We just made a special purchase on the delicious Clos du Calvaire Chateauneuf du Pape. We tasted it several months ago and have been waiting patiently for it to arrive. The generous fruit and surprising complexity on this full-bodied Rhone immediately captured our attention. When we looked at the price, we were shocked and ordered every bottle that was available.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is showing beautifully with the sun-kissed style of the vintage and expressive Provencal aromatics of crushed violets, ripe cherries, garrigue, incense and spice. The palate is full-bodied yet silky with a beautiful finish.

Most wines from this great appellation start at $50.00 and up. Due to our special purchase, we are able to offer this great drinking Chateauneuf du Pape at $34.99!

Domaine Clos du Calvaire is formerly known as Domaine de Mayard. Today the estate is run by fifth generation winemaker Francoise Roumieux along with her two children, Nicolas and Coline. The family has always sought to preserve the traditions started by their previous generations and continue to make improvements by modernizing the winery and committing to environmentally friendly agriculture.

They began organic conversion in 2017 and obtained certification in 2020. When walking through the vineyards, the famed carpet of galets (round rocks) are no longer visible due to the thick, cover crops growing in and around the vines. This type of regenerative agriculture improves water retention and lowers the temperatures in the soils, slowing the ripening process even when the weather is quite hot.

Most of the vineyards at Clos de Calvaire are situated in the southern portion of the appellation and are composed of sand, limestone and pebbles. All grapes are picked by hand into small crates to avoid the risk of crushing and oxidation. The grapes are partially destemmed, and gravity-fed into concrete vats for a natural fermentation with native yeasts. Each parcel is vinified separately and later blended to form a whole that is better than the sum of its parts.

The quality to price ratio for this wine is off the charts, Enjoy!

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is showing beautifully with the sun-kissed style of the vintage. The aromatics are expressive with Provencal notes of crushed violets, ripe cherries, garrigue, incense and spice. These notes carry on to a full-bodied wine that has the vintage's charming, pure character front and center, yet still brings good mid-palate density and ripe tannins. It's supple, with a long, silky-textured finish showing great harmony and texture. There is a wonderful interplay of ripeness and fine-grained tannins through the long, elegant finish.

DECANTER 95 POINTS - "Provençal herbs and leaf tea on the nose, Turkish delight too. Full-bodied, smooth and plump. It's robust but generous, with plentiful ripe tannins; acidity isn't high but the wine feels balanced and the finish is long. All destemmed, fermented in concrete tanks, aged mostly in large old foudres and some stainless steel tanks. Very promising and likely to be good value."

JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "A supple, textural and lively blend of grenache, mourvedre, syrah, cinsault and counoise. The nose reveals notes of sour cherries, blueberries, violets, peppercorns, warm herbs and crushed stones. Medium- to full-bodied with chalky tannins and texture. Succulent at the core with a fruity and floral development and some tartness toward the vivid finish. From organically grown grapes."
