This "Amateur" is 100% Chardonnay blended from six parcels that illustrate all the various aspects of Trépail. Only natural yeasts are used for alcoholic fermentation which takes place in enameled-steel tanks. To stabilize the wines and avoid the use of sulphur, all cuvées undergo malolactic fermentation. The wines remain on their lees until shortly before the next vintage is harvested and are bottled without fining, filtration or cold stabilization. All Champagnes are zero dosage. Due to space limitations the wines are released relatively young; ideally, this Champagne should mature for a few years in the cellar before being enjoyed. For the impatient, we recommend careful decanting, which reveals incisive, crystalline notes of green apple, kiwi and lime enveloped with taut acidity and the chalk soil undertones for which the Trépail cru is noted. A fabulous one-of-a-kind aperitif Champagne and a great introduction to natural world of Léclapart.

The Léclaparts have been vignerons in the Montagne de Reims village of Trépail (two miles north of Ambonnay) for four generations. David Léclapart took over his family's seven and one-half acre (split into 22 parcels) estate in 1998. After just two years of feverous work, he was able to completely convert his patrimony over to fully biodynamic viticulture and earn certification by both Ecocert and Demeter. It wasn't long thereafter until his Champagnes had the attention of Champagne freaks and Michelin-starred restaurants around the globe. In fact, world-renowned Champagne scribe, Richard Juhlin, rates David Léclapart among only a handful of 4 -star producers because of …" the masterpieces he creates in harmony with nature". His strict biodynamic protocols have created vines that seem to burst with energy and health. Not unlike the famed Anselme Selosses, Léclapart really pushes the boundaries of what a Champagne can be. Thus, they are a far cry from the slick fizz produced by many of the Grande Marques. That said, if you have a penchant for distinctive, naturally crafted, terroir-driven Champagnes are just the right ticket.
