One of our favorite everyday value reds just got better! With the help of one of the best vintages for Tuscany, Aia Vecchia has given us another reason to love Super Tuscans. This estate has been bringing us incredible value since the 90's with the help of the late legendary winemaker of Ornellaia, Tibor Gal, who assisted them in the start of their own winery. The Pellegrini estates include vineyards in some of the most reputable spots in Bolgheri. The home to some of the most well-known Super Tuscans in the world including the highly regarded, Sassicaia. The one place where Bordeaux varietals take precedence over any native Italian grape.

Lagone has always exceeded the expectation for a wine at this price. And the 2015 vintage is absolutely one of the best illustrations of the true value and quality that Aia Vecchia shows us year after year.

The Pellegrini family have been grape growers for many generations and have sold their grapes to some of the Top Super Tuscan houses for many years. Their property, Casavecchia, is adjacent to the highly regarded Ornellaia and shares many attributes of its more famous neighbor. Somehow, even in this high rent district, Aia Vecchia has brought us an affordable interpretation of this fantastic Mediterranean climate location. This fantastic Super Tuscan is drinking exceptionally well right now!

DECANTER MAGAZINE 93 POINTS - "Silver Award Winner: Lots of ripe strawberry and black fruit on the nose, the palate has lovely super concentrated ripe cassis fruit, with vanilla and spice."

60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged in various types of oak barrels for 12 months; aged six months in bottle. Dry, structured and elegant with flavors of plum, ripe cherries, wild berries and a hint of spice, followed by a lengthy and smooth finish that begs for food.

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - "Round and juicy, this lively red shows ripe flavors of kirsch and mulled plum, with chocolate and licorice accents. Heady but not heavy, with bright acidity and spicy and floral notes on the finish. Drink now through 2022."

Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a winery located in the area covered by the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen (DO, wine quality standard). It was founded in 2002 with the aim of turning it into a world reference for Garnacha wines of the highest quality, prepared from native vine clones.

‘Veraton’ is the third wine we produce from the Garnacha grape, from vines between 30 and 50 years old, and aged in barrels for 16 months. It is a wine with an attractive collection of balsamic notes, of chocolate and black fruits, very warm in the mouth and an extremely pleasant finish.

We first tasted this wine last year when it was brought into the store for us to sample. Hope so, because this wine is really good! We first tasted this wine last year when it was brought into the store for us to sample.wine is really good! We first tasted this wine last year when it was brought into the store for us to sample. We first tasted this wine last year when it was brought into the store for us to sample. Once this Chardonnay from Burgundy touched our lips we were smitten. This became an instant staff favorite and quickly become one of our "go to" wines. It's clean, crisp and dry and features wonderful purity of fruit. This wine is balanced, harmonious and flat-out delicious.

The wine has been unavailable for many months, but we found more and again sampled it. It continues to be fantastic and may have actually improved a bit with more bottle age. It comes from the little known appellation of Vire-Clesse and the up and coming producer, Domaine Andre Bonhomme. The grapes for this wine are hand-picked from the domaine’s small, 5 acre parcel and are fermented and aged in stainless-steel, resulting in a clean, aromatic style.

The Vieilles Vignes (old vines) have an average age of over 80 years, resulting in uncommon depth for a wine at this price point.

We have put Andre Bonhomme's Vire-Clesse on our Napa Technology tasting machine where our customers can "try before you buy." Well, they did try it and the bottles flew out of the store. Vire and Clesse were originally areas appended to the village of Macon. As time went on, it became apparent these vineyards were capable of producing wines of distinction. Upon approval from the governing body, Vire-Clesse gained recognition and became an appellation unto itself.

This is a wine that tastes great on release, but will evolve slowly for several years if you can wait. It is an uncommon value that clearly over-delivers for the price. Enjoy!

Really nice on the nose with notes of gala apple, citrus, pear blossom, tangerine blossom and some tropical fruit notes. On the palate, the wine is clean, crisp and dry with a medium/full body and nice acidity that provides lift. The flavor profile is broad with fresh, perfectly ripened fruit. Gala apples, Bartlett pears, lemon oil, pineapple, melon and a brilliant wet rock minerality are apparent. The acidity brings freshness to this well-balanced effort which has a surprisingly long finish. Enjoy on its own or with a variety of shellfish, seafood or poultry.

