Vigilance 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, California

Located in Lake County, California, known for the cleanest air quality in the United States, you will find Vigilance Vineyards & Winery set amongst the historic Anderson Marsh sanctuary. Preservation of the land and wildlife fit in well with the beliefs of Clay Shannon, owner of this "breathtaking slice of heaven." Certified sustainably farmed, they follow the Ovis Cycle™, a way of working harmony with Mother Nature vis-à-vis the use of sheep (ovis is Latin for sheep). The vineyards feed the sheep, the sheep feed the vines; lamb feeds the people, people drink the wine and wear wool. This leads to a reduced use of mowers, tractors and weed eaters (and the fossil fuels that power said machines); a reduced use of herbicides; better productivity for the human crews (thanks to sheep eating what otherwise would be manually removed, leaves, etc.); wildfire prevention and protection (again, sheep diet); erosion protection and farmland restoration.

Now if, after going through all that in the first paragraph, the wine was okay or average, it would be disappointing. This is not the case. The wine is across-the-board outstanding and drinks way above its price point. That the wine tastes this good lends weight to their described practices and encourages the continuation of the cycle.

Tasting Notes - Lovely ripe red fruits, plum and currants in the fore, lead in the nose. Black cherries, a hint of incense, cedar and rose garden scents follow, making for a heady perfume. The palate continues with more red fruits, cherries particularly, aloft in a sea of rounded tannins and ample acidity. A touch of wood spice and cocoa lead to a sweet, rich finish. Overall? This is a great value play-- a spot-on Cal Cab loaded with plenty of fruits, spice, depth and "stuffing" (structure through tannins, acidity). If you haven't yet, it's time to get the grill out and fire up some burgers and steaks, lamb or game, and have a few bottles of Vigilance Cab on hand. Item #271090

La Rame 2014 Bordeaux, France

The vineyards for this lovely red are at the base of the hillside vineyards of the estate in the village of Sainte Croix du Mont and are composed of sand, limestone and clay. The grape varieties are Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and the average age of the vines is thirty (30) years. The wine is fermented and aged in temperature-controlled vats and is bottled usually one year after harvest. Approximately 40,000 bottles are produced and we reserve 12,000 bottles for the US market.

Perfumed new wood aromas lead into a wine that has its fair share of wood influence. Rich black fruit is also found, which is balanced with the toastiness. It’s ripe and likely to offer even more pleasure in the next 2–3 years. Item  #345895

Pine Ridge 2015 Chenin Blanc/Viognier, California

Pine Ridge has one of the most solid portfolios in California crafting flavorful Cabernets, Merlots, and Chardonnays; but what often strikes us most is their Chenin Blanc - Viognier blend! This wine has been one of our perennial favorites for years. It is a rather unconventional blend, but once you taste the flavors and the refreshing qualities of the wine, we know you’ll be hooked just as we have been!

Pine Ridge's winemaker Michael Beaulac likes the Chenin Blanc harvested early to maintain its bright acidity, while Viognier brings its signature fragrant bouquet. The 2015 bottling of this distinctive blend opens with a dazzling spectrum of fruit and floral aromas, from crisp white peach, honeyed pear and sweet mango, to touches of fresh jasmine blossom and white chai tea. Filled with bright and juicy fruits, the palate flaunts flavors of succulent white nectarine, candied pineapple, green fig and subtle grapefruit. The crisp and slightly off-dry flavor profile lasts well through the clean and refreshing finish. Item #251310

La Rioja Alta 2010 Vina Alberdi, Spain

Winemakers Notes - Deep, ripe cherry red, with a clean, bright pink rim. Expansive nose, with dominating ripe red fruit, currants and liquorice, rounded off with sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, jam and spices. The wine is particularly well-balanced, with a smooth, elegant entry, medium body and sweet, tasty tannins. Ripe fruit, herbs, vanilla and caramel come together to mark a pleasant, agreeable finish.

Vina Alberdi is characterised by a notable food-pairing versatility. It is an ideal companion to appetisers, snacks and barbecues, perfect with rice, pastas and stews, and great with lightly-grilled meat and fish.

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "Ripe and intense aromas of strawberries and blackberries with hints of black ink. Savory notes, too. Full-bodied, chewy and focused with linear fruit and character. Very finely crafted. Drink or hold."

The Wine Advocate - "The 2010 Viña Alberdi is a Tempranillo blend from different vineyards from what they consider an extraordinary vintage. This wine is matured in American oak barrels built by their own coopers, the first year in new barrels and the second one in third-year barrels with four manual rackings. This is the younger of their wines, with even some red berry aromas and spicy oak, quite harmonious. The palate is lively, balanced and polished, with tasty flavors and bright acidity. Delicious. " Item #380785

Ouled Thaleb 2013 Signature Red Blend, Morocco

This stunningly good red is made from a blend of 50% Marselan (a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache), 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Carmenere. Winemaker Stephane Mariot uses only organically farmed grapes from 25-year-old vines. The vineyard is located at an altitiude of 300 feet on Morocco's Atlantic coast. Fermented in concrete tanks, the wine is aged in oak barrels (only 10% new). Aromas and flavors of cassis, blackberry and fine herbs lead to a smooth, long finish. Serve with beef, lamb or grilled sausages. Item #372350

Frederic Esmonin 2015 Haut Cotes Nuit, France

Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, Frédéric Esmonin has winemaking in his blood. His father, Andre, produced the grand cru Mazis-Chambertin for the Hospice de Beaune, and his cousin Sylvie is also well regarded. From the Prince of Pinot: "Judicious use of oak, excellent concentration at every level and early bottling maintaining freshness make Esmonin's wines very attractive and finely structured red Burgundies. They are among the first Burgundies from each vintage to arrive on our shores and they are very reasonably priced considering the pedigree of the vineyard sources." Item #345856

 Bermejos 2016 Rosado, Spain

The beautiful 2016 rosado from Bermejos has arrived. 100% Listan Negro from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, grown at the bottom of painstakingly-tended hoyos (the local name for the craters dug into the crunchy, black volcanic ash topsoil that coated the island of Lanzarote following a series of volcanic eruptions that started in 1730). One vine is planted at the bottom of each hoyo, which protects the plant from Lanzarote's relentless trade winds. Stone walls of volcanic rock rim the hoyos, an effort to prevent the soils from blowing onto the vines. In turn, the walls are constantly blown down and rebuilt. This is high-maintenance viticulture! Bermejos' visionary winemaker, Ignacio Valdera, makes it look easy. His wines are fascinating and crystal-clear expressions of this unique and mystical vinescape. The rosado is pale, dry, and refreshing, with hints of tangerine, orange blossom, dried oregano, and ash on the nose, followed by flavors of salty citrus and strawberries, blood orange, brine, and cherry pits, with ash, orange oil and rind on the finish. Complex yet crowd-pleasing. Item #377420
