  1. ALMA ROSA 2016 PINOT NOIR SANTA RITA HILLS 750mL

    Item #: i_275877
    Bottle Size: 750ml
Alma Rosa can be translated from Spanish to English to literally mean the "Soul of the Rose." Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards was founded in 2005 by Sta. Rita Hills pioneer winegrowers Thekla and Richard Sanford.

Bright nose, with dusty raspberry, sage and thyme, laced with butterscotch and light-toast coffee bean cues from the French oak barrels. Flavors of ripe raspberry, red cherry and baking spices are lifted by the fresh acid backbone. On the palate, it is focused and medium-bodied, with fine grip from the seed tannin

    Item #: i_202960
    Bottle Size: 750ml
Winemaker's Notes: "As in years past, this 2017 bottling is very dark and rich by Pinot Noir standards. But in this vintage, it's the complexity that is absolutely uncanny. In the nose, there is almost an extreme presentation of earth with gobs of spice. It's to the point where if I had to pin a single concept on it, it would be SPECTACLE. There is a sweetness in the nose that is like a baked, almost smoky mocha. I have never smelled anything quite like it. The fruit is identifiably cherries on the nose and palate, but it is enveloped by the beautiful French oak that was hand made for me by my buddy, Jerome Fouailly, in Burgundy. In the finish, there is a density of fruit and fineness of tannin that I find in very few Pinots. For a full presentation of how good this vineyard is, let the wine rest in the bottle for a few years or more. If, before then, your corkscrew calls, it is a rich wine, so you will definitely enjoy it. I recommend at least putting it in a nice big glass so it gets some air and a chance to wake up just a bit. Over the next couple years, decanting it would not be a bad idea."

    Item #: i_215560
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points
JEB DUNNUCK 94+ POINTS - "The 2016 Pinot Noir Sanford and Benedict Vineyard is a brilliant wine that ranks with the creme de la creme of the vintage. Coming from one of the top sites in the Sta. Rita Hills, 70% destemmed, and aged 18 months in 30% new French oak, it has a vivid purple/plum color as well as captivating notes of black cherries, blackberries, ground herbs, forest floor, and scorched earth. With medium-bodied richness, a tight, vibrant, racy texture, and present tannins, it's another wine from this great estate that's going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and it will see its 15th birthday in fine form. It's the real deal."

ANTONIO GALLONI 93 POINTS - "An explosion of red and purplish berry fruit makes for a strong opening in the 2016 Pinot Noir Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. Exuberant, racy and full of flavor, the 2016 offers notable intensity while retaining the mid-weight style that is so typical of the year. This is classic S-and-B Pinot. "

  5. DOMAINE DE LA COTE 2017 PINOT NOIR "LA COTE" STA. RITA HILLS 750mL

    Item #: i_215990
    Bottle Size: 750ml
ANTONIO GALLONI 96+ POINTS - "In less than a decade, Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr have created a world class estate. The 2017s are superb, while the 2018s are shaping up to be truly epic. One of the recent developments here has been a reduction of time in barrel from about 20 months to 13 or so, plus a few months in steel, which really seems to help the purity of the fruit come through beautifully."

"The 2017 Pinot Noir La Cote is brisk, intensely saline and full of character. Here, the feeling is more of a linear wine built on energy and persistence more than volume. Bright red cherry, red plum, mint, blood orange and star anise add striking inner perfume and nuance. The is another wine that needs time to be at its best, but it is stunning, even in the early going."

  6. DRAGONETTE 2016 PINOT NOIR SANTA RITA HILLS 750mL

    Item #: i_215930
    Bottle Size: 750ml
On the nose, the wine is beautifully aromatic, combining notes of ripe, fresh cherry, rasberry, and strawberry jam, along with intense floral notes of hibiscus and orange blossom, baking spices of cardamom, cacao and vanilla, and a touch of fresh herbs (bay leaf, celery leaf). On the palate the wine is medium bodied and silky, with waves of complex ripe red fruits (cherry, raspberry, cranberry) complicated by notes of rhurbarb, fresh herbs and hints of wood smoke. The wine has ample, bright acidity, and sturdy tannins which provide structure, energy and cut on the long smooth finish.

