Colpetrone hails from Montefalco in Umbria, a historic small hill town with a population of around 5,581 (as of 2017). It has been settled since pre-Roman times, and retains many of its historic buildings.

Thanks to the perfect climate conditions in the Còlpetrone area they can harvest the grapes very late. This allows the grapes to retain a higher amount of polyphenol and sugar that creates a wine that is round and rich to the palate. The label represents a golden hawk. Legend has it that in ancient times the monks of the area found a wounded golden hawk and cured it by using the skin of the local grape-- thereby giving the grape healing powers and a sacred reputation (consequently, the origin of the name of the Sagrantino grape, centered in Montefalco, may have ties to the word sacrestia [communion wine]).

A 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon blend it's an easy-to-drink intro to the heart of Italy. Lovely hedonism! The nose is filled with gorgeous lush red fruits and tropical delights: think strawberries, guava and watermelon. A touch of earth and wild herbs adds a bit of depth. The fruit carries over onto the palate with mixed berries (cherries and strawberries being the main duo) in the lead as grippy tannins and light acidity keep the vino light on its feet. A touch of hillside garrigue and light brown spices add some texture but the fruit's the star here. Bright, bountiful fruit that finishes with a flourish that slowly recedes upon the palate. Easy drinker and so enjoyable-- share this one with those you love! Ready for a bite? Warm up the grill and break out some chops or sausages to pair with this delightful wine.
