Wow, what a nice white wine this dry Irsai Oliver from Szoke is! It has a beautiful fragrance on the nose and perfectly refreshing apricot and peach flavors on the palate followed by a clean, dry finish. No wonder the wine is aromatic; the parents of this native Hungarian grape are Gewurztraminer and Muscat Ottonel. Both varietals contribute their particular characteristics to this hybrid grape which is quickly becoming one of Hungary's most popular white wine varietals. The Szoke winery is located in the Matra region of Hungary, about an hour and a half north east of Budapest. The vineyards, at the base of the Matra mountains, are planted on volcanic soils. The wines are macerated and aged in stainless steel. Serve this delightful white with prosciutto and melon, fish and chicken dishes or with mild curries.
