WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "A hard, take-no-prisoners Port, extremely powerful and still closed when last tasted. Deep inky color, with concentrated blackberry and raisin aromas, full-bodied, with massive raisin flavors, a superb backbone and a very long finish."

WINE ADVOCATE - "One rarely sees this brand stateside. The 1985 is one of the surprises of the vintage. It has an intense nose of chocolate, berry fruit, and tar. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, powerful, and full-bodied with layers of fruit. It finishes sweeter than some of the other ports with a great deal of tannin."

WINE SPECTATOR 96 POINTS - "Wow everything has really fallen into place with this luscious, polished offering. Here is Wine Spectator Editor, James Suckling's, updated (2008) Web notes: Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with superrefined tannins. Long and caressing. Very youthful. Will improve for a long time. This is really excellent. Always has been. Just starting to come around. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Drink now."

When it was released Robert Parker scored this Smith Woodhouse 90 Points and opined that it could well be the sleeper of the vintage. Well it looks like Bob knew what he was talking about as this Port has developed into a real jewel. After nearly a quarter century in the bottle it has attained its apogee as it showcases seamless flavor integration along with consummate delicacy and polish. In the glass this '85 displays a medium ruby-red center and a pale garnet rim, while the bouquet reveals fragrances of dried cherries, sultanas, and figs along with some cigar box notes. Medium-full bodied with a velvety mouthfeel, this Port proffers abundantly rich flavors of red berry compote, caramel, and carob backed with just a hint of grip and spice in the finish. A perfect example of the dividends that are reaped by the long term aging of a properly constituted Vintage Port.

ROBERT PARKER 90 POINTS - "My experience with Smith-Woodhouse is limited. Is the 1985 the sleeper of the vintage? An astonishing amount of creamy, black-cherry and chocolate-scented fruit fills the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is loaded with extract, great length, and has super finish with plenty of fruit and tannin in proper balance."

WINE SPECTATOR 91 POINTS - " Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - " This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop... they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1985 is the sweetest and richest of the recent Warre vintages. Extremely concentrated, rich, even luscious, this full-bodied, intense, opulent wine has layers of fruit, a full-blown bouquet, and impeccable balance. The soft tannins and precocious appeal of the 1985 suggest rapid maturation."