ANTONIO GALLONI 93 POINTS - "The 2016 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills) is a gorgeous appellation-level wine from Dragonette. Rose petal, lavender, mint, spice and sweet red/purplish berry fruit are all finely knit. More than anything else, the Sta. Rita Hills is a wine of pure and total finesse. I especially like the wine's translucence and energy. Vineyard sources are Bentrock, Radian, La Encantada, Cargasacchi, Spear, Fiddlestix, and John Sebastiano. The 2016 punches well above its weight. Don't miss it."

    Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points
JEB DUNNUCK 94 POINTS - "I loved the 2017 Pinot Noir Ashley's, a wonderfully complex, balanced, nuanced effort that offers loads of character. Coming from a vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and aged 16 months in 63% new French oak, it offers classic notes of black raspberries, currants, ground herbs, forest floor, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, with plenty of ripe tannins, it's a layered, complex Pinot Noir to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years."

ANTONIO GALLONI 93 POINTS - "Dark cherry, plum, cola, mint and cloves all run through the 2017 Pinot Noir Ashley's. Plum and juicy, with tons of voluptuous richness, the Ashley's is a classic expression of the richer side of the Sta. Rita Hills. Soft curves and silky tannins add to the wine's overt, sumptuous feel. The 2017 was done with 25% whole clusters, but they are pretty much buried by the sheer richness of the fruit."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "Pale ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Ashley's Vineyard opens with notes of granite, pipe tobacco and blueberry with cracked peppercorn, dried leaves, tree bark and bergamot—very savory and earthy but lovely! Light to medium-bodied, it has grainy tannins to support the earthy fruit layers plus juicy acidity and a long, nuanced finish."

ANTONIO GALLONI 94 POINTS - "A new wine in this range, the 2016 Pinot Noir Truly Rita is gorgeous. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the 2016 offers terrific drive in a mid-weight, energetic style that holds considerable appeal. Red and purplish berry fruit, rose petal, lavender and mint are all beautifully focused. A touch of whole clusters adds lift without being especially evident."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Aged 17 months in 26% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, the medium ruby-purple colored 2016 Pinot Noir Truly Rita comes sashaying out of the glass with seriously spicy notions of cinnamon stick, cloves, anise and black pepper with a core of red currant jelly, kirsch and raspberry preserves plus a waft of wild thyme. JEB DUNNUCK 91-93 POINTS - "The appellation 2018 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills comes from the Kessler-Haak and Rancho La Vina vineyards and, as with everything here, will spend 10 months in 1-to 5-year-old barrels. Complex notes of black cherries, spice, candied violets, and potpourri all give way to a medium-bodied effort that has subtle tannins, no hard edges, and notable purity of fruit. It's going to be a terrific value."

  11. MELVILLE 2014 PINOT NOIR "BLOCK M" SANTA RITA HILLS 750mL

    Item #: i_241270
    Bottle Size: 750ml
Block M is a wind swept mesa on Melville's western parcel adjacent to our Terraces block. Sitting atop a sun exposed mesa with several feet of botella clay soil, the extremity of Block M is enhanced by the gravitational pull on three exposed sides forcing the roots to search deeper for sustenance. Block M is made up of equal amounts of clones 114 and 115. The lesser known 114 is lush, velvety and textural with an elegantly pliant internal core, while clone 115 delivers fruit at a higher pitch coupled with a more structurally pronounced personality. The marriage of these complementary components is what renders Melville's Block M bottling so complete. 20% of the fruit was gently destemmed with 80% remaining as whole clusters.

Boasting a dark crimson hue, the Block M bottling is always layered with richness. Vivid aromatics of rosemary, cinnamon stick and star lily are intertwined with the warmth of ripe persimmon, mulberry and cherry pie filling. Texturally, the wine is crisp and fresh on the palate, with an intense tannin profile that finishes with gorgeous purity and length.

