old white Burgundy barrels with partial malolactic fermentation. The following praise is taken from the pages of Britian's top wine publication.

DECANTER MAGAZINE 92 POINTS - "A complex nose of sourdough, green and bruised apple, plus savoury characters of soy sauce and biscuits. The latest release is based on the 2015 vintage, plus 23% of reserve wines. Partial barrel fermentation and malolactic fermentation, combined with 4 years of ageing on lees, give the wine lovely roundness and richness on the palate, with brioche, buttered citrus and red apple, followed by mouth-smacking umami depth and a pinch of spice on the finish."
