ORGANICALLY FARMED

This site's character makes for a more nuanced Barolo that's dominated by soft, red-toned fruit, and is best starting around 6-8 years from vintage, though you can try it earlier with a couple hours in the decanter. As a powerful 'mid-weight' Barolo, it stylistically lies between their classic Barolo and their other single vineyard bottlings. Because of 2021's long growing season, this bottling shows greater depth, some riper tones, and a firmer tannic structure. The plots for this bottling face a bit more of the temperate afternoon sun (though in the shadow of La Morra's high ridge) on the relatively low ridge near the ampitheater valley of the town of Barolo.

KERIN O'KEEFE 95 POINTS - "From the MGA of the same name located in the village of Barolo at an altitude of 300m above sea level in a site with predominately sandy soils, the Brezza 2021 Castellero has beautiful aromas of wild rose, camphor, cedar and dark culinary spice. Elegantly structured and still primary, the vibrant palate delivers red cherry, licorice, white pepper and black tea set against a tannic backbone and firm acidity. Give this time to develop to its full potential...Abv: 14% Kerin O'Keefe January 2025 ©kerinokeefe.com"

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "The organic Brezza 2021 Barolo Castellero reveals an open-knit character that is subtle and elegant. This pretty wine embraces a classical or traditional side of Nebbiolo, keeping with the house style all the while. The tannins are fine and powdery. There is a pretty hint of sweet violet pastille or rose perfume on the close. This release of 4,945 bottles starts off in stainless steel for 10 months of fermentation and matures in Slavonian oak for 24 months." Try 2026 - 2038. - Monica Larner

The historical Brezza family winery goes back to 1885, and to 1910 with their first branded bottling. Based around the town of Barolo itself, their wines are traditional expressions of the subzone's elegantly-styled Barolos. Aging is in classic large (3000L), untoasted Slavonian oak barrels. The Barolos are neither filtered nor fined.
