The reds of Rioja still offer some of the best values these days. Wine drinkers from all over the world are drawn by the mellow, sun-kissed plum and bright red-berried flavors of these Tempranillo-driven wines, complemented by the cedary or creamy vanilla aromas that come from extended aging in small oak barrels. But the reasonable prices keep us coming back for more!

Bodegas Altanza's 2015 Gran Reserva is a prime example of the classic Rioja style, though the estate was created only in 1998 - recent for a wine region that's been popular since the late 1800s! It has the medium weight and soft mouthfeel; the elegantly-delivered but complex flavor spectrum; and the brightness that enlivens the mouthfeel. After years of aging in oak and bottle, the chalky/crushed rock tannins of Tempranillo have become more caressing, and a complex bouquet with spices, leather and tobacco has started to develop. The exceptional 2015 vintage gave this an extra richness and expressiveness of ripe, sunny fruits that makes this a "wow" wine that's sure to impress!

The Decanter World Wine Awards, which celebrated British critic Steven Spurrier helped launch, is a respected annual competition that brings together wines from around the world to be evaluated by close to 250 wine industry experts. Bodegas Altanza's 2015 Gran Reserva earned a competition score of 96 points! Now's your chance to check it out yourself! If you want to really enjoy yourself, pair it with roasted beef tenderloin or Filet Mignon topped with a savory red wine sauce.

DECANTER 96 POINTS, WORLD WINE AWARD - "Beautiful and deep Gran Reserva. You can really taste classicism here. It has an elegant texture, well-integrated tannins, lots of complexity and notes of roasted fruits, sweet spices, cigar box, dried herbs and sweet oak. Fresh acidity enlivens the vivid, spicy and impressively long finish."
