Burgess isn't just a part of Napa history; it helped write it. The estate's story began in the 1870s when the Rossini family first hand-carved its cellars into the slopes of Howell Mountain. However, it was Tom Burgess who truly cemented its legacy in 1972. By championing high-altitude, hillside vineyards long before "mountain fruit" became a Napa hallmark, Burgess pioneered a rugged, structural style of winemaking that challenged the valley's floor-grown conventions. Today, the estate stands as a testament to that original vision-a rare surviving link to the pioneer era of Napa Valley that continues to yield wines of profound depth and longevity.
The 2014 vintage is currently hitting its 'sweet spot.' After a decade of maturing, the initial rugged mountain tannins have softened into a velvety, sophisticated structure. Expect a core of crème de cassis and black cherry, layered with signatures of dried sage and crushed volcanic rock. It is expansive on the palate but retains a brilliant acidity - the hallmark of a legendary season that deserves a permanent home in the world's finest cellars.
Deals on top-tier assets like this do not happen often-especially with a price drop this big. The cherry on top is that 2014 was a superb vintage for Napa Valley, even considered "a dream vintage" by Wine Spectator. This is a rare moment where the price allows you to enjoy a $145 mountain Cabernet as an everyday luxury. Whether you are looking to bolster your cellar with a proven legend or experience the heights of Howell Mountain for the first time, the 2014 Burgess stands ready. Stocks are limited, and at $59.98, they will not last long!
ANTONIO GALLONI 94 POINTS - "Burgess boasts a track record that dates back to 1972. The estate is located on the slopes of Howell Mountain. In recent years, the wines have been increasingly of note, which makes Burgess one of Napa Valley's under the radar gems. Winemaker Kelly Woods and consulting winemaker Matt Reid are doing terrific work. The Cabernet Sauvignon is made mostly from Burgess's Haymaker vineyard, which straddles Chiles Valley, while the Reserve is mostly made from the Howell Mountain vineyard that is the winery's home base. These old school-leaning Cabernets deliver considerable quality and personality at very reasonable prices."
"The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is creamy and intense, yet retains its classic sense of structure. Inky blue and purplish fruit, smoke, licorice, crème de cassis and dark spices build in a powerful, mountain Cabernet Sauvignon loaded with personality."
ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS - "It is certainly approachable already, so there is no reason to defer your gratification. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has slightly more density and richness as one should expect, nice blackcurrant fruit, licorice, a pure classic flavor profile, medium to full body, ripe tannins and a long finish with well-integrated wood, acidity and tannin. It is a beauty that can be drunk now or cellared for up to 20 years."
