  1. BUEHLER 2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON "PAPA'S KNOLL" NAPA VALLEY 750mL

    Item #: i_206410
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Vinous Media: 96
Perched on a mountain top just five miles east of St. Helena, Buehler is a fourth-generation vineyard & winery dedicated to honesty, family, and high-quality wines. Many of their neighbors think the Buehlers are crazy, because the prices for the Buehler Family's wines are rather reasonable. Buehler charges around $45 for a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, while their neighbors charge 3 or 4 times that amount! For this reason, we say "kudos" to the family for keeping their wine prices modest!

There's usually just one "Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon produced, which they blend from various vineyard blocks: a melding of the different characteristics into one whole wine. However, in 2004, they gave in to the temptation and bottled a very limited amount of wine from Papa's Knoll's vineyard, which historically is only sold directly from the winery or through their wine club.

Named after the landform in front of "Papa's" (The late John Buehler, Sr.) house, this is their oldest vineyard block of Cabernet Sauvignon. The face of the knoll is steeply terraced with an easterly exposure, this three-acre block was planted in 1971, and is the only dry-farmed Cabernet block on the estate. Due to the ruggedness, yields from this parcel are a lowly two tons of grapes per acre. And dry-farming, as well as the light-cropped nature of this block, ensures that it delivers its bounty a full 7-20 days earlier than the other Estate blocks.

ANTONIO GALLONI 96 POINTS - "Buehler is another estate in Napa Valley that doesn't get anywhere near the recognition it deserves. The striking property is perched atop Conn Valley in one of the most idyllic spots in all of Napa. There are three Cabernets, all of them notable. The Papa's Knoll is the most potent of the three, but all the wines are marked by a real sense of finesse that is impossible to miss."

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Papa's Knoll emerges from a single block in the estate. It is the richest and most voluptuous of these wines, but it balances that fruit intensity with tons of energy. Ripe red cherry, blood orange, cinnamon, mint and star anise give the 2018 its decidedly exotic personality. Ripe and expressive, with soft tannins, the 2018 is an absolute joy to taste."

    Item #: i_210410
    Bottle Size: 750ML
    Wine Advocate: 93+
ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93+ POINTS - "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec. It was harvested from September 18 to October 30, and the alcohol weighed in at 14.5%. Deep garnet-purple in color, exuberant notes of warm plums, ripe black and red currants and black cherries come bounding out of the glass with suggestions of cedar chest, unsmoked cigars and beef drippings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is simply singing with juicy black fruits and velvety tannins, finishing long with some baking spice hints coming through. Open for business now, this wine can easily be cellared for 20 years or more."

  4. CHATEAU MONTELENA 2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY 750mL

    Item #: i_243880
    Bottle Size: 750ML
Winery's Notes: "At its core, wine embodies the very best of optimism. Even amidst challenging times, the fundamental belief in a better future pervades the thoughts and actions of everyone involved from kicking bare dirt to pulling the cork. It drives the development of new vineyards, spurring years of sweat and investment before yielding a single berry. It sparks the imagination of winemakers, painting the picture of possibility, justifying vigilance and detail-driven focus. Moreover, it promises a reward for patience and hope. We're regularly amazed by the stories of special bottles of Montelena, stashed away for years, destined for a single day and are incredibly happy to be part of that moment in time. It's in that same vein of optimism, in looking forward, that we continue to hone our craft, improve our corner of the planet, support our community, and bring joy through each bottle we share."

Dark garnet, nearly violet in the glass, the aromatic intensity of this wine is irresistible. Fresh berries and dried cherries comingle with bergamot, lavender, mint, gunpowder, and sage without a single element dominating another. On the palate, the wine is fresh and dynamic, with cranberry, cola, and raspberry jam. The acidity is laser focused, the spine pulling the layers of flavor into harmony with the wine’s supple, yet dense, structure. The tannins here serve to elevate not overwhelm the kinetic balance of texture, ripeness, and vineyard character.