  12. MELVILLE 2016 PINOT NOIR ESTATE SANTA RITA HILLS 750mL

    Item #: i_241360
    Bottle Size: 750ML
In the wind-swept, rolling hills of western Santa Barbara County, you will find one of the best cool-climate growing regions on earth. And in this area, you will find one of the more consistent Pinot Noir producers in California!

Ron Melville and his family have been farming high quality grapes for over 30 years. After finding success in Sonoma County, Ron's desire to grow cold-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah brought Melville Vineyards to the Sta. Rita Hills. The Sta. Rita Hills AVA is unique, as it is one of the few grape growing regions in California whose valley runs west to east. In doing so, the cooling air from the Pacific Ocean is able to rush through the area, keeping the daily temperatures low, and providing a long growing season that maximizes flavors. The soils at Melville are a mix of sand and clay, giving Pinot Noir beautiful aromatics combined with ripe, but not overpowering fruit. In addition, Melville plants their vines at a denser spacing than most. In doing so, root systems must compete with each other, inhibiting rigorous growth, naturally lowering yields and furthering the development of flavor and concentration. Farming at Melville is sustainable at a minimum, but often done organically.

Melville's "Estate" Pinot Noir is a collection of 16 different Pinot Noir clones fermented in small 1.5 ton open-top fermenters. Yields were just 1.5 tons per acre! This is the type of small yields that you typically see for Pinot Noirs selling for $75-$100+...but Melville's wine sells for way less than that! Combine that with the stellar 95 point score from critic Antonio Galloni, and you'll see why this has been one of our favorite wines to sell for the past several years! This is the first vintage "from grape to glass" that Chad Melville has produced since taking over from Greg Brewer, and if this is any indication, the Melville wines are destined for continued greatness!

ANTONIO GALLONI 95 POINTS - "The 2016 Pinot Noir Estate is a blend of the seventeen clones on the property. Freshly cut flowers, spice, mint, blood orange and dried flowers give the Estate beguiling aromatic complexity and nuance. There is a sense of translucent beauty in the 2016 that is fabulous, while the 40% whole clusters are very nicely integrated. This is such a tremendous wine."

  13. MELVILLE 2017 PINOT NOIR "ANNA'S" STA. RITA HILLS 750mL

    Item #: i_241240
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Jeb Dunnuck: 93 Points
ANTONIO GALLONI 95 POINTS - "The 2017 Pinot Noir Anna's, from one of the loamier sites on the property, naturally shows more richness and broader shoulders, along with a profile of purplish/blue fruit. Sage, lavender, mint and sweet tobacco all develop in the glass. Firm tannins need time to soften, but there is a lot to look forward to in this virile, potent Pinot from Melville."

JEB DUNNUCK 93+ POINTS - "Coming from clones 667 and 114, the 2017 Pinot Noir Anna's was also brought up all in neutral oak. It offers slightly more classic fruit-driven notes of black cherries, wood smoke, cedar, and floral notes. Clean, balanced, straight, and lively on the palate, it's very much in the style of this focused, classic vintage. It will benefit from 1-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade."

    Wine Advocate: 94
    Jeb Dunnuck: 95 Points
JEB DUNNUCK 95 POINTS - "I continue to be blown away by the wines of Paul Lato, and these are unquestionably some of the most profound and exciting wines coming from the Central Coast today."

"As with all Lato's Pinot Noirs, the 2017 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard was completely destemmed, and this cuvee was brought up in 60% new French oak, which is on the higher end for Lato. This rich, medium to full-bodied, Burgundian styled effort is another wine that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring yet offers a brilliant bouquet of black raspberries, ground herbs, earth, and underbrush notes, with just a hint of classic Sta. Rita Hills salinity and minerality. Showing more floral nuances with time in the glass, give bottles 2-3 years in the cellar and it will shine through 2032."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "The 2017 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard comes from 17-year-old vines planted in diatomaceous earth and sandy loam, and the wine aged for 17 months in 60% new French oak. It's medium ruby-purple in the glass and gives up wonderfully pure aromas of blueberries, spiced cranberry sauce, rhubarb, red cherry, raspberry and strawberry preserves, black cherries, peppered charcuterie, woodsmoke, dried rose petal and orange peel. Light to medium-bodied, it explodes in the mouth with flavor layers supported by firm, finely grained tannins and juicy freshness and finishes long, spicy and energetic. A powerful but elegant expression. 300 cases were made."