#6 ON WHISKY ADVOCATE TOP 20 WHISKIES OF 2017

WHISKEY ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Ardbeg doles out occasional limited releases for their avid fans, but for nearly a decade the core range consisted of just three whiskies: 10 year old, Uigeadail, and Corryvreckan. The addition of An Oa, matured in a combination of virgin oak, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and bourbon barrels, and married in a French oak ‘gathering vat’ prior to bottling, marks a reason to celebrate. An Oa is a more approachable Ardbeg. It lacks some of the typical oiliness, but flavor and complexity abound with hot peat, black tea, and peppery cloves. Die-hard Ardbeg fans should have no complaints, and new converts have a real treat in store." - Gavin Smith

To start, the wineries oldest vineyards were planted back in 1932 to original rootstock Pinot Noir. Bodega Chacra's contiguous vineyards are the oldest ungrafted, original rootstocks of Pinot Noir in the world. The Winery operates entirely under Organic and Biodynamic practices. What makes this unique vineyard so special is the combination of its arid climate, and dessert soil known as the Rio Negro in Argentina. The climate combined with the green practices allow the vineyard to be 100% free of pesticides, and be extremely healthy and vibrant.

The wineries founder, Piero Incisa della Rochetta is no joke either. His Grandfather started Tenuta San Guido on the Tuscan coast in the 1940's, and created Sassicaia. Sassicaia is the only wine in Italy to have its own appellation named after the wine itself. Piero cut his teeth working in the vineyards of Sassicaia, and hanging out with his nearby cousins the Antinori's. He later started up an Umbrian winery project named Salviano that focused on Sangiovese and Bordeaux varietals. After a few years, he got a little restless and drifted to Malibu to get his undergraduate degree at Pepperdine University, and then later on to NYU for his Masters. While at NYU, he started to miss the wine business, so he exiled himself to Burgundy with some friends to help make some great wines and enjoy his passion of Pinot Noir. While in burgundy, his group of friends had a blind tasting of Pinot Noirs. During this tasting, one friend brought something that was completely unknown, and amazing. The wine was from an old vine Pinot Noir vineyard in Argentina, which this person was helping make the wine as a favor. Some weeks later, Piero had to contact this person since it was all he could think about. He ventured out to Argentina, to see this area of old vine Pinot Noir, and happened to find a vineyard that was even older than the one he had tasted in Burgundy. This all took place in 2004, and the rest is history as he bought the winery in 2004, and later other contiguous old vine vineyards.

What makes the wines of Bodegas Chacra so amazing, is a combination of having some of the oldest vines of Pinot Noir in the world, a unique micro climate that allows for wines to be made as pure as possible using no chemicals in any part of the wine making process. (A small exception would be small amounts of sulfur on the bottles to sterilize them.) For the wine geeks that are in love with natural wines, this wine has less than 40ppm of sulfur which qualifies them to be a natural wine. These wines however, are nothing like the vast natural wines out in the marketplace. They are serious wines for any connoisseur as they have a sense of elegance and finesse.

The Barda is a Pinot Noir, which is like a great Burgundy, made by an amazing Italian winery owner, from Argentina's "Garden of Eden". The youngest vines of the Barda come from vineyards that are around 25 years old, in addition to pinot noir juice that comes from vineyards planted in 1955, and 1932. That's right, vines that are 85 years old are in the Barda. These older vineyards produce fewer quantities of fruit naturally, but have more developed and concentrated flavors. The vineyards are certified Organic and Biodynamic, which adds to the purity of flavor to this great Pinot Noir. The vineyards see no pesticides due to the natural barriers the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain ranges create.

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "A fantastic red with ginger, dried strawberry, wet earth and fresh leather aromas and flavors. Full body, silky tannins and a fantastic finish. Superb. Best Barda ever."

Owners John and Michelle (JaM) Truchard have created quite a following in a relatively short amount of time. With the name of their wine label being called JaM, they employed the help of winemaker Rob Lloyd to produce a rich, jammy style of Cabernet. Well, that wine was a huge hit, and since Rob knew a thing or two about making Chardonnays, it only made sense that this white wine should be called "Butter". As the name implies, this is a rich, buttery style of Chardonnay laced with aromas of baked lemons and mandarin oranges mingle with a hint of spice and smoke. The palate begins with crisp pineapple, bright citrus and ripe melon while a soft creaminess rounds out the finish. This Chardonnay is ready for immediate enjoyment and is suited to a wide variety of foods including white fish, smoked salmon and creamy pasta dishes.

Every once in a while, a wine walks through the door (not literally, but you get the idea...) and just blows the room away. This is definitely one of those wines. Our Italian Wine Buyer, Patty Quick, believes this is the best wine she's ever had in terms of quality-to-price ratio. The juice is outstanding, the price reasonable and the critics are effusive in their praise— creating a fortuitous trifecta for those with access to it. This wine won't last so move quickly!

About the Winery - Caparzo, with owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini and winemaker Massimo Bracalente, aims to make top quality products using meticulous and traditional techniques, while at the same time applying a modern outlook in its commercial relations with efficiency and capability. More than thirty years have passed since the first vines were planted and the first steps in winemaking taken. In this period, Caparzo, bolstered by its background in the Brunello tradition and the different terroirs of the area, has proved its ability to produce wines with a creative flair and spirit of innovation that achieves top standards in quality. This explains why Caparzo wines have been chosen by the most famous restaurants in the world and are served at international meetings and official State banquets.

