Today we travel to Tuscany, one of the most popular destinations in Italy for many reasons but with wine certainly being near the top of the list. The importance and reverie that makes Toscana so popular goes back throughout history-- it is regarded as the genesis of the Italian Renaissance, helped shape the Italian language through the works of such luminaries as Dante, Machiavelli, Petrarch and many more, and has been a major influence on art, science, commerce and culture throughout Italy and the world for centuries. And as those who have spent time under the Tuscan sun can attest, the natural beauty and landscapes are breathtaking and delicious. Just like the wines! Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano all call this region home.
Such a complete wine! especially with how good this juice is. The nose offers up cherries and blueberries, scents of bramble and briar with background notes of loamy earth and oak spice. Upon tasting the bright fruits are definitely in the foreground with cherries once again in the lead as notes of boysenberry and mulberry round out the fruit-filled palate. The fruit is balanced by zippy acidity and rounded tannins lending firm structure to the bounty of fruits. The mouthfeel is lush and the finish adds touches of earth, wood notes and fruit leather. This Rosso is a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. The Sangiovese is grown on a calcareous clay soil, commonly known as Alberese. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are planted on the lomay soils close to the Arbia river valley. At 14% abv it's not too "big" to enjoy during the summer months and early fall. Pair with grilled red meats, tomato and herb-based sauces, burgers, brats and general BBQ fare.
