In Puglia, well-known as one of Italy's largest bulk wine growing regions, Cosimo Taurino stands out as a rare beacon of estate-bottled quality. The estate's long-established respect for their terroir and native varieties is inspiring, and their impact on the vinous history of Puglia is indisputable. Their wines are benchmarks to which the other wines of the region are compared, both in quality and in value.

The Taurino family has been growing grapes and making wine in Puglia for seven generations, but it was Francesco Taurino who started the family business after World War II to supply Italy and Europe with authentic Apulian wines. Their mission was simple, but not so easy: protect the legacy of the estate by continuing with the traditions that had made them so famous. Today they have eighty hectares of vineyards planted almost exclusively to Negroamaro and Malvasia, expressing the terroir of Salento through the lens of their beloved native varieties, showcasing earthy, spicy, and fruity notes and an authentic and down-to-earth winemaking style.

Notapanaro comes the name of the original farm on which the Taurino family began making wine. Comprised of 100% Negroamaro from a single 25 ha. plot with an average vine age of over 40 years, the soils are shallow, rocky, and iron-rich. Here again, the influence of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas adds a very specific saline quality to the wines. Farming is done sustainably, harvest, by hand, and fermentation and aging occurs in concrete, followed by a period of 6 months in barrique before bottling. This is a highly-individual, full-flavored, tobacco and leather-scented wine that speaks to the traditions of a bygone era.
