Deep amber in the glass, this 13-year-old Cruzan opens with generous aromas of caramel, vanilla, toasted coconut, banana, dried apricot, orange zest and baking spice. The palate is smooth and layered, with sweet oak, honeyed fruit, cherry, allspice, cinnamon and a touch of barrel char building through the mid-palate. There is plenty of richness, but it stays lifted by a lightly tangy edge and a long finish of smoky oak, tropical fruit, cola spice and lingering vanilla. A very satisfying aged rum with real bourbon-barrel character, island warmth and enough complexity to make it a serious sipper.
