PORT

Port wine (also known as Vinho do Porto, Porto, and usually simply port) is a Portuguese fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It is typically a sweet, red wine, often served as a dessert wine though it also comes in dry, semi-dry, and white varieties. The wine produced is then fortified by the addition of a neutral grape spirit known as aguardente in order to stop the fermentation, leaving residual sugar in the wine, and to boost the alcohol content. The fortification spirit is sometimes referred to as brandy but it bears little resemblance to commercial brandies. The wine is then stored and aged, in barrels stored in a cave, before being bottled. Over a hundred varieties of grapes are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used. Touriga Nacional is widely considered the most desirable port grape but the difficulty in growing it and the small yields cause Touriga Francesa to be the most widely planted grape. White ports are produced the same way as red ports, except that they use white grapes—Donzelinho Branco, Esgana-Cão, Folgasão, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina, Rabigato and Viosinho.

WINE ADVOACATE 93 POINTS-"The Quinta Do Bom Retiro RP 20 Year Old Tawny Port has been seen before, but this is the new 2015 bottling. It comes in with 122 grams per liter of residual sugar. It seems even more interesting now, holding its own very well against all comers in my "20" tastings this issue, and adding concentration of fruit and aromatics compared to RP's lovely 10 Year Tawny (also reviewed this issue). Showing fine weight, concentration and increasing complexity of flavor over a week or so, it drank rather well, sometimes brilliantly. Its beautiful balance also makes it easy to approach; it does everything well and it has a lot of old Tawny flavors for a 20. It was certainly one of my favorite 20s in this report. This comes with a bar top cork(12/15)."

DECANTER 98 POINTS - "From a single estate where a quarter of the wines are more than 80 years old: soft and seamless, boasting waves of dates, dried figs, brazil nuts and toasted almonds. Suave silky texture and wonderful savoury-sweet length. Supremely good."

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - " This has a pretty amber hue, with complex flavors of smoke, honey, dried herbs and hazelnut. Long and rich on the finish, with zesty hints of anise and concentrated spice and toffee notes."

WINE & SPIRITS 90 POINTS - " The color falls at the intersection of tawny and ruby, pointing to the freshness that's apparent in the taste of the wine. The youthful fruit character lasts beyond substantial tannins, balancing the wine with density, firmness and length. A substantive 10-Year-Old to serve with a savory pear and almond tart."

The Smith Woodhouse Late Bottled Vintage is unlike the vast majority of all LBV's produced as it is bottled without any fining or filtration whatsoever. This wine is then aged in bottle for a minimum of three years before being offered for sale. The bottle-maturation allows the wine to develop outstanding style and complexity, resulting in a deep, rich mouth-filling flavors.

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS-"An under-rated producer, Smith-Woodhouse has turned out a port with an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color. This powerful port is moderately sweet, forward, rich, and full-bodied, with nicely integrated alcohol and tannin. While it is not one of the vintage's blockbusters, it should be ready to drink in 3-5 years and keep for 15-20.(10/96)"

When it was released Robert Parker scored this Smith Woodhouse 90 Points and opined that it could well be the sleeper of the vintage. Well it looks like Bob knew what he was talking about as this Port has developed into a real jewel. After nearly a quarter century in the bottle it has attained its apogee as it showcases seamless flavor integration along with consummate delicacy and polish. In the glass this '85 displays a medium ruby-red center and a pale garnet rim, while the bouquet reveals fragrances of dried cherries, sultanas, and figs along with some cigar box notes. Medium-full bodied with a velvety mouthfeel, this Port proffers abundantly rich flavors of red berry compote, caramel, and carob backed with just a hint of grip and spice in the finish. A perfect example of the dividends that are reaped by the long term aging of a properly constituted Vintage Port.

ROBERT PARKER 90 POINTS - "My experience with Smith-Woodhouse is limited. Is the 1985 the sleeper of the vintage? An astonishing amount of creamy, black-cherry and chocolate-scented fruit fills the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is loaded with extract, great length, and has super finish with plenty of fruit and tannin in proper balance."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS-"The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014 with 105.23 grams per liter of residual sugar. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. (Around 60 degrees Fahrenheit is a lot better than room temperature most of the time, to be sure, not just here.) Overall, the weight, complexity, mouth feel and grip on the finish still make this my favorite of the group of 10s submitted by Taylor Fladgate this issue, although it's close and there are some pros and cons.(12/15)."

eROBERTPARKER.COM 91 POINTS-The 2011 Late Bottled Vintage Port (bottled in October 2015) is a field blend aged for 58 months. It comes with a bar top cork and 106 grams per liter of residual sugar. Inky black, this highly extracted Port has sensual texture and an unctuous finish laced with delicious, primary fruit flavor. It's a rather sexy LBV this year, big, dense and mouth-coating. It has a fair bit of power, too. For an LBV to drink now, this is simply beautiful. It is not necessarily expected to go anywhere--it's made for drinking now--but it can certainly hold if you choose to do so, barring cork failures.

