In a vintage whose character is more of finesse than power, the Istine vineyard in the Radda area is even more so. It's high-altitude, north-facing, and based on calcareous clay soils; the result is a medium-light-bodied Sangiovese of lighter color, lean in its fleshiness of fruit but layered with finessed aromas and flavors, along with a fine structure of mineral acidity and light grip of chalky tannins. While delicious now with 30 minutes of air, try this in 2024-2026 as it develops complexity and a silkier texture.
KERIN O'KEEFE 96 POINTS - "The stunning 2020 Istine Vigna Istine is all about fragrance and finesse. It opens with heady scents recalling iris, woodland berry, camphor and spice that segue into flavors of juicy black cherry, wild raspberry, licorice and menthol. Fresh acidity and smooth, polished tannins provide elegant support. Drink 2035. Abv: 13% Kerin O’Keefe October 2023 ©kerinokeefe.com"
ANTONIO GALLONI, VINOUS 94 POINTS - "The 2020 Chianti Classico Vigna Istine is a wine of total understatement and class. The translucent finesse of Radda comes through loud and clear. Crushed rocks, mint, chalk and white pepper add a striking top register of brilliance throughout. The 2020 is flat out gorgeous. "
Aged one year in 2000/3000-Liter Slavonian oak casks.
"In the heart of the historical Chianti region, on the way between Radda and Castellina in Chianti, surrounded and protected by woods, the high vineyard [one of the highest in Chianti at 480-550 meters above sea level] of Istine gives us an astonishing view on the towns of Radda and Panzano in Chianti."
