Owned by the Thienpont family-renowned for their stewardship of iconic Right Bank estates such as Vieux Château Certan and Le Pin, Château Puygueraud is a historic property that was revitalized in the 1980s by Georges Thienpont. Today, the estate is overseen by his son, Nicolas Thienpont who is also a winemaker at Saint-Émilion luminaries like Larcis Ducasse and Pavie Macquin. You might also recall that this is a sister property to the very popular Chateau La Prade.
Château Puygueraud received a 93 Point score from Decanter which called the wine, "Fragrant with floral potpourri scents, black chocolate and cool blue cherry fruit."
James Suckling also gave this wine a 93 Point score saying, "This is really delicious." We totally agree and have enjoyed more than our fair share of wine from Chateau Puygueraud over the years! The 2022 vintage, a warm, dry year produced a wine of remarkable depth and richness, while retaining elegance and precision.
The estate lies in Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, just a few miles northeast of Saint-Émilion, on a high plateau of limestone and clay soils that mirror the Right Bank's finest terroirs. These soils lend the wine structure, energy, and finesse.
The wine is plush and fragrant, offering aromas of dark cherry, plum, and blackberry with hints of violet and spice. On the palate, it's supple and concentrated, with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity balancing the ripe fruit. Notes of crushed stones and earth bring a sense of place and tension on the long finish.
Nicolas Thienpont has made continuous improvements to the vineyards and cellar. The grapes are harvested by hand and aged in a combination of new and older French oak. The result is a satisfying wine that completely over-delivers for the price point. In fact, we have this at the lowest price in the country.
This is a great wine to stock up on while it is available. Enjoy!
DECANTER 93 POINTS - "Fragrant with floral potpourri scents, black chocolate and cool blue cherry fruit. Smooth and succulent, an instant zing of acidity gives this life with mineral-edged tannins and plenty of strawberry and red berry juiciness on the finish. It's easy to drink but with depth and complexity in the touch of wet stone, bitter chocolate and slight toastiness that all add to the overall expression. Clean and focused with freshness. Enjoyable."
JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "This is really delicious, offering fresh strawberries, seashells and raspberries with some white pepper. It's medium-bodied with crunchy fruit and vivid acidity. Attractive brightness and length. Blend of 88% merlot and 12% cabernet franc. So lovely now."