Novice port drinkers can do no better than to begin here: First Estate is a soft and glorious mouthful. It is an outstanding vintage character blend, made at the very first property purchased by the company, Lugar das Lages, in 1744. Rich, fruity and elegant, it is aged for four years in cask and is ready for drinking immediately. As enjoyable before a meal as after.

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS-"The NV 20 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 and comes in at 111 grams per liter of residual sugar. On first taste, this was simply Taylor: big, concentrated and serious. It was all that and a bag of chips, but over a couple of day it also demonstrated far more elegance. It seemed arguably better balanced than the 10 year old Tawny this issue. Simply filling the mouth on first taste, this shows fine complexity for its age and it does everything else rather brilliantly. Succulent and inviting, it finishes with waves of concentrated flavors. The fruit remains lifted and and it has a bright, transparent feel. It is hard to resist, often seeming like a bit of an overachiever. It's not the best tawny Taylor's submitted this issue, but it might be the best intersection of quality and price. (12/15)"

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS-"The NV 30 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled with a bar top cork in 2014. It comes in at 125.8 grams per liter of residual sugar. It isn't that I dislike the 20s or even younger Tawnies, but this shows what you get by stepping up. (Granted, the price is quite a step up, too.) This has that wonderful concentration of flavor, the molasses, the touch of treacle and the extra complexity that you don't always get with young Tawnies. Its combination of power, concentration and complexity also means that it lingers endlessly on the finish. It's one of those wines you will be able to smell on anything it touches for much of the evening. That's worth the price of admission for me. This is wonderfully constructed with that long, intensely flavorful finish. As with most such, it can hold indefinitely barring cork failure, but the bar top cork means that it is not really expected to be aged. Dig in. Make sure not to drink them too warm--60 degrees Fahrenheit or so works a lot better than 72 degrees Fahrenheit. (12/15)."

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS-"The NV 40 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled with a bar top cork in 2014. It comes in with 125 grams per liter of residual sugar. Big, weighty and mouth filling, this is an aromatic Tawny that finishes with acidity and tension. Gripping on the finish, its flavors become more interesting as long as it sits in the glass (or on your palate). It is not, perhaps, as sunny as the Fonseca, its sibling reviewed this issue, but it is denser and more gripping. Comparing to the Taylor 30 (also reviewed), I'm not sure I liked the 40 here all that much better. The 30 is a bit fleshier while this 40 is a bit more concentrated in flavor and aromatics. Perhaps some additional age also helped this 40 combat some of the aggression on the 30. They are both pretty fine, a difference of five to Midnight and five after, rather than night and day. It is still a fine experience and my favorite of the group. Don't drink it too warm. Room temperature is mostly too warm. The sweet spot for most tends to be 58-62 degrees Fahrenheit. (12/15)."

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS-"The 1966 Single Harvest Tawny Port (i.e., a Colheita) is a traditional blend, aged in French and American oak. It comes in at 183 grams per liter of residual sugar. Surprisingly rich and fresh, this seems younger than its age. The complexity here is not quite as great as with some and the nuances of molasses and the like are controlled. On the other side of the coin, it has a rather sensual texture, finishing with a sugary burst. Underneath is the expected acidity and a bit of pop. Overall, it is rather seductive and quite delicious. Note that this will be released in January 2016, part of Taylor's old Colheita releases.(12/15)"

Warre’s Ports are distinguished for their structure, power and softly perfumed nose. Warre’s LBV was aged in oak casks over a period of four years after which it was bottled unfiltered and unfined in 2003, then it spent another four years in bottle. Earthy and racy on the nose showing a rich plumy and peppery character. Youthful, fresh and fruity on the palate, but still a full-bodied wine.

WINE SPECTATOR 91 POINTS - " Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - " This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop... they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1985 is the sweetest and richest of the recent Warre vintages. Extremely concentrated, rich, even luscious, this full-bodied, intense, opulent wine has layers of fruit, a full-blown bouquet, and impeccable balance. The soft tannins and precocious appeal of the 1985 suggest rapid maturation."

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - " One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port."