WINE SPECTATOR 95 POINTS - "This cuts more of a broad swath than its peers, yet remains graceful, evoking strawberry, cherry, tobacco and stony mineral flavors. Long and dense in structure, with a tobacco- and underbrush-tinged finish. Best from 2021 through 2033."

JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "The caramel and ripe fruit are impressive with some grilled meat too. Full body, firm and silky. A tight and exciting wine for the future. Drink in 2020."

WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "Caparzo is my go-to producer when I'm looking for classic Brunello with a more accessible and immediate personality to pair with pasta or grilled steak. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is made in traditional botte from Slavonian oak, where it rests for two years. Yet the bouquet is softer and more open than many other wines made in this fashion (that ultimately sees less oxygen during overall winemaking). Bright cherry and cassis is followed by deep layers of smoke, tar and grilled herb. The wine is elegant and graceful for either a medium or a long-term drinking window."

Casanova di Neri has most certainly had its share of accolades and praise with all the estate wines including the Brunello di Montalcino 'White Label', the newest project 'Tenuta Nuova' (literally translated new estate) and the small single vineyard of Cerretalto. Just to name a few, Last years 2012 'White Label' made #4 Top 100 Wine Spectator with 95 Points, the 2010 'Tenuta Nuova' received 100 points in Wine Advocate, and of course not forgetting the first time Giacomo Neri set off fireworks...the 2001 'Tenuta Nuova' making 2006 Wine Spectator Wine of the Year!

But you'd be surprised to hear the man behind all this, Giacomo Neri, is just a soft spoken, local, down-to-earth Montalcino farmer. Our Italian Wine Buyer Patty Quick recently got the opportunity to sit down with Giacomo over lunch and heard the story of how Casanova di Neri became one of the "shining stars of Montalcino". With the fortunate early acquisition of vineyards in North East Montalcino in 1971, Giacomo's father, Giovanni Neri, was one of less than 30 producers in the area. Almost ten years before Brunello di Montalcino obtained the DOCG classification, in 1980.

As Giacomo set out to make a statement of his own, joining the winery in 1986, he was determined to find land that he could further develop their own clone of Sangiovese from the Cerretalto vineyard, through massal selection. He found a humpbacked hill in the South West part of Montalcino with Mediterranean forest and herbal plants typical of local islands. And Giacomo explains what a crazy risk this was....

"My mother loved me very much. I could do no wrong. She loved me more than anything." But, Giacomo admits his mamma told him he could not purchase such a crazy idea. "You are already making great wines that are selling well, both White Label and Cerretalto Brunello. Why are you taking such a big risk?". The family's vineyards were already successful and she was concerned her son was making the biggest mistake. Not letting his mother deter him from what he knew would be the future of the family's estate, he took the risk! From 1993, which is the first vintage of Tenuta Nuova, the challenge was to produce a high-quality wine produced in bigger quantity compared to any other wines at the same level. And with the rise of Brunello di Montalcino over the years, with more than 250 producers currently, it is no longer possible to purchase such land without a huge price tag. Making the risk that Giacomo took, all the more valuable.

"I still remember when Tenuta Nuova 2001 was 'The Best Wine of the Year' for Wine Spectator: as soon as I landed my son Giovanni called me saying 'Babbo, siamo Campioni!' (Dad, we are champion!). From then, I started to hear that Tenuta Nuova is no longer a 'new wine' but part of our tradition." - Giacomo Neri

With the 2013 Classic Vintage that just arrived, we are excited to share with you another great showing of Casanova di Neri Brunello! And with the press of this vintage just ramping up, we suggest you get enough to put a few away! These wines are made to enjoy now and cellar for 25+ years.

WINE ADVOCATE 93+ POINTS - "It's that time of year: get your Neri on. This blockbuster Montalcino estate has released another fantastic collection of new wines, including the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino. Beautifully executed, the wine oozes forth from the glass with round, supple and velvety fruit. This Brunello Annata is luscious and deep, with millefoglie aromatic layering that peels back slowly and carefully. The mouthfeel is less elaborate compared to the estate's top expressions, but the bouquet does much to push this score into the low nineties. Some 80,000 bottles were produced."

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "This is focused, with a vivid structure driving the cherry, leather, spice and earth flavors. Dusty tannins follow up, while this remains fresh on the lingering finish. Best from 2020 through 2033."

And with the press of this vintage just ramping up, we suggest you get enough to put a few away! These wines are made to enjoy now and cellar for 25+ years. This anniversary edition will be one of the best wine purchases you make this year.