Peake Ranch is a boutique winery owned by John & Gillian Wagner. Like all of us who have visited Santa Barbara County, the couple fell in love with the beautiful country side and the friendliness of the people.. They purchased Peake Ranch with a vision of building a winery and a house on the property. Years later they are in their third vintage garnering rave reviews from the top critics. Paul Lato leads the team as winemaker and with nearly two decades of experience, has earned critical acclaim with top critics along with placements of his own wines in top restaurants in the United States, Europe and Japan!

JEB DUNNUCK 93 POINTS - "There are three Pinot Noirs from Peake Ranch, all brilliant wines. Black cherries, black raspberries, smoked herbs, and hints of licorice define the bouquet of the 2016 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills, which is the entry level Pinot Noir of this estate. It's a rich, concentrated, powerful Pinot Noir that has moderate tannins, good acidity, and beautiful upfront charm. Aged 18 months in 62% new French oak, drink it any time over the coming 6-7 years."

Winery Notes - A compelling example of what can be achieved with Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills, this wine captures the natural balance and complexity of this special appellation. The aromas blend bright cherries and blueberries with a subtle and distinguished earthiness expressed as dried oregano, white pepper and black tea. An engaging, seductive texture is supported with a backbone of French oak and finely- grained tannins.

  16. RACINES 2017 PINOT NOIR "LA RINCONADA" SANTA RITA HILLS 750mL

    Item #: i_252660
    Bottle Size: 750ml

Racines is a collaboration of four great voices of wine. Justin Willett of Lieu Dit and Tyler has been joined in his home appellation, the Sta. Rita Hills, by Etienne de Montille and Brian Sieve of Domaine de Montille, and Rodolphe Peters of Pierre Peters. Together, they are marrying the time-honored techniques of Burgundy and Champagne with the pioneering energy of California-and, in the process, they are rediscovering the nuances of the appellation's most iconic vineyards.

Following the consolidation of Domaine de Montille, a family estate that dates back to the 1730s, Etienne de Montille looked to California, eager for an opportunity to engage new terroir with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as his lens. In 2016 he set off on a month of travel among the state's myriad appellations, meeting their winemakers, tasting their wines. In short order it became apparent that the promise he was seeking lay in the Sta. Rita Hills-and the partner for such ambition was already there.

By 2016 Justin Willett, a son of Santa Barbara and career winemaker, had over a decade of experience coaxing forth the character of the region's best vineyards. Etienne and Justin turned to compelling vineyard blocks that Justin had long coveted, and together they have presented refreshing new entries in the most important discussions of the appellation. And then, of course, there's Rodolphe Peters. In 2018, Rodolphe joined Racines in deepening their understanding of Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay. Their first sparkling wines, now en tirage, are likely to debut in late autumn.

The wines here possess more structure and resonance than encountered in Tyler's ethereal approach. New cooperage and custom vats, tailored to Etienne's technique, have been imported. The Pinots are composed using further stem inclusion, more extraction, and longer vatting. The Chardonnays are raised with more finessing of the fine lees and longer elevage. The results are immediately apparent in the glass: these are tensile and crystalline expressions of the Sta. Rita Hills- at once familiar and rendered anew.

ANTONIO GALLONI 93 POINTS - "The 2017 Pinot Noir La Rinconada is powerful and explosive in the glass, with tremendous structural intensity driving a deep expression of site. Lavender, sage, mint, savory herbs and rich blue-toned fruit give the 2017 a distinctly virile, somber personality. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2017 is going to need time to be at its best."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2017 Pinot Noir La Rinconada is medium ruby-purple with strawberry preserves, lilac, sagebrush, bergamot and herbs with warm red cherries, raspberry jam and blackberries scents. It's medium-bodied with perfumed fruits, grainy tannins and juicy freshness, finishing long and with a savory tinge. Bottled a week before I tasted it, it's showing well."

My impression is that the 2017 is still recovering from its relatively recent bottling. We will see."
