We have a fantastic everyday red from a historic Tuscan estate that will brighten up your table in any season. This dry, refreshingly electric wine is a confluence of reinvigorated winemaking, prime vineyard area, and a stellar vintage: it’s the 2021 Petrignano Chianti Classico from the Dievole estate, a pure Sangiovese that scored 93 points from Wine Spectator, and which we’re offering for only $21.98!
Located in the warm southern reaches of the ancient Chianti hill country, the expansive Dievole estate has produced wine and olive oil under various owners since at least 1090. The quality here made a leap when new owners took over in 2012, with a renovation of the vineyards and winery, including a conversion to organic farming . What makes their Petrignano (“stony place”) bottling particularly special is the higher-altitude namesake vineyard that’s covered in limestones, a source of crispness and minerality in the wines that counters the sunny warmth down here. On top of that, the stellar 2021 vintage made for especially well-balanced wines that combine succulent fruit with an electric vitality.
The 2021 Petrignano is truly a quintessential, dry Chianti Classico from limestone soils! Starting with subtle smoky struck flint, it gradually unfurls in the glass with a warm balsamy core reminiscent of sun-kissed Morello cherries in alcohol, lifting notes of raspberry and woodsy/floral blood orange peel, along with an herbal accent like rosemary. On the palate, there’s a refreshing stoniness and herbal tea-like quality accompanying the lightly succulent citrus-tinged red fruit, accompanied by dusty-crunchy tannins and a vibrant acidity that give this wine a refreshingly electric mouthfeel. The finish echoes with warmth, pithy citrus, and a mouthwatering sensation like a streak of iron. This is a great choice for tomatoey sauces, and meat dishes like chicken fesenjan or pork chops finished with rosemary! For the best experience, pour into a carafe or decanter and let this unwind for 15-30 minutes. Serve around a cool 62F.
WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "Supple and harmonious, this red delivers cherry, raspberry, rose and mineral flavors on an elegant frame. Balanced and fresh, with a lingering aftertaste echoing the fruit and mineral elements. Drink now through 2038."