WINE ADVOCATE 97 POINTS - "Casanova di Neri's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is celebrating its 20th anniversary (1993-2013), and a special gold-label edition of the wine was made to commemorate this important milestone. I tasted the white label for this review. This is a bold and expressive Brunello that displays tightly knit aromas of Morello cherry, spice, leather and balsam herb that are the building blocks of the most beautiful Brunellos that come to mind. The Casanova di Neri house style implies a modern and sophisticated approach for sure. But the inner spirit and texture of Sangiovese is so fine and polished in its natural state that it hardly matters. The personality of the grape shines through with a loud and confident voice."

WINE SPECTATOR 'HOT WINES' 96 POINTS - "Sweet, ripe strawberry and cherry fruit melds seamlessly with the dense, refined structure of this red. Saline, licorice and spice accents add complexity as this lingers gracefully on the finish. Terrific harmony and expression."

JAMES SUCKLING 98 POINTS - "A vivid and bright red with intense blueberries and raspberries. Floral undertones and tons of citrus, too! Full-bodied, dense and layered. Polished tannins and fantastic fruit. The muscularity of the structure is what gives this wine focus and intensity. So serious for the vintage. Give it time to show its greatness. Drink in 2022."

"The Chaudiere family's Chateau Pesquie continues to be one of the gems in the Ventoux appellation" - Wine Advocate

"Easily one of my favorite estates from the up-and-coming Ventoux region. The wines sell for a song, yet always deliver high-quality, loads of character and impeccably made profiles" - Jeb Dunnuck

"It's a crazy good value" - Wine Advocate

We are definitely living in the best of times when it comes to being able to find amazing wines at great prices. The favorable growing conditions in the Rhone Valley during the great 2015 vintage and winemaking know-how have resulted in a fantastic red blend from Chateau Pesquie. We have featured this wine before and it's always been a hit with our customers who enjoy the generosity of fruit and silky smooth mouthfeel. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rated this wine 92 Points and called it a "smoking good 2015 that readers should snatch up."

This family-owned estate has been farming the land for four generations, but previously sold the grapes to a local grower's cooperative. In 1990, the family began domain bottling the wine themselves to highlight the excellent quality and the results speak for themselves in every glass!

The vineyards are located on the lower slopes of Mount Ventoux at an altitude of approximately 1000 feet. Here the grapes are exposed to abundant sunshine in a slightly cooler micro-climate which allows the grapes to ripen slowly, yet perfectly during the extended growing season. The diurnal swing in temperature ensures excellent color, concentration and freshness. You can actually taste how the grapes have achieved perfect phenolic ripeness while the wine remains fresh.

As the Wine Advocate states, Chateau Pesquie is "polished, silky and with no hard edges." Being able to enjoy this for less than $12.00 per bottle makes this delicious wine a no brainer.

WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "A smoking good 2015 that readers should snatch up is the 2015 Cotes du Ventoux Cuvee des Terrasses, which is 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah that’s aged in a combination of two- to four-year-old barrels and foudres. Medium to full-bodied, polished, silky and with no hard edges, it has classic Southern Rhone notes of Provencal spices, garrigue, licorice and ripe black raspberries. Buy a case and drink bottles over the coming 5-6 years."

"The Chaudiere family’s Chateau Pesquié continues to be one of the gems in the Ventoux appellation. Their Ventoux Cuvee des Terrasses is made in decent quantities and is the easiest to find (and it’s a crazy good value), but don’t miss a chance to taste their other cuvées."

We've been fortunate lately to discover a fresh crop of striking and beautiful wines from Portugal. The appeal is immediate. When we tasted the Chocapalha line-up last month alongside the rest of winemaker Sandra Tavares's ventures we decided our "Wine of the Month 2" on the spot—and added white "Arinto" bottling as a companion, almost a "Wine of the Month 2.5." The wines are layered, aromatic, with balanced alcohols and enlivening acidity, but also show a depth of fruit that is immediately appealing. You probably won't recognize many of the grape varieties in these wines, but the discovery here is half the fun and the prices are amazing for the quality.

This ancient estate is nestled in the sun-drenched hills near Alenquer, just northwest of Lisbon. The Tavares da Silva family has nurtured the vineyards over the years, and today their youngest daughter, Sandra, is making some of the most exciting wines in Portugal. Sandra has built a name for herself as a modern and mindful winemaker in the Duoro Region.

Traditional Portuguese Red wines are rarely single-varietal bottlings, but instead are complex field blends-almost always 5-6 grapes at a minimum, but sometimes up to 25 or 30. Her Tinto is a luscious blend of Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional, Castelao, complimented by small amounts of Syrah, and Alicante Bouschet. The family employs the traditional concrete lagares for fermentation, extracting just the right amount of flavor and color. Aromas of violets, ginger and fine-spices, and serious red fruit by fresh are followed wild berry fruit and a fine-bead of minerality on the palate. The wine is serious enough to be paired with the most elevated meals or age beautifully, but it's also fun enough for burgers on the barbeque this summer.

