WINE ADVOCATE - 91+ POINTS The 2019 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett is very clear and aromatic on the flinty, precise yet still reductive nose that indicates a classic Mosel style. Round and lush on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, sweet and fruity Kabinett with almost 50 grams of residual sugar and stimulating mineral acidity and slatey grip. Excellent but not my taste; this is still too dominant in its sweetness. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
Sofia Thanisch and her operating manager, Olaf Kaufmann, have been assisted by 32-years-old Christina Thanisch for a year now. She guided me through the tasting of a series of very good and some great Mosel Rieslings, of which the 2019 Prädikatsweine, from Kabinett up to Beerenauslese, are the most impressive ones. Among the few dry wines, the 2019 Berncasteler Doctor GG is outstanding and a highlight of a collection that includes more sweet than dry wines by far. The barrel-fermented 2019 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Spätlese "Cuvée Christina" is a new entry initiated by the new generation.
