PETER LEIM 1+ STARS-"It’s dark and stony on both the nose and palate, de-emphasizing its fruit flavors, yet it avoids the vegetal character typical of the vintage, instead feeling savory and strongly chalky even to the point of bitterness, albeit in an appealing way. It grows in intensity the farther back it moves on the palate, finishing with harmony and length. This is excellent, and it will be fascinating to see how it evolves with further aging. Every once in a while a champagne comes along that you can judge like you would a a great wine. Paul Bara's Comtesse Marie de France, their finest, is such a Champagne. The nose is expansive, deep, and ravishingly complex. The palate is rich and winey and incredibly long. Stock up. These don't happen very often. —Kermit Lynch

  7. BEAU JOIE BRUT ROSE SPECIAL

    Item #: i_325801
    Bottle Size: 750ml
This exquisitely crafted champagne is derived from a mix of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay, perfectly balanced to create a Rose champagne that is one to be consumed when celebrating a special occasion. Light crisp taste, which is fresh and fruity, with the color of delicate rose petals.
The copper casing of both the Brut and the Rose were inspired by the suit of armor worn by the knights of the palace. They are crafted from 100% second generation scrap copper and each bottle is recycled after consumption. So why the copper in the first place? Believe it or not, it’s not just bling it actually helps save energy and keeps the temperature of the wine stabilized while it’s being consumed without the use of an ice bucket.

  11. BOLLINGER 2004 EXTRA BRUT R.D.

    Item #: i_352887
    Bottle Size: 750ml
WINE ADVOCATE 97 POINTS-"Fermented in oak barrels and aged under natural corks for almost 13 years, Bollinger's 2004 R. D. Extra Brut blends 66% Pinot Noir with 34% Chardonnay from 16 crus, 88% of which are classified as Grand Cru. The wine opens with a very clear, deep, rich and aromatic but also pure and mineral-fresh nose of crushed rocks, cherries, brioche, pain aux raisin, white nougat, chalk and ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits. Highly elegant and complex on the weightless yet persistent and salty palate, this is an intense, densely woven, firmly structured yet elegant, beautifully refined and refreshing "recent disgorgement" (February 2018) that reveals just a kiss of oxidative flavors that adds even more complexity. A great Champagne on its way to improve over many years in the bottle. Tasted June 2018."-(06/2018)

Intensely perfumed scents of raspberry, orange zest, white flowers and chalky minerals. Juicy and precise in the mouth, offering vibrant red berry and blood orange flavors and a complicating hint of brioche. The floral quality comes back strong on the very long, incisive finish, which features a subtle anise quality and smoky minerality. About 20% of the Pinot Noir here was in the form of still red wine."

  16. CHARTOGNE-TAILLET EXTRA BRUT LES BARRES

    Item #: i_375047
    Bottle Size: 750ml
After a brief a viticultural tutelage with Anselme Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne, returned to his family's domaine in the hamlet of Merfy. Merfy is situated on the Massif de Saint Thierry just northwest of Reims and its vineyards sit upon a thick layer of sandy topsoil which contributes a signature suppleness and fruitiness to its wine. Alexandre is one of the most curious and conscientious winemakers in Champagne and there is no place where this zeal is more evident than with his approach to his single vineyard Champagnes. They dramatize just how sensitive and precise his winemaking is. Chartogne's first single vineyard release was from the 2006 vintage and it was 100% Pinot Meunier from ungrafted vines in the sandy Les Barres parcel. That bottling soon became one of the most sought-after bottles of grower Champagne and one of the greatest expressions of the Meunier grape. Among the Meunier vines in Les Barres are scattered rows of Pinot Noir. Alexandre has finally incorporated these vines to fashion an exciting new expression of the Les Barres terrior. The firm's Pinot Noir holdings in Les Barres are so small that Chartogne needed to blend the 2012-2015 vintages in order to have enough wine for a commercial release. Chartogne-Taillet's other single vineyard cuvees are now strictly allocated "back room" treasures. However, because this Les Barres was a "first of" release we were able to acquire enough quantity to actually to put it on display and talk about it. Of course we are sure that once the word gets out subsequent releases will never make it to back to the cellar sales floor.

  17. CLAUDE CAZALS CLOS CAZALS 2008 EXTRA BRUT BLANC DE BLANCS GRANC CRU

    Item #: i_378548
    Bottle Size: 750ml
It’s not often that one encounters a Champagne that overdelivers on the promise of terroir as this does. As we noted seven years ago when the 2002 Clos Cazals toped this list, Dauphine Cazal’s walled vineyard is a most worthy runner up to Krug’s nearby Clos du Mesnil which, of course, fetches more than a thousand dollars a bottle. Planted back in 1957, the vineyard’s walls produce a wind shield effect that creates a warmer mesoclimate that results in riper grapes with seemingly bottomless depth and distinctive Chardonnay character. The result is a Champagne that, at first glance, is decadently broad, creamy and gentle with layers of pear, nougat, nutmeg and lemon candy that recede to reveal a mouth-filling salinity and long-playing acidity. All in all, this is our favorite Clos Cazals to date and is further proof that 2008 is turning out to be the best Champagne vintage of the Century.

  19. CLOS CAZALS 2006 EXTRA BRUT BLANC DE BLANCS 1.5 L

    Item #: i_376327
    Bottle Size: 1.5L
Clos Cazals may be one of Champagne’s best-kept secrets. It sits tucked away in the Mesnil-sur-Oger, a Grand Cru village that is located in the Côte des Blancs just south of Epernay. In Champagne, a village is considered Grand Cru when it has been scored 100% by the CIVC (Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne) for the quality of its grapes, a stringent and highly acclaimed achievement. Mesnil-sur-Oger has undoubtedly earned that accolade, evident in its Chardonnay grapes that thrive in these unique soils. Here, the soils can look almost blindingly white due to a higher content of chalk relative to most other villages in Champagne. One lesser known secret is that a substrata of Kimmeridgian soils are at their strongest concentration between Mesnil-sur-Oger and Avize, neighboring towns to the south and north, respectively. The Blanc de Blancs produced in this small village are amongst the world’s top echelon sparkling wines.

WINE SPECTATOR 96 POINTS-"There's power to this graceful Champagne, with the vivid acidity swathed in a fine, creamy mousse and flavors of toasted brioche, kumquat, pastry cream, candied ginger and poached plum that dance across the palate. An underpinning of smoky mineral gains momentum on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2033."

ANTONIO GALLONI 98+ POINTS-"The 2008 Dom Pérignon is fabulous, but quite remarkably, it was even more open when I tasted it a year ago. Bright, focused and crystalline in its precision, the 2008 is going to need a number of years before it is at its best. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the 2008 its chiseled, bright profile. Several recent bottles have all been magnificent. What I admire most about the 2008 is the way it shows all the focus, translucence and energy that is such a signature of the year, and yet it is also remarkably deep and vertical. In other words, the 2008 is a Champagne that plays in three dimensions."
