WINE ADVOCATE 95+ POINTSThe 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese is pure, clear and flinty on the concentrated nose that is reminiscent of a fresh fruit salad served on a slate plate on an early summer morning. Light, lush and highly finessed but seriously structured on the palate, this is a savory, very clear and elegant Sonnenuhr Spatlese with great precision and finesse and highly stimulating salinity and mouth-watering grip on the finish. The acidity is crystalline and very delicate, making this another great Mosel Spätlese from the 2020 vintage. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 37 21 in July 2022. Prum's 2020s are without exception narrative Rieslings, shaped by their respective origins, which to taste always means pleasure and even relaxation but never real work. It will certainly not be easy for the 2021s to outdo the partly grandiose 2020s once these show fascinating clarity, finesse and elegance. Even Dr. Manfred Prum, probably not a man of praise, had to admit at the end, "That was a highly enjoyable wine tasting; that's how I like it!" He wanted to explicitly praise his daughter Katharina for the 2020 vintage, but at the subsequent lunch he preferred to devote himself and us to two wines from the archive. Thank goodness Prüm wines speak for themselves anyway, so who needs praise?
JOHN GILMAN - VIEW FROM THE CELLAR 96+ POINTS - "The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese from Katarina Prum is the finest of the four stunning Spatlesen I tasted for this report. The bouquet is gorgeous and the absolute epitome of this great terroir, soaring from the glass in a blaze of pear, apple, vanilla bean, a touch of white cherry, wild yeasts, a very complex base of slate and a beautiful array of floral tones in the upper register that include apple blossoms, violets and iris blossoms. On the palate the wine is fullish, precise and tightly-knit, with a beautiful girdle of acidity, lovely filigree and grip, laser-like focus and a very, very long, nascently complex and perfectly balanced finish. It will be a crime to open a bottle of this stunning Spatlese until it is at least ten years of age, but also perfectly understandable! 2030-2080."
MOSEL FINE WINES - 93 POINTS - "The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese offers a superbly spicy, herbal, and refreshing nose of rosemary, vineyard peach, almond cream, white flowers, mint, and cassis. The wine is superbly well-balanced on the palate, where delicious creamy and fruity flavors of almond, vineyard peach, and tangerine make for a pure and smooth feeling. The finish is very long, nicely structured, and well-delineated. This is a superb Spätlese which only now requires some patience for its elements to integrate. 2030-2050"