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Intense red berry and crushed red plum flavors are supported by fresh acidity and firm tannins. Touriga Nacional blend."

JAMES SUCKLING 94 POINTS - "Wow. I love the texture and beauty of this young Brunello. Medium to full body with a dense and tightly compacted palate. Dried cherry light cedar and chocolate. It goes on for minutes. Gorgeous now. Excellent acid fruit balance, but will improve with age."

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautifully finessed and elegant wine. It offers a very pleasing sense of balance in which no one characteristic overpowers the next. A dark ruby appearance gives the wine an open and inviting personality. The bouquet produces a subtle medley of wild berry, blueberry, underbrush and toasted almond aromas. The mouthfeel is lean, but it also shows polished and silky persistence. If you don't have the patience to wait, it tastes great even at this early stage."

We are so excited that another dynamite vintage of Petalos has just arrived. Think burgundy with a hint of Northern Rhone syrah.

During the late 1980's, Alvaro Palacios traveled his native Spain selling French barriques to winemakers. But his journeys had a second purpose: to find the best place to achieve his goal of making Spain's greatest wines. Alvaro wanted-incredibly steep hillside vineyards, distinctive terroirs and, most importantly, ancient vineyards of Mencia—a unique red grape believed to be brought by French pilgrims during the Middle Ages. Meanwhile, his nephew Ricardo Perez had finished enological studies in Bordeaux and was traveling across France-absorbing everything he could about great wines. He worked the harvest at Chateau Margaux, and did internships at other Bordelais firms like Moueix (Petrus, Trotanoy, etc.). He also visited Alvaro frequently and came to share a belief in Bierzo's potential. In 1998, the two decided on a joint venture and set out in search of the region's finest old vineyards. Alvaro and Ricardo found promising sites in a number of villages but shortly came to believe that the greatest potential lay in a little town on Bierzo's western border named Corullon. Old vineyards lined the precipitous hillsides there, and the local soils were extremely poor-composed mostly of schist-but with incredible diversity. The minute variations in soils and exposures across this zone immediately reminded the two of Burgundy's Cote d'Or, or Piedmont's Langhe hills. In Corullon, Alvaro and Ricardo believe they have found a unique combination of soils, old vines, and a distinctive variety that will yield their own grands crus.

This beautiful wine is delicate with highly suggestive floral aromas displaying violets and dried roses along with hints of black fruit and roasted coffee. With it's Pinot Noir-like quality, it's medium body and velvety texture evokes notions of ripe black fruit on the palate and mineral undertones. Tannins are soft and well integrated, good acidity and a kiss of smokiness on the finish.

WINE ADVOCATE 92+ POINTS - "The entry level 2015 Pétalos del Bierzo, their regional wine, in the new official category that will start working in the appellation from the 2017 vintage, a blend of many different vineyards planted with field blends, where the breakdown might come to some 5% white varieties (Valenciana/Doña Blanca, Godello and Palomino/Jerez) and around 1% other reds (Pan y Carne, Negrada and Gran Negro), all from vines ranging between 40 and 90 years of age on slopes (half of the grapes around the village of Corullón and the remainder in the rest of Bierzo). It's a showy, approachable, aromatic and open version of Pétalos, and as I tasted it later on in the season, it felt more polished and round, with a lush texture. It's extremely aromatic, in a way similar to the 2012. This is always one of the best values not only of Bierzo but for the whole of Spain. 310,000 bottles and 2,000 magnums produced."

"These blockbuster efforts are made by Dan Kravitz at the co-op in Tautavel. They more than over-deliver and offer classic Roussillon flair and texture, yet back it up with solid mid-palate concentration and sound structure. Don't miss them." - WINE ADVOCATE

We just received another fantastic wine from Domaine Cabirau. We have featured Cabirau before (their "Serge & Nicolas" bottling was one of our top French wines for 2017), so we're very familiar with this domaine. We were not surprised, therefore, when it was the unanimous pick to be our January "Wine of the Month." It has all the bells and whistles with differing vineyard ages, non-intrusive vinification, excellent terroir and a great track record. But really, it's about how good the wine is and the quality-to-price ratio; in both of those categories Cabirau definitely goes yard!

After 27 years importing wine, importer Hand Picked Selections' President Dan Kravitz took the plunge and purchased his own vineyard in Roussillon. Named Cabirau after the vineyard's original designation, the domaine is in the town of Maury, on a hillside below the ancient Cathar fortress of Queribus. The vineyards are planted in soils dominated by black schist. The Grenache was unoaked, the Syrah and Carignan underwent malolactic fermentation and 5 months maturation in 500L demi-muids.

