Man Vintners 2014 “Ou Kalant” Cabernet Sauvignon, South Africa

“It all started as a simple plan: to make a wine that we’d love to buy. We wanted quality wine that offered excellent value and great packaging. Not exactly an epiphany, perhaps, but enough to motivate us into action.

Of course, first we had to come up with a name. To keep peace in the families, we took our wives’ initials (we each have one wife) — that is how we explained to Marie, Anette and Nicky that we were going to be "busy" most weekends. "It's for you!" we told them. And mostly it’s true.

We are José Conde and brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh. We started making wine together in 2001. We’re further supported by a group of dedicated grape growers from the Agter-Paarl region.

From our first 300 cases made in a tractor shed, we have grown to producing over 175 000 cases per year and exporting to 25 countries. Our biggest selling wines are our chenin blanc and cabernet sauvignon, but our area is also well known for shiraz and pinotage. And we think our other wines are pretty good, too.

Regarding this Cabernet: "...this ou kalant ("old rascal") remains a firm favorite, outfoxing the others by combining New World ripe fruit flavors with Old World elegance and charm."

And such a charmer it is! The quality of this wine for just under 8 bucks is mind-blowing. The nose is a heady mix of ripened fruit and earth, leather with cassis, cherry reduction, wood spice and tilled soil. Before the flavors even hit the palate once sipped, the silky viscosity and smooth tannins seduce the tongue-- then the ripe cherry and cassis flavors mingle with mixed, concentrated berries and plums. Dark spice and earthiness come in at mid-palate as the mélange of sweet fruits slowly set in the gullet, like a winter sunset on a clear Indian summer day, lasting and lasting, memorable and delicious. Cave Du Marmandais Soubiran 2014 Rouge, France

Chateau Soubiran is located in the Cotes du Marmandais in South West France, just east of Bordeaux. Using Bordeaux varietals, this wine features an abundance of rich, flavorful fruit and represents an excellent value in comparison to wines of comparable quality coming out of Bordeaux.

The Soubiran family property is located on the slopes of the right bank of the Garonne River. Vineyards have been planted on the property since 1868 and the estate totals approximately 30 acres under vine. The vineyards were replanted in the 80’s with two principal grape varieties, Merlot and the Malbec to take advantage of the clay and limestone dominant soil.

Deep ruby with purple highlights. This wine has an elegant bouquet with florals along with red and dark fruits which are perfectly ripened, complemented by notes of spice, herbs and licorice. On the palate, the wine is round and plush in texture with velvety tannins. Rich in flavor, this wine boasts flavors of plum, cherry and blackberry culminating in a pleasing finish. 78% Merlot, 22% Malbec Item#345700

Tablas Creek 2014 Proprietary Red, California

Every so often, you'll peruse our newsletter and see that we ask why more people are doing things like Winery "A". Well…this is one of those times! While the noteworthy wines from Tablas Creek are nothing new (but they are still exciting), their Patelin bottlings are new. This blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Counoise comes from their Westside Paso neighbors who have planted vineyards using Tablas clones.

In theory, this Patelin red should be tight, young, and tart…but on the contrary, this wine is rich, concentrated and immensely delicious. In fact, our buyer wouldn't spit this wine out! Deep ruby/garnet in color, the nose is loaded with Asian spices, raspberry, black cherry, and orange marmalade while the palate follows suit and adds hints of grilled meats, graphite, and cocoa. Rich, flavorful, and with silky tannins, this is a great value in wine, and one that just may make you ask yourself why you haven't tried these wines before!

Castellare 2014 Chianti Classico, Italy

This Chianti Classico shows well-integrated aromas of tart red cherries, tobacco, sunbaked earth, and a hint of cedar spice. On the palate, firm structure and refreshing acidity make it a very versatile food wine. Grapes are fermented with ambient yeasts partially in stainless steel and in barrel. The wine is then put in cement for up to eight months to rest and lock in its fruity freshness. This is a successful expression with an easy but very clean and lean approach. Pair this wine with lasagna, ragù sauces, roasted rabbit, or braised veal shank. Item #301495

Terlano 2015 Terlaner Classico, Italy

A great deal and the best place to begin . . . this “house blend” of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay, and 10% Sauvignon Blanc has been made for over 100 years and earned DOC recognition for the small town of Terlano. The Terlaner is a true synthesis of flavors where it is virtually impossible to pick out the grape varieties one by one. Tangerine, lime-zest, and fragrant blossom aromas make for an enticing nose. The palate is both luxuriously silky with pear fruit, but also lively and firm. Item #302110

Bereche Brut 2013 Reserve, Champagne, France

PETER LEIM 1 1/2 STARS -This is made of roughly equal parts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, and 70 percent of it was vinified in barrel. It’s ample in body, its creamy notes of stone fruits, orange citrus and green apple underlined by stony minerality, and it finishes with excellent length and depth. While Bérêche’s Brut Réserve is always a solid buy, this version is particularly compelling. Last tasted: 1/16." Item #325548
