We sell a LOT of red Burgundy and really enjoy the compelling balance, complexity and delicious drinkability of wine from the most famous Pinot Noir region in the world.

In addition, we are huge fans of the wines made by Sylvain Pataille and a visit to his Domaine in 2019 was no less than an epiphany. His care and attention to detail in his farming and the resulting purity of fruit, silky smooth tannins and persistence made us sit up and take notice. These wines are immediately expressive with aromas that leap from the glass, in a suave and elegant package.

We just received the stunning 2019 Marsannay, which is certainly his best village level red yet. We are not alone in this assessment. Decanter magazine reviewed this wine and gave it an amazing score of 96 Points! The review notes the "impressive concentration with pronounced aromas" and "velvety texture" and "superb, balanced persistence on the finish."

Sylvain Pataille is one of the new breed of winemakers and is also a highly-regarded oenologist, who consults for more than a dozen domaines in Burgundy. Pataille has quickly built up a domaine of 15 hectares in Marsannay, the northernmost appelation of the Côte de Nuits. In doing so, this once under the radar appellation has been elevated and is recognized as producing delicious, high-quality wine.

The "secret" to Pataille's success is really his farming. Domaine Pataille is farmed organically and many vineyards are now completely biodynamic. Accordingly, there are no chemical herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers and only natural yeasts are used in fermentation. Couple this attention to detail with a bevy of old vine parcels using ancient clonal selection and you have the underlying material to make great wine. In addition, Pataille was able to take advantage of the 2019 vintage, which is being hailed as outstanding, showing nicely ripened fruit with excellent freshness.

Pataille's wines show great balance and exhibit exceptional harmony and grace. The whole cluster fermentation provides additional complexity, adding floral and spice nuances. The clay-limestone geology that is shared by all the great Burgundy vineyards is obviously present here.

We are thrilled to be able to share these wines with a broader audience as the legend of Pataille continues to grow.

This wine is flat out gorgeous with impressive depth and concentration showcasing red and black cherry as well as blackberry with earth, forest floor, light florals and a touch of spice.

This is a delicious Burgundy available at an incredible price. The quality to price ratio is impressive. As with most Burgundy, supply is quite limited. When it's gone it's gone!

DECANTER 96 POINTS - "Blended from the 90-year-old vines in the Clos du Roy with other old vines. The grapes are entirely fermented as whole clusters, with a gentle extraction and 24 months ageing in cask, half new. The result is a wine of impressive concentration, with pronounced aromas of ripe plum and cassis, a floral edge, plus a distinct minerality. The texture is velvety and dense, with an abundance of fine-grained tannins and a superb, balanced persistence on the finish."

    Sylvain Patille 2019 Marsannay

For the price point it's a definite 5! Extremely well balanced, showing the characteristics of a good red Burgundy. Refined, yet enough body to stand up to a pork roast or an Epoisses.
