  1. BADIA COLTIBUONO 2017 CHIANTI CLASSICO

    Item #: i_302219
    Bottle Size: 750ML
    Wine Spectator: 93
    ORGANICALLY FARMED

WINE SPECTATOR INSIDER 93 POINTS - "A ripe style, this sports cherry, raspberry, violet and mineral aromas and flavors, matched to a tensile structure, revealing fine balance and length. Best from 2021 through 2033."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2016 Chianti Classico is a terrific wine and perhaps the best vintage made thus far. The wine opens to a medium dark appearance with pretty layers of wild cherry, redcurrant and mild spice. Badia a Coltibuono always does a great job of expressing the cool and somewhat wild nature of Gaiole in Chianti. This is a blend of 90% Sangiovese with 10% Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo. Some 128,000 bottles were made, and this is great news for all you value-wine consumers out there."

This wine, with ICEA organic certification from 2003, is the result of absolutely natural production methods using hand-picked organically grown Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes from our vineyards at Badia a Coltibuono.
WINE MAKER NOTES: "The color is bright ruby, the nose unveils layers of iris, violet, tobacco, black pepper and marasca cherry. The taste is well balanced, tightly knit with supple tannins, mineral notes, a mouth cleansing fresh acidity. Warm and persistent. Pair with first courses such as pasta, meat dishes and moderately aged cheeses."

Badia a Coltibuono is about one thousand years old but its prehistory takes us back to Estrucan times and beyond. As we know it today, Badia a Coltibuono (which means Abbey of the Good Harvest), dates from the middle of the eleventh century. Forest berries, spices, leather, moist earth and dried plum, layered in the aroma. Soft, round taste, well-balanced acidity and clean and persistent aftertaste. Very pleasing, and ready to drink. Coltibuono remains one of the most beloved estates in the Chianti zone. Over the past few years their wines have gained a high level of finesse and quality.

    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 93
    ORGANICALLY FARMED

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Showing beautiful results in an excellent vintage, the 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is a graceful and elegantly tempered red wine. It makes good on all the basic promises of traditional Sangiovese: the complexity and elegance of the grape and that fresh acidity. It opens to a mid-weight style, making this a perfect wine for roast chicken and roast potatoes. Pretty mineral notes appear on the close, and the tannin is beautifully integrated."

  3. BARONE RICASOLI "BROLIO RISERVA" 2016 CHIANTI CLASSICO

    Item #: i_305716
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 93
    Wine Spectator: 93
    James Suckling: 93
    80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio is a terrific wine that lives up to our expectations of a Riserva, while maintaining that playful informality that you don't get in the estate's more contemplative Gran Selezione. Indeed, the Riserva category of Chianti Classico has been largely overlooked ever since Gran Selezione came onto the scene some seven years ago, thus knocking Riserva off the top of the quality pyramid. This wine reminds you why you should take a closer look at Riserva. The bright aromas of dark cherry, spice and tilled earth are fresh and cheerful and are exactly why we are attracted to Chianti Classico in the first place. The blend here is 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in new and used tonneaux for 18 months. The mouthfeel is slender and fresh, making this a perfect wine for slices of steak, or tagliata, with porcini mushrooms. "

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "n expression of fresh cherry greets the nose in this taut red, yet this remains austere on the palate, with fruit, iron, earth and oak spice flavors bound up in a grip of tannins. Everything is in the right place, but this needs time. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2042. "

JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "This is a fantastic Chianti Classico Riserva that displays blackcurrants, dark plums, redder plums, tulips and cedar. Medium to full body, some really restrained and attractive tannins and a tangy finish. Drink now."

    Item #: i_302643
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 96
    85% Sangiovese (Sangioveto) & 15% Malvasia Nera

WINE ADVOCATE 96 POINTS - "The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels too weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red."

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 95+ POINTS - "The flagship 2013 I Sodi di San Niccolò is classy and polished to the core. In many vintages, the I Sodi di San Niccolò can be more overt and extroverted, but in 2003 it is a wine of cool sophistication and polish. A rush of dark red and purplish-hued stone fruits, wild flowers, mint and licorice rounds out things out. The 2013 is a stylish, captivating Sodi. All it needs is time in bottle. For my money, Sodi remains one of the world's most pedigreed under-the-radar wines."

