    Burghound: 92-95
STEPHEN TANZER, VINOUS 91 - 93 POINTS - "(this fruit was picked in early October, destemmed but not crushed, and vinified with virtually no extraction, according to Mounir Saouma, who added that production was down 50% from a normal year): Bright red-ruby. Pure but restrained aromas of dusty stone and violet; I thought I smelled something of volcanic origin, but perhaps it was just a remaining touch of reduction. The palate conveys excellent depth to the flavors of raspberry, spices, violet and milk chocolate. Very complete Volnay if a bit youthfully bound-up. Finishes with serious, broad, dusty tannins and excellent length."

    Bottle Size: 750ML
    Burghound: 92 "SWEET SPOT"
    Vinous Media: 91 Points
    Decanter: 91 Points
BURGHOUND 92 POINTS : "In contrast to the nose of the Grèves the reduction is not subtle and I would strongly recommend decanting this if you're tempted to crack a bottle young. Otherwise there is gorgeous detail to the finer tension-filled and ultra-pure flavors that finish with a touch of austerity. I like the balance and transparency and while this is not quite as concentrated, it's more elegant. Note that my rating offers the benefit of the doubt that the firm reduction exhibited by the nose is not permanent."

DECANTER-91 POINTS: "Aromas of red and black fruit, game bird, raw cocoa and orange rind precede a supple, medium-full palate with a sapid core of fruit, bright acids, and a chassis of fine, velvety tannins. 2016’s Clos des Mouches is shaping up to be an elegant middleweight. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030"

VINOUSMEDIA 91 POINTS: "Healthy medium red. Deep nose displays red and darker berries accented by spices, minerals and flowers; ultimately a bit blacker in character than the Grèves. Also more airy in the mouth, with a very fine-grained texture and harmonious acidity that makes the Grèves seem almost heavy by comparison. Lovely subtle inner-mouth perfume here. Finishes with nicely delineated fruit and spice notes, lively tannins and saliva-inducing minerality"

DECANTER 93 POINTS - "The Mitans is lovely this year, opening in the glass with a pretty bouquet of cherry, raspberry, subtle coffee, game bird and a top note of peony. The wine is classy and deep, with a rich chassis of velvety tannins and a deep core of bright fruit. The finish is long and incipiently complex."

Allen Meadows writes: "Pierre-Yves Colin described the 2016 vintage as "one where the growing season is still painful to think about as we had almost no vines that were spared from frost damage. It's depressing to know at the very beginning that your yields are going to be seriously reduced, which in this case means that they were off between -20 and -90%. Add to this a virulent attack of mildew that kept all of us constantly on edge as the wet weather made it difficult to treat exactly when we wanted. Thankfully the second half of July, August and September were basically ideal and in the end the vines managed to ripen what fruit remained to more than respectable levels. In fact, the way I choose to look at it is that the fine weather in the second half of the growing season didn't save the quantities but it did save the quality. We chose to begin picking on the 22nd of September and the fruit was so clean that there was essentially no sorting of any consequence. Sugars were very good as were the associated acid levels. Despite this some wines refused to cooperate in the cellar as some didn't want to finish their alcoholic fermentations and others balked at finishing their malos. As to the quality, I would describe my 2016s as ranging from very good to excellent though they're not monuments."

THE FINE WINE REVIEW 91 - 94 POINTS - " The nose here is floral. The mouth is medium-weight and shows good density to its dark plum fruit. The texture is velvety and the wine shows good length. It is a delicious wine, already. 40% new oak, 50% whole clusters."
