This wine takes us to the village of Niederhausen, there lies the crown jewel of Donnhoff, the majestic Niederhauser Hermannshohle—a conical-shaped hillside of slate, with bands of volcanic soil and limestone running through it. Legend says it was named after —"Hermes' Cave"— nodding to a Roman place of worship, and a historic mine tucked into the hillside. It is a fitting title for a site that yields wines of such divine precision. "Hermann" also happens to be the name of Helmutt's father and Grandfather, who planted a good many of the Riesling vines in this 21-acre parcel.
From the legendary Hermannshöhle Grand Cru vineyard where 70-year-old vines cling to steep, south-facing slopes of black-gray slate and volcanic rock, this Riesling embodies elegance and finesse. Hand-harvested with extreme care, the wine ferments and matures in stainless steel and neutral oak—preserving purity, precision, and adding depth. The result is a late-harvest masterpiece: intensely aromatic yet ethereal, with layers of fruit, floral nuance, and mineral complexity.
Named "Best Wine of Germany 2025" by JamesSuckling.com, this noble Riesling offers energy, grace, and decades of aging potential—crafted from one of the world’s most revered vineyards.
We had the good fortune of having Cornelius Donnhoff at our winebar back in 2017, and people still talk about that tasting to this day. This wine continually gains accolades year after year. Don’t miss out on this classic!
JAMES SUCKLING 99 POINTS - "This is one of the wines of the vintage in the Nahe. That starts an explosive nose of Amalfi lemons, white and yellow peaches, lychees and kiwis. Incredible concentration and vibrancy on the tightly focused, medium-bodied palate. A spring-like lightness is married to awesome density, the two so tightly wound that they’re inseparable through the almost endless finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold." - Stuart Pigott, Senior Editor
ANTONIO GALLONI VINOUS 97 POINTS - "The 2024 Riesling Niederhauser Hermannshohle Spätlese, again made in small quantities due to frost, is from shale soils. Lemon and Reine Claude plum are pristine on the nose. The midpalate has a touch of crushed yellow peach flesh scented with lime. Despite its vivid slenderness and beautifully taut, measured nature, this has fill, poise and purity." (Medium)
