Very primary, high-toned aromas of urgent crushed blueberry and blackberry accented by spices and flowers. Sweet, pliant and vinous; not especially glyceral or unctuous but shows lovely framing acidity to the intense flavors of blackberry, black cherry, fruitcake and minerals. This suave, fine-grained wine builds nicely in the mouth and finishes with firm tannins, a restrained sweetness and lovely lift. A distinctly wine-like port, bottled for the U.S. importer by Niepoort. My favorite vintage to date under this label."$29.95

Grippy tannins grace the mocha- and chocolate-infused finish. Best from 2025 through 2055. From Portugal."
WINE ADVOCATE 95-97 POINTS - "The 2011 Graham’s comes from the five quintas that have been the source for many years (Malvedos, Tua, Vila Velha, das Lages and Vale de Malhadas). It represents a selection of the 131 pipes from a total production of 1,454 and is a blend of 40% Touriga Naçional, 31% Touriga Franca, 6% Sousão and 23% mixture of very old vines. It has a more “serious” bouquet compared to the Dow, with beguiling scents of blackberry, wild hedgerow, tobacco and cloves. Straight-laced, very well-defined and compelling, the palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and supremely well-judged acidity. It is utterly harmonious, with a pure core of ripe black cherries, damson, marmalade, clove and spices, and the finish lingers long in the mouth. The separation of “The Stone Terraces” vines certainly does not appear to have detracted from a great Graham’s. 5,000 cases declared. Tasted May 2013."$84.98

Fig and date notes balance the dark chocolate accents. Best from 2020 through 2050.—K.M."
One would have to go way back to the 1994’s to a find a Port vintage that has been as critically and commercially well received as the 2011’s. That said, Quinta do Roriz which is definitely one of the stars of this august class (as well as one of the rarest with a scant production of 350 cases) has managed to remain very much under the wine trade’s radar- but not under ours. After we tasted a pre-release sample last spring in San Francisco and noted how little it cost, we made it a point to buy all we could get. Our enthusiasm was seconded by the Wine Spectator this past fall when they gave it a classic 95 Point rating.
Comprising 110 acres of A-rated vineyards, Quinta de Roriz is one of the most spectacularly beautiful estates in the Duro Valley. It is situated on the south bank of the Duro River between Pinhao and Tua in the center of the Upper Duro Region. Its topography forms a natural north facing amphitheater that rises to 1800 feet while its vines are planted in an ideal range between 400 and 800 feet. At Roriz the schistous soil typical of the Upper Douro is joined by traces of tin and gold which impart a distinctive mineral structure to its wines. This 2011 marks the first Quinta do Roriz under the Prats & Symington ownership. It is a blend of 42% Touriga Nacional, 28% Tinta Franca, 18% Tinta Francisca and 12% Sousao. Virtually the entire Quinta is now planted in single varietal plots, allowing each variety to be picked and vinified separately. The wide array of varieties planted at the Quinta contribute to this Port’s great aromatic complexity.$55.98

The finely chiseled finish features mocha and chocolate mousse details and plenty of peppery notes. Best from 2035 through 2065. 800 cases made."$54.95

It comes in at 99 grams per liter of residual sugar and is unfiltered. A blend of grapes from Ramos Pinto's Ervamoira and Bom Retiro Quintas, this is very serious and very well structured. Its focus and fine finish are lovely. Brooding and stern on opening, it shows little. The next day, it exploded in the glass. Did I mention that it is pretty delicious, too? In structure, concentration and complexity, it is a mini-me of a fine Vintage Port, with everything in fine proportion and perfect balance. I'm not certain if this is my favorite LBV in this report--only because there were so many superb performances in varied styles--but it is certainly on the short list."$22.98

It comes with a bar top cork and 106 grams per liter of residual sugar. Inky black, this highly extracted Port has sensual texture and an unctuous finish laced with delicious, primary fruit flavor. It's a rather sexy LBV this year, big, dense and mouth-coating. It has a fair bit of power, too. For an LBV to drink now, this is simply beautiful. It is not necessarily expected to go anywhere--it's made for drinking now--but it can certainly hold if you choose to do so, barring cork failures.
