This may be the best Podere we've tasted from Umani Ronchi-- and they've been making this particular wine since 1993 so that's saying something! Umani Ronchi is driven by a strong sense of ethics and respect for the environment, lavishing attention on the territory and biodiversity, with each choice reflecting a sustainable way of thinking and acting. All the vineyards, from the Verdicchio to the Montepulciano, are farmed organically. Even more than an ideological conviction, organic farming is a practical, technical choice for Umani Ronchi. Organic farming requires balance in nature and a range of crops, trees, and herbs that creates a biodiverse environment.

This story began with Gino Umani Ronchi in Cupramontana, the heart of Verdicchio Classico, more than half a century ago. Today the Umani Ronchi wine estate is owned by the Bianchi-Bernetti family, who since 1959 have been making superb quality craft wines, coaxing the best out of Verdicchio and Montepulciano, two varietals that find their finest expression in Marche and Abruzzo.

We have featured Montepulcianos from Abruzzo as our wine of the month before, and most likely will do so again...if they are as good as Podere and offer great bang-for-the-buck value (hallmarks for our WOM program!).

The nose offers bright forward fruit (plum, mixed berries) with layers of earthy, peppery spice and a touch of briar wood. The ripe fruit continues onto the palate, reiterating the scents with flavors of plum and berries and spice. The moderate tannins and forward acidity, balanced out by the fruit, make this a refreshing, brisk, bright and beautiful red wine that's big enough for your favorite meats and savory dishes (game, hearty pastas, wild boar sausage, burgers, pizza).
