SOUTH AFRICA

South African wine has a history dating back to 1659 with Constantia, a vineyard near Cape Town, being considered one of the greatest wines in the world. Access to international markets has unleashed a burst of new energy and new investment. Production is concentrated around Cape Town, with major vineyard and production centers at Paarl, Stellenbosch and Worcester. There are about 60 appellations within the Wine of Origin (WO) system, which was implemented in 1973 with a hierarchy of designated production regions, districts and wards. WO wines must be made 100% from grapes from the designated area. "Single vineyard" wines must come from a defined area of less than 5 hectares. An "Estate Wine" can come from adjacent farms, as long as they are farmed together and wine is produced on site. A ward is an area with a distinctive soil type or climate, and is roughly equivalent to a European appellation. The grape varieties in South Africa are known as cultivar, with many common international varieties.

  1. HAMILTON RUSSELL 2018 PINOT NOIR

    Item #: i_377599
    Bottle Size: 750ml
"Our low-vigour, stony, clay-rich soil, cool maritime mesoclimate, naturally tiny yields of well under 35 hl/ha and our philosophy of expressing our terroir in our wines – give rise to a certain tightness, tannin line and elevated length to balance the richness and generosity of our Pinot noir. Our Pinot noir is not overtly fruity, soft and "sweet" and it generally shows hints of that alluring savoury "primal" character along with a dark, spicy, complex primary fruit perfume."

Aged 10 months in mostly lightly toasted French oak, about 1/3 new.

Storm is an exciting new project by Hannes Storm, the former winemaker for Hamilton Russell. After 12 vintages crafting the brilliant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines for the iconic South African winery, Hannes was inspired to start his own label. We had the opportunity to taste this impressive debut and have to say we now have two favorite Pinot based wines from South Africa. Without a doubt, Hamilton Russell and Storm produce the best Pinot Noir we have ever tasted from South Africa! This should not be a surprise. As you would expect from a winemaker of this pedigree, the wine is fantastic, pure and flat-out delicious.

The grapes are sourced from the Vrede vineyard located on a steep northeast facing slope with low yielding soils composed of stony, clay-rich shale. The cool maritime influence from the Atlantic Ocean 2 miles from the vineyard ensures the grapes retain nice acidity and do not become over-ripe. Meticulous viticulture, minimal intervention in the cellar and a constant nod to the Old World give this wine its charm and character. Only 10 barrels of wine were produced from this six acre site with a tiny allotment being imported into the U.S. This is an impressive maiden vintage which we are thrilled to carry and look forward to enjoying Storm wines for many years to come!

Medium ruby in color, this wine is beautifully aromatic, showing thrilling purity to the fresh fruit with notes of dark cherry, plum fruit, rose petals and subtle oak spice. The pallet has rich structure with elegant, dark cherry and berry fruit, blue plum and baking spices with silky tannins and good acidity. This comes across as a well-balanced wine showing purity and elegance.
