Dafnios 2014 Liatiko Red, Dafnes, Crete

This is a delicious dry red made from the Greek variety Liatiko. Liatiko is mostly found on the island of Crete which may be its place of origin. We were delighted by this smooth, ruby-colored red. It has distinct floral and spicy aromas (we noticed hints of cinnamon), good fruit on the palate and fresh acidity and soft tannins on the finish. Serve this value-priced red with burgers, grilled sausages, lamb or grilled chicken.

Domaine Douloufakis was founded in 1930 by Dimitris Douloufakis. Dimitris' grandson, Nikolas, now runs the winery combining traditional methods with modern equipment. The estate's 70 acres of vineyards are certified organic and are located at an elevation of 1,800 feet in the Protected Designation of Origin Dafnes, a village close to Iraklio. Item #362311

Ryder Estate 2013 Pinot Noir, California

The wines of Ryder Estate are crafted from estate grown grapes out of Monterey County vineyards, located in California's golden Central Coast. The Monterey County growing region is a wonder, with a myriad of soils, elevations and microclimates that allow an array of varieties to be grown. The indelible influence of the Monterey Bay and the enormous submarine canyon that lies two miles below its surface results in cool coastal conditions throughout this growing region. Each variety grown is planted in the location that is most suitable for that grape and where the Ryder Estate team believes it can reach its full flavor potential.

Our California wine buyer tasted this and immediately knew we had a winner for our June Wine of the Month sweepstakes. Our Italian wine buyer was nearby and he had her taste it: "Chicken Dinner!" all over again (as in "Winner, winner...). It was locked in as our June wine and a bottle was sent my way, which I shared with our Champagne buyer in tasting. Yep, we were sold from first sip. This is one of the best Pinot Noirs we've seen at this price point (and drinks better than many we've tried that cost a lot more). Think California Central Coast classic structure and fruit with a touch of Burgundian joie de vivre and a soupcon of Oregonian ripeness.

The nose is filled with flambeed red fruits, cherry and raspberry, rich spice, earthiness and a touch of cola nut. In the mouth the fresh fruits take the lead again with mixed red berries and ripe cherry all suspended in a gorgeously lush mouthfeel that's light and lively with both acidity and rounded tannins. A touch of savory comes in at the mid-palate with brown spices and tilled soil but the fruit surges back to the lead in the finish as waves of cherry and boysenberry emanate across the palate long after the juice has gone down the gullet. Bright and buoyant, lush, tempered and balanced. This is beautiful Pinot Noir.

Domaine Richard 2014 Trois Chenes, France

The Wine Advocate's "Guide to the Best of 2014," three wines were listed as the "Greatest Value Wines of 2014." The first on the list? The 2013 Vincent Ricard "Les Trois Chênes." This is the new vintage, no ratings available yet but the wine is yummy! Item #345157

La Rioja Alta 2009 Vina Alberdi, Spain

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - The 2009 Viña Alberdi, from a much warmer growing season than 2008, was equally pure Tempranillo sourced from their vineyards in Rodezno and Labastida, matured in American oak barrels for two years, the first year in new barrels and the second year in used ones and it was racked four times. The nose is more backward than the 2008 and is a little closed, though slowly denotes more ripeness. The palate has round fruit, polished tannins and has less acidity than the 2008. It was bottled in March 2012. 500,000 bottles produced.

La Rioja Alta celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2015. Last year, I only tasted three wines from La Rioja Alta and I tasted six this time. The quality is as good as ever, with superb wines from the almost-perfect 2005 vintage coming into the market. Great Rioja, as traditional as it gets, in good quantity and moderate (and often plain great) prices. Item #19.95

Puramun 2013 Malbec Reserve, Argentina

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "If I liked the 2012, I liked the 2013 Malbec Reserva that I tasted a couple of weeks later even better. The profile is similar but it has the extra zip and freshness of the vintage. Nicely crafted and proportioned, it drinks well, but the oak is a little evident and should show better with little more time in bottle."

Puramun was only created in 2011 in Tupungato and are already in these pages, with the one wine I tasted leaving a good impression. It's the private project of José "Pepe" Galante, Salentein's winemaker and Catena's winemaker form 1976 to 2010! A new old name to watch! Item #381611

Rocca Montegrossi 2013 Chianti Classico, Italy

Rocca di Montegrossi is located near Monti in Chianti, one of the finest sections of Chianti Classico, about 7 km south of Gaiole in Chianti. Rocca di Montegrossi's Chianti Classico is the estate's flagship wine; it is a blend of about 90% Sangiovese, with Canaiolo and Colorino, and is produced every year. It ages for the most part in large casks and barrels made with oak from Allier, for 12-14 months. It is unfiltered, and after bottling ages another 12 months prior to release. In the glass it is lively ruby, with bright violet reflections, and on the nose displays the rich fruity aromas typical of the varietals, in particular forest berry fruit and sour cherries. Item #301255

Remondo Palacios 2011 Placet, Spain

Winemaker Notes: The only white wine made by famed Spanish winemaker Alvaro Palacios at his family's Rioja property, Placet Valtomelloso is an estate-grown wine made in very limited quantities from the indigenous Spanish grape variety, Viura. Placet, meaning "pleasing," is light gold in color and contains attractive aromas of ripe pineapple and green mango. Made in a vintage qualified as "excellent" by the D.O.C. Rioja, the 2011 Placet is full-bodied, with balanced acidity and hints of lemon verbena, thyme, grapefruit rind and orchard fruit on the palate An outstanding wine, with an ‘endless’ finish, it is enjoyable both when served alone or with any kind of food.

The colour of the wine is a very pale lemon; the nose contains hints of stone fruit, asparagus and pepper. The palate is what really grabbed my attention, with multi-layered texture and a fabulous nuttiness which adds weight, depth and richness. The finish is long and opulent. Item #381594
