As Shakespeare once said, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.”
After decades of producing exceptionally popular wines, one of California’s most noteworthy and beloved winemakers is hanging up his winemaking hat. Yes, Gregory Graham is retiring his eponymous label. And we know how devoted our customers have been to his mouth-filling Chardonnay, so we took the opportunity to take one last BIG swing at this wine, and managed to work out a screaming deal. So while our inventory lasts, you can get the Gregory Graham Chardonnay for just $16.99; over a 40% savings from our regular price!
Gregory Graham’s appreciation of grapes began at an early age in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, where his family owned and operated a 10-acre Concord grape vineyard. In 1980, Greg moved to California and enrolled in one of the top viticulture schools (UC Davis), and obtained his bachelor of science degree in enology in 1983.
Following an internship at Freemark Abbey Winery, Greg immediately landed an assistant winemaker job with Rombauer Vineyards. In 1985, he was hired as an enologist at Robert Mondavi Oakville, then returned to Rombauer in 1988 to take the head winemaker position. His work brought recognition to the Rombauer label, especially with Chardonnay, Merlot, and Zinfandel wines. While working as winemaker at Rombauer Vineyards in Napa Valley, Greg envisioned producing wines under his own label. He began to do so in 1992, using fruit he purchased in Napa, Carneros and Knights Valley.
The Sangiacomo family grows some of the absolute best Chardonnay in all of Sonoma County. Sangiacomo had been the backbone of Greg’s favorite Chardonnays he produced at Rombauer, so he kept Sangiacomo as the fruit source for his own Chardonnay. The fruit was selected from older established blocks, and each was separately hand-harvested, pressed in a basket press, and then fermented in one third each new barrels, one-year barrels and older barrels in a cold (50º F) storage area. After primary fermentation the wine was inoculated for a second, malolactic fermentation and aged on its lees for nearly nine months, with the yeast lees gently stirred bi-weekly.
2023 was a remarkable vintage, and one that’s going down in the history books for its overwhelming high quality and great potential for aging. The fruit aromas of peach and pear are enhanced with hints of toasted oak, thyme and caramel. The wine is very full-bodied, with flavors of ripe peach and tropical fruits, with a rich, thick finish. The oak is very well integrated, adding light toast to the aroma and accentuating the wine’s richness with flavors of creamy vanilla and toffee. This Chardonnay can be enjoyed on its own or with anything that calls for rich, full-bodied vin blanc.
This wine typically sold here for $28.98, and was worth every penny. But now…this wine has a substantially lower price, which somehow, makes it taste even better! Like we stated earlier, while our inventory lasts, you can get the Gregory Graham Chardonnay for just $16.99; over a 40% savings from our regular price!
Gregory Graham has fine-tuned a style of Chardonnay that helped to welcome countless people into the wine world. And whether you drink Chardonnays from California, Burgundy, Australia, or Champagne, we think that everybody can appreciate what he’s done for the wine consumer.
