We were very happy when the Côtes du Rhônes Villages from Guillaume Gonnet, took the crown for May as our Wine of the Month.

We tend to think of Gonnet’s Le Hardi as a 'baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape' with its richness, complexity and overall approachability. This wine just sings!

The Côtes du Rhône region in France is one of our favorite wine appellations-- the reds are drinkable year-round and pair wonderfully with a wide range of foods. The Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation are of higher quality than the regular Côtes du Rhônes.

The scents from the glass reflect red and blue fruits, fields of wildflowers, lavender, raspberry, rose petal and garrique. The palate is soft and silky with rounded tannins. Upon tasting, flavors of red fruits (cherries, red plum and loganberry) are accompanied by a touch of spice, earth and licorice adding depth as the rich, smooth finish reiterates the fruit once again.

Guillaume traveled the world working in some of the most famous wineries in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Napa before joining his family as 3rd generation winemaker.

Guillaume has always been fascinated by the notion of "terroir", most notably about how the Southern Rhône varieties express themselves in diverse terroir.

And Le Hardi is certainly very expressive. With 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, this delicious wine offers so much value for the price. It is the type of wine we always hope to find when singling out one wine to feature. Bang-for-the-buck value and, most importantly, just flat-out great wine.

Enjoy this delicious wine on its own or pair with hard, aged cheeses, a nice ribeye with mushrooms and garlic potatoes, or Italian inspired dishes such as lasagna, or chicken Milanese served with tomato pasta.

As we migrate from Spring to Summer, this will make the change easy and tasty--get the grill out early for this one. Enjoy!
