 Borao 2012 Berola, Spain

Borsao Berola is born in mountain vineyards 550 to 700 meters above sea level. The winery from which it hails, Bodegas Borsao, is situated in Borja City, in the Northwest of the province of Zaragoza. They have been the origin and engine of the D.O. "Campo de Borja" in Aragón, North-Eastern Spain or the well known "empire of the garnacha."

Before we opened the bottle, we saw that it is a Jorge Ordoñez Selections wine. In our experience, this bodes well for the juice inside the bottle as we are big fans of Mr. Ordoñez and his acumen in selecting the best wines. This 2012 Berola did not disappoint and was an easy call to be our wine of the month.

The nose is spicy with jammy berries garnering equal attention. Blueberries and raspberries, plum preserves are evident as well, with beef jerky adding a touch more spice and salty minerality. The palate highlights cherry, chocolate, mixed berries and minerality as a healthy dose of tannins keeps it uplifting. A veritable 'baby Veraton', fans of Alta Moncayo will love this one. A note of graphite and dark florals lead to a lenghty, viscous finish of ripe fruits and easy, measured spices.

ROBERT PARKER 91 POINTS - "Lastly, the 2012 Berola is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French and American small oak barrels for ten months, and an additional 14 months in bottle prior to release. Loads of almost floral notes jump from the glass of this fragrant, deep ruby/purple wine. It is medium to full-bodied, showing good spice box, licorice, blackcurrants and black cherries. It is a sexy, seductive, luscious wine that should drink well for another 2-4 years." Item #381888

Hahn 2015 “GSM” Proprietary Red, California

Hahn's GSM (60% Grenache, 37% Syrah, and 3% Mourvedre) takes its inspiration from the Rhone Valley of southern France where Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are some of the most popular grape types grown. Each of the three grape types blended into this wine adds distinctive aromas and flavors. Grenache contributes raspberry, strawberry and cherry flavors, while Syrah lends color, tannins and hints of blueberry and black pepper. The Mourvedre adds richness to the mid-palate and lengthens the dry finish. Item #228270

Ana 2014 Chardonnay “Owners Choice”, Romaina

A Chardonnay in a Bordeaux bottle? Yes, and it is really tasty! The Ana "Owner's Choice" is a reserve-level offering from the Jidvei Winery located in the Tarnave-Jidvei DOC of Transylvania, Romania. Wines from this area have been made for a long time: Herodotus wrote about them in 600 BC. Winemaking in this former Roman province really took off in the 12th century when Saxons from the Rhine and Mosel valleys migrated to Tarnave. The vineyards are located on hillsides 400 to 600 meters above sea level. The grapes are chilled immediately after harvest then fermented to dryness in 600 liter barrels. We found this delightful Chardonnay to have aromas and flavors of green apples, hazelnuts, white nectarines and a touch of vanilla. While the wine is fruit forward it has a clean, crisp, dry finish. It received a Gold Medal at the 2016 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. We drank this with fish tacos and thought it was both delightful and a great value. Item #372099

2 Bottles of red wine (tax & shipping not included)

Craggy Range 2011 Merlot “Te Kahu”, New Zealand

Blackberry, cinnamon, and minerals mesh for an intense and complex aroma and flavor profile. Layers of fine tannin lend tension to the opulent fruit flavors and provide the framework for the long and intense finish.

The fruit for Te Kahu is grown in the Hawkes Bay Gimblett Gravels Vineyard, which has one of the warmest, driest, most sundrenched climates in New Zealand. Stony gravel in the soil forces the vines to fight for water, giving the grapes a particular vibrancy. Fruit was hand harvested and destemmed before undergoing fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine was matured for 13 months in French oak barriques, 19% new. Item #302734

Colome 2013 Malbec, Argentina

JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "A dense and very rich red with blueberry, sliced mushroom and earth character. Full body, yet tight and reserved. Gorgeous to drink now but will improve in the next few years."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Blackberry and roasted plum, supported by firm acidity and tannins. Notes of slate and black pepper show midpalate, with a finish that offers dark chocolate accents. Drink now through 2020." Item #380683
