Our Wine of the Month for October is spooky in name only-- there is nothing scary nor dead about this treat which is a tasty, seriously-made wine! Which is why it's a perfect vino for the Halloween season and all month long as the weather does its thing (may stay warmish, may get cool, who knows!?!). Versatility and quality are two hallmarks we value-- especially in a value-oriented wine-- and this wine is a delicious every day drinker!
The bottom line is this wine is an incredible value. The intensity of fruit flavors wrapped in silky tannins in this full-bodied Cabernet made us pause and take a moment to admire this wine. The nose is loaded with mixed red and blue berries with hints of wood spice, garden loam and rosebush. The palate continues with black cherries, red plum, blackberry and blueberries with plush tannins and a sneaky-long finish. This wine has it going on right now and is ready to drink-- it simply shines.
The fruit for this wine is sourced from the Horse Heaven Hills-- predominantly from their Dead Canyon Vineyard (hence the name!). The remainder of the fruit came from Mercer's Eagle & Plow, Milts. and Spice Cabinet Vineyards.
Horse Heaven Hills showcases gentle rolling hills in a generally dry climate with hot summer days to ripen the grapes perfectly and cool nights which help to preserve freshness. This climate along with the well-draining soil are why Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in this appellation.