  6. CONTINUUM 2018 PROPRIETARY RED ESTATE NAPA VALLEY 750mL

    Item #: i_212630
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 98-100
Continuum is estate grown on their Sage Mountain Vineyard. It's location, high on Pritchard Hill along the eastern ridge above Oakville, overlooks Napa Valley and the San Francisco Bay. 38 acres of mature estate vineyard, planted in 1991 and 1996, with additional plantings in 2004 and 2010, together comprise 38 distinct vineyard blocks. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot are grown from 1300 to 1600 feet in elevation, on western and southern facing aspects with slight northern and eastern slopes in places. This diversity of plantings on our volcanic soils are the essence of the complexity of Continuum.

The 2018 growing season was a winemaker's dream - cool weather patterns followed much needed rain, but plenty of sunshine allowed the fruit to ripen beautifully. 2018 Continuum expresses purity and precision, with high tone aromatics of red and blue fruit, deep plum and rose oil. This vintage shows an approachable nerve of the land in the refined mineral quality and earthy, savory profile. A shimmering, silky and harmoniously integrated wine with densely packed fine grain tannins.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 98-100 POINTS - "Composed of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple 2018 Proprietary Red has a fantastically fragrant nose of candied violets, red roses, Morello cherries and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of wild blueberries, red currant jelly, iron ore and forest floor, plus a waft of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely packed with tightly wound black and red berry layers, framed by firm, ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with incredibly persistent and evocative floral and mineral layers. An absolute head-turner, this 2018 is all that and then some. Tim Mondavi mentioned that this is due to be bottled in just a few weeks—mid-August—meaning this barrel sample I tasted is pretty close to being a finished wine. With the estate vineyard turning 10 year's old in 2018, here's where we see how incredibly special this singular Pritchard Hill site really is."

  9. FAUST 2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY 750mL

    Item #: i_219670
    Bottle Size: 750ML
    James Suckling: 94
When the 2018 rendition of this wine landed, we just had to crack open a bottle, and once we did, we knew immediately that this would be featured on our top wine list! Faust is owned by the Huneeus family, who also owns Quintessa, Flowers, and Leviathan. Faust was originally designed to be the second label for Quintessa’s Rutherford property, but the Huneeus family eventually found exquisite property in the Coombsville area east of Napa proper, and now it is that vineyard in Coombsville that makes up the majority of the wine.

Both the newest in Napa Valley and the furthest south, Coombsville benefits from ancient volcanic soils, marine breezes coming off the nearby San Pablo Bay, as well as a long and cool growing season due to its location in the valley. Besides being the latest-to-ripen vines in Napa, the soil profiles are very different given it’s closer to the Vaca Mountain range, so there is a lot of eroded volcanic soil, which means, lots of minerals in the soil. In Coombsville, you get more intense color, a blue-black fruit profile, a brighter acidity and minerality in the wines, and the wines are VERY unique.

Earning 94 points from James Suckling, this shows the high quality of the 2018 vintage from Napa. Medium to deep ruby in color, the wine struts its stuff with a bit of aeration to display aromas of toasted oak, cinnamon, dark chocolate, blackcurrants, and plums. On the palate, the firm tannins give way to the intense, rich fruit, driven by flavors of cassis, black cherries, blueberry, wild blackberry, and a hint of pencil shavings. Full-bodied, and with a finish that lasts for half a minute, this may be the best rendition of Faust we have ever encountered!

JAMES SUCKLING 94 POINTS - "Very attractive aromas of blackcurrants, black olives and dark leather with some cedar. It's full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a refined, polished finish. Shows finesse and focus. Grows on the palate. Really delicious now, but will improve with age. Drink or hold."

Lail's Blueprint wines are made as a modern interpretation of the most classical Bordeaux varieties, attempting and succeeding in capturing the ever-shining sunlight of the Napa Valley to transform it into robustly flavorful wines that drink beautifully upon release. The term 'crowd pleaser' comes to mind! "Blueprint" is named after Jon Lail's highly regarded architectural design achievements. The Cabernet Sauvignon is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with additions of Merlot and Petit Verdot. The grapes hail from properties all throughout the Napa Valley AVA. The wine is aged for roughly 18 months in French oak, of which 55% is new.