  10. CASTELLARE 2016 "IL POGGIALE" CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA

    Item #: i_305041
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 94
WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale shows extreme focus and precision with a pretty succession of dark fruit aromas followed by spice, leather and baked terracotta. This wine exhibits lots of depth and dimension with extra ripeness that comes forward as cherry confit and dried blackberry. That ripeness is well contained in this classic vintage. This is a lasting wine with a generous array of flavors and aromas, worthy of an aged T-bone steak. The blend is 90% Sangioveto, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Ciliegiolo and the wine is aged in barrique for 18 months."

Made from 90% Sangioveto, 5% Canaiolo, and 5% Ciliegiolo grown in the Il Poggiale vineyard, the grapes come from an elevation of almost 1,500 feet above sea level. The combination of high elevation and low yields results in a wine that manages to simultaneously show both restraint and layered richness. This classic red holds great aging capability.

  11. CASTELLO DI AMA 2011 'LA CASUCCIA' GRAN SELEZIONE

    Item #: i_305130
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    80% Sangiovese & 20% Merlot

ANTONIO GALLONI 96 POINTS - "A wine of pure femininity and grace, the 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia is wonderfully fleshy and radiant in the glass. Rose petal, sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint and spices meld together as this effortless, supple wine shows off its undeniably appealing personality. Sweet, silky tannins wrap around a super-expressive finish laced with knock-out aromatics. The 2011 is firing on all cylinders today."

The La Casuccia vineyard comprises 12.58 hectares, of which some 6 were planted in 1978; the remainder was planted in 2007 at a density of 5,300 vines per hectare. The elevation ranges from 480 metres to 526 for the vines at Adine. Soils are fairly consistent throughout, predominantly calcareous clay. The vines are vertically-trained to the single Guyot system in 8.04 hectares and to the open lyre in 4.54. The vineyard is sub-divided into 17 parcels, all planted to the traditional varieties authorised by the production code. One parcel is planted to Merlot; its wine is produced only in exceptional growing years, and in very limited quantities. The first vintage was bottled in 1985.

Deep, very luminous ruby red. Multi-layered, full-volumed nose of fruit, ranging through wild cherry, tobacco leaf, black liquorice, and mint. Equally superb richness and elegance in the mouth, excelling in depth and balance of all components, including the tannins.

  12. CASTELLO DI AMA 2015 VIGNETO BELLAVISTA CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE

    Item #: i_302215
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 97
WINE ADVOCATE 97 POINTS - "This wine is one of the true protagonists of the 2015 vintage. The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista offers an unreal level of intensity and depth with profound darkness and perfectly integrated tannins versus acidity. This wine was not produced in 2014. This vintage only saw 4,200 bottles made. The wine pours forth with rich fruit that is tightly woven within the wine's generous texture. Spice, smoke and tobacco appear as brief afterthoughts. Despite the beauty of the bouquet, this wine is ultimately all about the finesse and the elegance of its mouthfeel and that subtle game it plays alternating between brawn and grace. Vigneto Bellavista is bellissimo."

From Italy.—B.S. SENIOR EDITOR BRUCE SANDERSON SAYS: “Castello di Ama’s San Lorenzo is named after one of the estate’s four valleys planted to vines. This wine is a blend of the best vineyards of the estate from vines more than 10 years old. Owner and winemaker Marco Pallanti ages it for 12 to 13 months in barriques 30 percent of which are new with the remainder one- to three-years-old. 18. FANTI 2018 POGGIO TORTO ROSSO

    Item #: i_305853
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    James Suckling: 93
Coming out of the ancient Etruscan land of vines is a wine that once again demonstrates how talented the Italians are at re-imagining themselves in the modern wine world (and doing it at reasonable prices)! Tenuta Fanti's "Poggio Torto" is neither a rustic throwback nor mass-produced, characterless product; this is a wine that reflects brash, young vines producing happy fruit on warm, Mediterranean hillsides.

It's the result of the hard-working Fanti family, which has used its extensive land holdings in the renowned Montalcino region in Tuscany dating back to the early 1800s to turn sustainably-farmed grapes into reasonably-priced wine without sacrificing quality. Their "Poggio Torto” is well-priced at its usual $15-$19 price tag, but we're able to get it to you for only $13.95! Based on how popular it was last year, we're predicting that this is going to be another "house wine" for many this season.

