Chateau La Grange 2010 Bordeaux, France

We have a fantastic February Wine of the Month-- a 2010 Bordeaux for under ten bucks! 2010 is one of the top Bordeaux vintages in the last 40 years or so and good fortune struck both banks, allowing wines from all areas and classification ranks to benefit. As the old maritime aphorism goes, "a rising tide lifts all boats" ...and wines like this bargain La Grange bear witness. How good was the vintage? Let's revisit a few reports:

"Bordeaux appears to have another superb vintage on its hands following the 2010 harvest... With warm, dry weather persisting throughout the region for much of the growing season, producers reported that their vats were full of young wines with intense color, strong tannins and higher-than-usual alcohol levels..." - Wine Spectator "2010 Vintage Report"

"Producers and critics are resisting saying ‘best ever’, but this focussed, serious, ageworthy vintage that is drawing comparisons to 1982 and even 1947 is certain to set record release prices... As with great vintages, which 2010 undoubtedly is, comparisons are made with previous years and at this level of quality, there are few contenders. Only 2005, and to a lesser extent 2000, were mentioned from the past decade..." -Bordeaux 2010: "A Modern Classic" Steven Spurrier, Decanter.com

"it is an inescapable truth that 2010 has produced another year of compelling Bordeaux that will go down as a prodigious vintage alongside 2009... Take your pick – this news is either tragic or mythical, but I have tasted enough wines from 2005, 2009 and 2010 to realize that these may be the three greatest Bordeaux vintages I have tasted in my career."

-Robert Parker

So, finally, how's the wine in and of itself? Excellent, to say the least. The quality found within possesses way more heft than the very affordable price might suggest. The nose showcases dark fruits, plum, black cherry, white pepper, garrigue and cocoa. The palate is all about finesse with fine tannins enwrapping classic notes of cherry, chocolate, currant and dusty earth. The finish is rich and refined as red fruits, spice and earth slowly fade. Try with red meats, apropos cheeses, lamb or even chocolate (mid-month, of course!) Item #345832

Creta 2013 Roble, Spain

WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The 2013 Creta Roble, is also a custom cuvée from importer Eric Solomon. Made from 60-plus-year-old vines from an area of Ribera del Duera known as La Horra (Pingus and Aalto emerged from this area as well). This expansive, savory, complex, deep ruby/purple red wine shows notes of new saddle leather, black and red currants, has a savory, medium-bodied expansive mouthfeel, with loads of black fruits, licorice, subtle smoke and earth. This is a lovely, sexy, opulent style of wine to drink over the next 4-5 years." Item #381886

Colome 2016 Torrontes, Argentina

The characteristic white wine grape of Argentina has recently been linked with the Malvasia grape vis-à-vis DNA research. And the wonderful aromas released certainly suggest a Malvasia heritage: notes of peach, apricot, honeysuckle and general floral tones; simply beautiful. The palate echoes the florals and again, stone fruits come to the fore, all enwrappedin a light background minerality. With warmer weather starting to make an early appearance, the Colome 2015 Torrontes will bring a touch of early Spring back, a crisp morning in the garden, the trees in bloom, the pond teeming with life.

Substainably farm Vineyards.Sustainable winegrowing not only improves wine quality, but helps to compete in the global market place where consumers are increasingly interested in knowing that the foods and wines they enjoy are produced in an environmentally friendly manner.” Robert P. Koch, President & CEO of the Wine Institute. Item #380452

Daou 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, California

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90-92 POINTS - "The straight 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon should be another outstanding vintage of this cuvee and it has full-bodied richness, beautiful concentration and lots of dark chocolate, plum and smoked herb aromas and flavors. It has more obvious structure than the 2014 did at this stage as well." Item #214800

Nugan 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon “Alcira”, Australia

Eucalyptus and mint, two classic descriptors for the Aussie terroir, are clearly in the nose as hints of pencil lead and fennel are surmounted by dark red fruits, jammy raspberry and cassis: beautiful, rich and deep. The tannins in this "Alcira" Cab are fine and silky, uplifting broad flavors of dark cherries, cassis and cacao. A pinch of spice and earth lead to a long, smooth finish with, again, lasting deep, dark red fruits. Item #378428

Love Block Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand

Loveblock is the project of Kim Crawford who helped transform the New Zealand wine industry and make Sauvignon Blanc a household name around the world. Kim Crawford's Sauvignon Blanc continues to be a huge hit with our customers. For his new Loveblock wine,Kim Crawford purschased land and planted vineyards on the hilltops overlooking Marlborough's Awatere Valley. His aim is to create the best wine to express this extraordinary place. New Zealand's signature varietal tends to be bold and big with pugent aromatics. The Loveblock wine focuses more on texture and finesse, while retaining nice acidy. It has beautiful aromatics of white peach, melon and subtle herbaceous notes. On the palate, the mouth feel is generous with nice lift, refinement and minerality. Hints of stone fruit and citrus linger on the long finish. This wine is complex and subtle. Think of it as Kim Crawford dressed up for a night out on the town. Item #383090

Henri Goutorbe Brut Prestige, Champange, France

STEPHEN TANZER 90 POINTS - "(Disgorged June 1, 2009) Light, bright yellow. Highly floral bouquet of honeysuckle, pear, nectarine and honey. Weighty, palate-coating orchard and pit fruit flavors are enlivened by juicy acidity, which adds back-end cut and juiciness. I like this wine's blend of richness and energy."
