This is a wonderful dark and mineral expression of Sangiovese that shows restraint in an exceptional vintage known for its powerful, tannic wines. Casa Emma lies in a warmer part of the region, with stony calcareous-clay soils, and tends to produce dark-toned wines with a firm structure and ripe - but relatively fresh - aromatic display. The Gran Selezione is the top expression of the estate's Chianti Classico lineup, displaying their traditional style of savory fruit purity, mellowed by long aging in old barrels. It has enviable balance between concentration, structure, and elegance, and is just at the beginning of its prime drinking window!

The winery was founded in 1969 when Fiorella Lepri purchased the house and land (from a noblewoman named Emma) without first conferring with her family! Fortune and hard work have rewarded them, as today they are a highly-regarded estate amongst the ranks of Chianti Classico producers. It's a charming estate that's remained slightly under the radar here in the U.S., but we think that'll soon change! Practicing Organic and Biodynamic farming.

WINE SPECTATOR 94 POINTS - "An intense, fruity style, showing tension between its elegant side and firm, dusty tannins, while raspberry, cherry, red currant, rose hip, mint, pine and mineral flavors ply the space between. The finish is austere, yet this reveals lovely fruit and energy. 800 cases made, 350 cases imported."