JEB DUNNUCK 94 POINTS - "As with the whites, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint is a larger production release that sports a dense purple color as well as classic Cabernet notes of blue and black fruits, green tobacco, graphite, and spring flowers. With a more fruit-forward style, it's still rich, medium to full-bodied, has classy tannins, and is a seriously good bottle of wine."

ANTONIO GALLONI 93 POINTS - "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint is fabulous. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, spice, lavender and menthol fill out the layers beautifully. In the glass, the 2018 is rich and generous, yet it also possesses terrific freshness and plenty of verve. It is a superb wine in its price range, or any price range, for that matter."

In the wine world, there are a small number of winemakers that garner just a little extra attention from us buyers. That's because these select few winemakers are known for perennially producing some of the best wines from a given region...Andy Ericson is one of those winemakers! Andy started his winemaking career at Harlan, then Staglin, and has been the winemaker at Screaming Eagle, Ovid, Dancing Hares, and others!

With years of winemaking and vineyard-walking under his belt, Andy was often given the "inside scoop" on vineyards that make extraordinary wine, but were "under the radar" by most winemakers. Taking this information, Andy created Leviathan in 2004. The goal was simple: to create one, unique red wine, drawn from some of the best vineyards in Northern California. The resulting bottling, was born of a passion for blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, to create a full-bodied wine with a character all of its own. Since then, he has remained true to the goal of producing a rich, distinctly Californian red blend, year after year.

Receiving high praise and scores isn't new to this wine, as this is the fourth year in a row this wine has received 94 points. The consistency is there, and the wine is here at Hi-Time for you!

JEB DUNNUCK 94 POINTS - "Always a great value, the 2018 California Red Wine is a Bordeaux blend put together by Andy Erickson. The wine reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as complex notes of red and black fruits, green tobacco, cedary spice, and spring flowers. These all flow to a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine that offers good overall concentration, seamless tannins, and a great finish. Very much in the style of the 2018 vintage with its more streamlined, elegant style, it's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age (although it's far from unapproachable today) and keep for a solid 10-12 years or more. This is one of the more age-worthy examples of this cuvee that I recall."

That's right; a couple of the latest releases from Lewis Cellars has landed, and they have already received massive scores! Former open-wheel driver Randy Lewis is driven to achieve perfection; that's why the Lewis family is hands-on in every aspect, from vineyard management, to winemaking, to sales. Their strong dedication to producing only the best wine they can make has helped them to garner acclaim and big scores from the best critics. Their wines have made the Top Wine list from Wine Spectator more than once, with their 2013 Napa Cabernet being named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year! This year doesn't seem to be much different, as the high scores keep coming in, and these releases have both just earned 95 points from esteemed critic Jeb Dunnuck!

The Mason's Cab (named after one of Randy's grandsons) started out as selected barrels from mountain vineyards that didn't quite fit any of their other Cabs. However, these barrels contained stellar wine, so they blended them and crafted a new wine! Still aged in French oak like its "bigger brothers", Mason's has since taken on its own identity, and judging by the high demand of the Mason's bottling here in our store, we'd say Randy and his team are doing things right!

JEB DUNNUCK 95 POINTS - "More cassis and blue fruits emerge from the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mason's, a more focused, backward wine offering full-bodied richness, a solid spine of acidity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. JEB DUNNUCK 98 POINTS - "Looking at the two 2018s, the 2018 Amoenus comes from the Blossom Creek Vineyard outside of Calistoga and was brought up in new French oak. Both 2018s are concentrated, powerful wines. The Amoenus possesses a beautiful sense of freshness and purity, yet backs that up with a huge, opulent profile that carries incredible black and blue fruits. Showing more chocolate, tobacco, graphite, and foresty, earthy notes with air, this full-bodied beauty has ample ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly shows the more brooding, backward, powerful style of the vintage and is built for the long haul. Hide bottle for 5-7 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 40 years or so."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 97 POINTS - "The 2018 Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
