Balvenie 12 Year Home Malted Barley Single Malt 700ML is a 47.5% ABV Speyside single malt Scotch whisky built entirely around barley malted on The Balvenie's own traditional floor maltings. This expression spotlights one of The Balvenie's rarest craft distinctions — the distillery remains one of a handful in Scotland that still operates its own floor maltings, making this bottling a direct celebration of that heritage.

Quick Facts: ABV: 47.5% | Origin: Speyside, Scotland | 12 Year Age Statement | Distillery: The Balvenie

Production & Heritage

The Balvenie was founded in 1892 by William Grant in Dufftown, Speyside, and remains family-owned under William Grant & Sons. The distillery is one of the very few in Scotland that grows its own barley and malts it by hand on a traditional malting floor — a labor-intensive process overseen by a dedicated team that turns the barley by hand to ensure even germination. The 12 Year Home Malted Barley expression uses exclusively this home-malted barley, distilled in The Balvenie's swan-necked copper pot stills and matured for a minimum of 12 years in oak casks. Where most Balvenie expressions blend home-malted barley with commercially malted grain, this bottling isolates the floor-malted character to showcase its distinct cereal sweetness and depth.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Raw honey and toasted cereals lead, followed by gentle vanilla and a thread of warm biscuit. There is an underlying freshness — green apple and a hint of dried grass — that reflects the barley-forward character.

Taste: The entry is creamy and sweet, with honeycomb and malted biscuit arriving immediately. At mid-palate, butterscotch and light oak spice develop, while a distinct nutty, almost toasted-grain quality emerges. The malt-driven profile keeps the whisky grounded, with less fruit influence than many Speyside contemporaries.

Finish: Medium to long, with lingering baked oats, a gentle dryness from the oak, and a honeyed sweetness that slowly fades. A subtle peppery warmth appears at the very end, rounding off an exceptionally clean close.
