Two 'Limited Release' Gems from the Buchanan Family's Mount Riley
The popularity of New Zealand wine—especially Sauvignon Blanc—has been on a real tear for the past few years. New vineyards have been popping up everywhere, and production has increased across the board to try and meet intense demand. You might even say that some of the winemaking has become a bit...ahem...commercial. Nowhere is this more evident than in Marlborough, the acknowledged epicenter of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
Mount Riley, however is different. Founded in 1992 when owner John Buchanan decided to leave his job with New Zealand's second largest winery and return to his roots, Mount Riley is a true family winery, in the best sense of the words. They have ten vineyards in Marlborough and the winery is five miles south of Blenheim. Each vineyard brings unique qualities and terroir to the Marlborough blend. John's daughter, Amy, manages operations and his son-in-law, Matt Murphy, is the winemaker. Matt made wine at Craggy Range for seven years before marrying Amy and joining Mount Riley, and their intention is for the winery to remain in the family for generations to come! The wines are terrific, and really speak to the family's commitment to quality and artisanality, and we couldn’t be happier with their value!
The two wines we're featuring recently received some great press from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, so we're not the only ones excited about Mount Riley!
MOUNT RILEY "LIMITED RELEASE" CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT NOIR 2016
Winery Notes - The grapes that went into this wine were sourced from multiple vineyard sites throughout the Wairau Valley in Marlborough. Multiple vineyard parcels and clonal material means we can make a complex and complete wine with great fruit character and depth of flavour. Grapes were cold soaked, fermented in small parcels and aged for nine months in French barriques.
WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "Mount Riley sourced the fruit for the 2016 Limited Release Pinot Noir from the Gibbston Valley in Central Otago. It's a bigger, considerably richer wine than the Marlborough Pinot Noir, offering hints of ripe plums and cherries, ample weight on the palate and a long finish buffered by supple tannins."
MOUNT RILEY "LIMITED RELEASE" SAUVIGNON BLANC 2017
Winery Notes - Consistently rated Marlborough’s best value Sauvignon Blanc. This wine makes up around half of our production and is our most successful wine internationally. A fresh, vibrant wine with intense aromatics, great fruit concentration and a crisp, lingering finish.
WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "More complex and less tropical than the regular bottling, the 2017 Limited Release Sauvignon Blanc boasts aromas of grapefruit and cut grass. Flavors range from melon and fig back to grapefruit, which lingers on the finish. Fruit sourcing is Wairau (70%) and Awatere (30%)."