Just like last year's release, "Poggio Torto" is a thoroughly satisfying wine in its class: medium-full in body, with bright, juicy, freshly-macerated fruit like a blend of blackberry and plum with a twist of blood orange, fresh herbal & purple floral qualities like Lavender, all couched in a firm, velvet tannin background. From the judicious use of older oak barrels, and shorter mellowing time in them, you can find a subtle cedar background that adds dimension to the palate. And, thanks to another wonderful growing season in 2016, the wine has all that concentrated, delicious fruit ripeness without being over-alcoholic. The overall result is a wine that is hard to stop tasting! Even better, it is a great pairing with a wide variety of protein-rich dishes.

The blend of Fanti's 2018 Poggio Torto is dominated by the native Sangiovese, complemented by soft, plummy Merlot and floral, black-fruited Syrah, followed by a touch of herbal, dark-fruited, and firmly-structured Cabernet Sauvignon.

Do as the Italians and take pride in getting this wine 'a buon mercato' (at a good deal)!

  19. FATTORIA DI FELSINA 2016 "FONTALLORO"

    Item #: i_303403
    Bottle Size: 750ML
    Wine Advocate: 98
    ORGANICALLY FARMED

Over the years, the wines of Tuscan winery, Felsina, have been a staple at Hi-Time Wine Cellars by wowing us with their consistent quality across the range and vintages. Domenico Poggiali was taking a big risk starting the winery in 1966 when the market for serious Chianti was nowhere near what it is today, but that helped earn them a place at the top: building a reputation bit by bit over the decades, employing the highest quality of winemaking available even when it was uncertain that it would be profitable. It doesn't hurt that they ultimately employed one of the top Italian winemaking consultants, Franco Bernabei, who played a pivotal role in the Tuscan wine renaissance!

The Felsina lineup has been particularly strong in the beautiful back-to-back 2015 & 2016 vintages in Tuscany, and the reviews are proof. Our current lineup of 2016s share a common thread: intensity of flavors, a balance of muscle and elegance in a well-structured package. They are all made from 100% Sangiovese, organically farmed, and are made in a "modern" style, with a careful use of small French oak barrels.

WINE ADVOCATE 98 POINTS - "The 2016 Fontalloro is the best vintage of this landmark wine that I have tasted thus far. This is a very elegant vintage, with more volume in the mouth and precise notes of tar, licorice, camphor ash, resin and Indian spice. In a race between the highly competitive 2015 and 2016 vintages, I give a slight advantage to this wine. The warmer 2015 vintage shows more richness and exuberant fruit. However, this wine from 2016 offers a more focused and chiseled delivery. I am hopeful that this wine will continue to evolve and sharpen as it ages in the bottle. This is a beautiful wine to put aside in your cellar for ten years or more."

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 96 POINTS - "The 2016 Fontalloro is marked by vertical lift and a level of sheer structural intensity that is rare for this usually more sensual wine. Powerful, deep and also quite reticent, the 2016 is going to need a number of years before it starts drinking well. Even so, that it is a very special wine in the making is abundantly evident."

This 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is still a bit closed and tight, but this beautiful wine boasts all the best qualities of this vintage. It shows elegance and power, two contrasting characteristics that only work well together in the world's most achieved expressions. Decanter: 93 Points
DECANTER 93 POINTS - "In 2017, Giovanni Poggiali describes the work in the vineyard as focused on the vines' root system to reduce water stress. Harvest started 15 days earlier than average and at the beginning of September he did a qualitative thinning to get rid of any shrivelled bunches or those showing problems with ripening. Fèlsina's flagship wine, Rancia is still brooding. Plum and tar show up on a backdrop of vanilla and exotic spice. Though fruit is supple, layers of assertive tannins need time to loosen their grip. Appetizingly savory, this finishes with an intense, irony character. Drinking Window 2022 - 2032."

WINE ADVOCATE 96+ POINTS - "The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo (100% Sangiovese) is a wine that inspires a deep, deep breath into your glass. There's so much to take in and admire. So where to start? First, the wine shows a beautiful appearance that is thick and dark but allows for just enough ambient light to make it shine with ruby rays from deep inside. Then you have the bouquet that presents a solid wall of interwoven and ultimately beautifully balanced aromas. There is dark fruit, tobacco, leather, spice and polished river stone. Lastly, the mouthfeel reveals a similar level of extreme flavor equilibrium with very fine but still very young tannins. ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 94 POINTS - "The 2016 Chianti Classico Fontodi brings together all the elements that make the Fontodi wines so unique, but with an extra kick of freshness and aromatic intensity that is the result of a year with notable diurnal shifts during the growing season. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and menthol develop in the glass, but it is the wine's extraordinary balance and sheer appeal that stand out most.
