Bodegs Breca has been part of Hi Time's Spanish section since the first releases of Garnacha del Fuego and later the higher end "Breca" bottling. The winery has amazing holdings of very old-vine Garnacha planted on steep slopes of slate. Grenache has been growing in these hills for at least 1,100 years and in Calatayud, the style is deeper, more black fruit, more body. This year, Breca released "Brega," a new cuvee from its oldest vines (two parcels-one planted in 1900, one in 1911). These old vines don't produce much, only 520 cases. We were first in line for this release and are happy we acted fast. Fans of Alto Moncayo will recognize the power, depth, and age-ability here (some of the same partners are involved), but the Brega shows less oak framing the pure Grenache fruit. Grenache has pretty, Pinot-like possibilities which are sometimes lost in the more powerful Spanish-bottlings, but that elegance is allowed to shine-forth in the Brega--marrying perfume and depth in a compelling and rare bottle of wine.

Aromas of dark fruits, wild berries, blackberries and ripe plums accompanied by nuances like chocolate, truffles and black liquorice. An intense and persistent taste that’s incredibly powerful, yet very complex and with well-integrated soft tannins, ensuring a long and elegant finish.