The nose is filled with rich red fruits, plum, red berries with undercurrents of herbal and spice notes intertwined, strawberry tea and forest floor. The palate continues with both red and black fruits and a lush mouthfeel tempered by both excellent acidity and moderate tannins. A swath of minerality bordered by spices and herbal notes adds complexity and more flavor components as the rich fruits take a curtain call for the lengthy finish. The fruit definitely has top billing but the supporting cast of flavors and scents makes the overall production a sure bet during award season. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Carignan

ROBERT PARKER 90-92 POINTS - "Scheduled to be bottled soon, the 2014 Côtes du Roussillon will certainly be an outstanding wine, as well as serious value. Offering up killer notes of cassis, licorice, toasted bread and cracked pepper, it’s medium bodied, fresh and lively, with a seamless, sexy, yet elegant texture. Less concentrated than the 2013s, it nevertheless has plenty of depth, as well as fine tannin on the finish. It will drink nicely on release and evolve gracefully for 3-4 years or more."

WINE ADVOCATE 93-96 POINTS - "A new cuvee from Dan Kravitz, the 2015 Maury Sec First Things First is a blend of 60% Grenache, 22% Carignan and 18% Syrah that had 75% of the crop brought in at the “correct” time, and 25% brought in over a week later due to broken equipment in the cellar. Scheduled to be bottled in August or October, it offers sensational notes of black raspberries, cassis, violets and graphite as well as full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannin and an undeniable sexiness that makes it already impossible to resist. Count me a fan and I’d suggest breaking more equipment during harvest in the future as well (or just harvest later)"

"These are terrific wines that show the classic fruit and minerality of the region, yet also possess a beautiful sense of elegance and purity. They should be on any wine lover's short list." - Wine Advocate

"Full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannin and an undeniable sexiness that makes it already impossible to resist." - Jeb Dunnuck

We are excited to offer another fantastic red from Domaine Cabirau. As you may know, we recently featured their entry level wine as our wine of the month and have twice selected the Serge and Nicolas cuvee as one of our top wines of the year. Now, for the first time, Domaine Cabirau has released a prestige bottling which is appropriately named "FIRST THINGS FIRST." This is a full-bodied stunner loaded with rich, dark fruit flavors which seduce the palate and is definitely a crowd pleaser.

Jeb Dunnuck of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate reviewed this wine and loved it! He gave the wine a 93- 96 point score based on his initial tasting and called the wine "impossible to resist." He also described First Things first as having "sensational notes of black raspberries, cassis, violets."

Importer Dan Kravitz had been importing wine for nearly three decades and became aware of a vineyard in the Roussillon with excellent potential. He took the plunge and purchased the vineyard in the town of Maury, where one can grow high quality grapes at a reasonable price. The attention to detail and focus on quality show in this wine which showcases perfectly ripened fruit, amazing freshness and a very long finish.

This wine has tons of flavor and represents an outstanding value which satisfies both the palate and the wallet. Don't miss it!

"A sensational wine that will compete with wines five times the price." Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate

"I've raved time and time again about the quality -and value - coming from Domaine Lafage's Jean-Marc Lafage." Robert Parker

"Buy it." Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate

Domaine Lafage is on amazing roll where everything they touch seems to turn to gold. Creating custom cuvées with its importer Eric Solomon, they are producing absolutely gorgeous wines. Lafage first came upon our radar with Bastide Miraflors, Narassa and Tessellae which have been huge hits with our customers. We recently emailed out the previous vintage of Novellum Chardonnay and our customers went nuts for it. We really enjoyed that wine, but this wine is even better!

Both Robert Parker and Jeb Dunnuck of the Wine Advocate have high praise for the wines of Domaine Lafage including Novellum Chardonnay. It is remarkable for Dunnuck to state that Novellum competes favorably with wine selling for more than $50.00 per bottle! Even more noteworthy is his comparison of Novellum to boutique Sonoma producer Mark Aubert. Aubert crafts amazing and very expensive wine available only to his mailing list customers.

The beauty of Novellum is it combines the perfectly-ripened fruit and richness you might find in a high quality California Chardonnay with the brightness and minerality you expect in Burgundy. This combination makes it the perfect crossover wine which appeals to those who enjoy either California or French Chardonnay.

This is an excellent "Everyday Drinker" that you can open up during the week to enjoy with dinner or serve with confidence at parties, knowing all in attendance will be happy. Domaine Lafage's Novellum is a delicious wine, which would make a terrific case purchase. And as the review from Wine Advocate simply says, "Buy it!"

ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS - "A sensational wine that will compete with wines five times the price, the 2016 Novellum Chardonnay is the real deal and actually reminded me of a Chardonnay from Mark Aubert in California's Sonoma County. White peach, crushed rocks, spice and brioche notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that has depth, layered texture and length. Buy it."

We always look forward to any new release from any of the Gil Family Estate wineries-- their group of small family wineries, scattered throughout the Spanish geography, have an excellent track record with our staff, customers and palates. If anything, the 2015 "Clio" exceeded our expectations in its depth, character and quality. Clio is a blend of 70% Monastrell from very old vines and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested in small baskets to prevent bruising. The juice spends 24 months aging in new American and French Oak barrels.

Inky purple/black in color, Clio seemingly shines in the glass. The nose is filled with spice, mineral earth, cassis and black cherry fruit, charcuterie, dark florals, mesquite, vanilla, chocolate and a melange of mixed, concentrated dark fruits and berries: lots going on! Upon tasting, the lush mouthfeel is enwrapped with the dark fruits found in the nose: cassis, blackberries, black cherry. The tannins are smooth and the acidity is excellent and uplifting-- great structure in this muscular wine. This is such a zen wine-- it's a paragon of balance and so comfortable in its skin. The flavors, textures, scents, tannins and acidity work together, lifting the totality of the wine to a pinnacle they wouldn't be able to hit on their own.

This is why we look forward to releases from the Juan Gil family of wines-- they tend to be, like this one, stunning. If anything, this release feels a bit "bigger" in the mouth in terms of structure and acidity-- the lush mouthfeel at first taste is tempered by the brilliant acidity. The finish brings dark fruits (black raspberry compote, black cherry) and savory/earthy tastes together-- fruit enmeshed with black tea, hints of graphite and smoked meat, lasting for minutes on the palate. Kinda wanted a steak with this one! Amazing wine (again!).

October’s Wine of the Month is a fantastic Rhone blend from a tremendous vintage made by one of France’s great winemaking families. The Perrin family is best known as the proprietors of Chateau de Beaucastel, which is one of the great producers of Chateauneuf du Pape in the Rhone Valley. They are also pioneers in Paso Robles where they partnered with the Haas family to establish Tablas Creek and helped establish this region as a special place for Rhone-style blends. Add the fact that Beaucastel was chosen as Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year and it’s safe to say the Perrin family knows a thing or two about making great wine.

The Perrins sourced grapes for this outstanding Côtes du Rhône from their premium village vineyards. Grenache is grown in clay/limestone soils adding bright blueberry and Kirsch notes. The Syrah comes from terraced vineyards of Vinsobres which are rich in quartz and marl, bringing a warming blackberry and spice character to the mix. Finally, the Mourvèdre adds plum flavors along with additional complexity and depth.

Famille Perrin’s Cotes du Rhone is a delicious wine and a terrific value, which beautifully expresses the 2015 vintage. The vines produced berries rich in phenolic compounds, expressive aromatics and deep flavors. This is a great everyday wine which is complementary to most any type of food and very enjoyable on its own.

Bright ruby in color with purple reflections. Aromatically expressive with notes of crushed violets, dark raspberries, cherries, blackberry and licorice. On the palate, this wine shows perfectly ripened fruit with Kirsch, blueberry, raspberry and plum and a hint of baking spice. The mouthfeel is generous yet balanced with beautiful, silky tannins. The overall impression is one that is harmonious with a wonderful polished texture, culminating in a surprisingly long finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

Italy has struck again! Coming out of the ancient Etruscan land of vines is a wine that is further proof of how talented the Italians are at re-imagining themselves in the modern wine world (and doing it at reasonable prices!) Tenuta Fanti's "Poggio Torto" (poe-joe tore-toe) is neither a rustic throwback nor mass-produced, characterless product; this is a wine that reflects brash, young vines producing happy fruit on warm, Mediterranean hillsides. It is the result of the hard-working Fanti family, which has used its extensive land holdings in the renowned Montalcino region dating back to the early 1800s to turn sustainably-farmed grapes into this reasonably-priced wine without sacrificing quality.

"Poggio Torto" is a thoroughly satisfying wine in its class: medium-full in body, with juicy, fresh fruit like a blend of plum, black cherry, and blackberry, fresh herbal & purple floral qualities like Lavendar, couched in velvety, earthy & licorice-like tannins that make the wine gently "chewy." From the judicious use of older oak barrels, and shorter mellowing time in them, you can find a subtle cedar background that adds dimension to the palate. Thanks to fantastic growing conditions in 2015, the wine has all that concentrated, delicious fruit ripeness without being over-alcoholic; at around 13.5% abv, it's just enough to be warming without covering up the flavors. The overall result is a wine that is hard to stop tasting! Even better, it goes well with protein-rich dishes like New York strip steak, grilled pork chops (with a sour cherry marinade or sauce), or a hearty bowl of lentils cooked in a broth with herbs de Provence (remember the Lavendar).

