Ancestor is Halter Ranch's Bordeaux-style reserve blend, it is their flagship wine (think along the lines of Joseph Phelps' Insignia or Justin's Isosceles), and an homage to the heart and soul of their property, the Ancestor Tree. This tree is one of the largest coast live oaks on record, and is nestled amongst the vines of block eleven. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Petit Verdot, and 13% Malbec, grapes were destemmed and fermented in closed top fermentors, with open pump-overs two to three times daily for an average of 16 days, then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels.
The 2021 Ancestor exudes aromas of blackberry, blueberry, mineral, and slate, with a touch of chocolate. The entry is round and soft, bursting with flavors of blue and black fruits, cassis, and cocoa. The mid-palate transitions into a long, textured finish, layered with baking spices and soft, yet present tannins.
