The "Tre di Tre" ("three of three" referring to three vines, three cousins, three generations at the winery) is obtained from a blend of Negroamaro, Aglianico and Primitivo, whose carefully selected and treated grapes come from terroirs located in the Salento area that are particularly suited for wine. Think of lounging down near the 'heel of the boot' of Italy and you'll be close to where the grapes and wine comes from.
As in all real estate, it's all about "location, location, location!" Puglia is temperate, mitigated by the sea, while the chain of the Alps protects it from the northern winds. Winters are cold and wet, summers are hot and sultry with medium temperature excursions; in other words, excellent conditions to grow grapes that will make fantastic wines. Adequate water in the off-months, an abundance of sunshine and temperature variance in the growing season (hot days and cool nights are a bonus), plenty of chances for the vines to have to dig deep for the best micronutrients, to work a little, which makes for more intense flavors and a better wine overall.
And the proof is in the pudding. Well, wine glass. This one's a keeper! The nose is filled with both fruit and more savory elements. Ripe plum, mixed red berries and fruit leather lead to a hint of peppercorn and wood spice. The palate continues with the ripe fruits and plum again comes to the fore as notes of cherry compote, licorice, light brown spices and citrus make for a delicious, balanced red wine. The medium tannins and ample acidity keep the wine grounded and fresh while the 14% abv won't weigh one down in the August sunshine. After a day being opened, the wine was even better-- the ripe fruit was clearly the star of the show but the balance is breathtaking-- this wine is the complete package and will certainly make us feel like we're relaxing on the southern Italian coast with a glass of red sunshine to keep us content. We love finding great wines to feature every month that offer way more quality than the price suggests. Buy, drink, enjoy!