The blend of the 2015 Poggio Torto is dominated by the native Sangiovese (around 60%), complemented by soft, plummy Merlot (25%) and floral, black-fruited Syrah (10%), followed by a touch of herbal, dark-fruited, and firmly-structured Cabernet Sauvignon (5%).

This wine is well-priced at it's usual $17 price tag, but we're able to get it to you for only $12.99! Do as the Italians, and take pride in getting this wine at buon mercato (a good deal)!

JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "I love the clarity of this wine with blackcurrant, licorice and raspberry character on the nose and palate. Full-bodied yet so refined and polished. Pointed acidity. Excellent all around!"

Côte des Roses celebrates the Mediterranean lifestyle. The Languedoc appellation stretches along the Mediterranean coast from the Spanish border as far as the city of Nîmes, along the foothills of the Montagne Noire and the Cévennes. The soils are highly varied, mainly with hard limestone and schist, but also gravel transported by the rivers of the Languedoc region.

The warm, windy climate (“semi-arid Mediterranean climate with mild winters”) helps the grapes to ripen in good, healthy condition, while retaining all their fresher qualities thanks to the altitude and the influence of the sea which eases the scorching summer heat. The bottle is original with its base in the shape of a rose, created by a young designer from the Ecole Boulle. A wine to be given in the same way you would offer a bunch of roses!

A soft, pale, brilliant pink with bluish tints developing over time towards more orangey nuances. The bouquet releases aromas of summer fruits, cassis and redcurrant. Floral notes of rose along with hints of grapefruit complete the picture. The finish is fresh, offering notes of candy. On the palate the impression is fresh and full, with great aromatic persistence and balance.

Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made using barley sourced from Crisp Maltings, Portgordon (Portgordon is a village in Moray, Scotland). After the barley has been malted and mashed, it is fermented in wooden washbacks for approximately two days. The wooden washbacks used by Glenlivet are more difficult and expensive to maintain as compared to the stainless steel washbacks used by most Scottish distilleries, but impart a distinctive, floral quality to the whisky.

After the barley has been fermented, it is distilled twice - first through Glenlivet’s wash still, and then again through Glenlivet’s spirits still. Originally designed by George Smith, the copper-pot stills have a unique, lantern-like shape, which encourages contact between the whisky and the copper. The copper strips the whisky of any impurities it may have, and provides for a lighter and more pure flavor profile.

Following distillation, The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky - part of Glenlivet’s Classic Range - is matured in a mixture of cask types, including American Oak and European Oak. In particular, the American Oak lends the whisky its vanilla character and distinct smoothness, while the 12 years spent inside both barrels gives the whisky aromas of honeysuckle and summertimes fruits, along with notes of fresh pineapple and bitter cocoa on the palate. The whisky has a rich, creamy finish filled with lasting touches of hazelnuts and marzipan.

This is truly a bountiful time for Rhone wines. With outstanding back to back vintages of 2015 and 2016, we and our customers are enjoying these delicious wines for as long as we can. In particular, we have found some fantastic wines from the Southern Rhone, which have turned out to be some of our most popular wines in the store.

The wines of Guillaume Gonnet are a perfect case in point. The quality of the fruit and the depth of flavor really stood out when we tasted these at the store. The Chateauneuf du Pape is a fantastic wine and phenomenal value. It is the rare Chateauneuf that provides such pleasure at under $30.00. The fruit is sourced from the famed Croix du Bois and La Crau vineyards with an average age of 50 year old vines. Showing more complexity, richness and lushness on the mid-palate, the finish for this one goes on for a long, long time.

The Gonnet family has been in the Rhone since at least 1600. Etienne Gonnet and Jeanne Brunier married and created Font de Michelle in 1950. Today the domaine is being managed by the grandchild of Etienne, Guillaume Gonnet. Before joining his family as 3rd generation winemaker, Guillaume travelled the world working in some of the most famous wineries in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa Valley, New Zealand and finally in Australia where he met his wife, Kelly.

Guillaume and Kelly have purchased several plots in Chateauneuf du Pape. These, along with vines inherited from Guillaume’s family are farmed following biodynamic agricultural principles. The Robin on the label embodies their passion for the terroir and their respect for the health of the vineyards. Their wines are well-balanced with supple, approachable tannins and very little wood influence.

Vinified in a blend of concrete and tank. Beautiful ripe cherries, ripe blue fruits with complex mineral and garrigue flavors. Powerful, plush and ripe middle and finish. Very polished and balanced.

WINE ADVOCATE 91-93 POINTS - "A 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah (unusual for the appellation), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Bel Ami boasts a nose of blueberries, cola and spice. About 2,000 cases will be bottled of this rich, velvety-textured wine."
