Santa Ema 2007 Merlot Reserve, Maipo Valley,
Chile Pedro
Pavone-Voglino, who emigrated from Italy to
Chile in 1917, acquired the land that is now
Viña Santa Ema in 1931. Over the years the
family’s holdings in Chile have increased and
today their wines are among the best selling in
Chile. The Wine Advocate gave this
reserve bottling 90 points: “The 2007
Merlot Reserve is a glass-coating opaque
purple. The nose offers up coffee, mocha, and
cherry leading to a wine with no hard edges and
plenty of character. If all Merlots offered
this much pleasure, Pinot Noir would never have
become so popular. Santa Ema makes reliably
excellent wines at fair prices from the bottom
to the top of its portfolio.” This red will go
well with cheese and crackers, burgers or
grilled sausages. Style #360870.
Cameron Hughes 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 136,
Napa Valley Cameron Hughes is a négociant firm,
buying surplus wines from highly regarded
wineries and assembling them into a blend. They
found some excellent Rutherford and Oakville
Cabs which normally retail for a premium price.
Their winemaker blended the Cabs with just a
touch of Tempranillo to boost the grip on the
finish. When our California wine buyer tasted
the Lot
136, he immediately identified the wine as
reflecting the classic and prized “Rutherford
Dust” character which, in this case, is backed
by the wine’s lush fruit. This red displays
classic aromas and flavors of black currants and
blackberries followed by a hint of chocolate and
a creamy finish. This is drinking well now
although it will continue to improve in the
bottle. This great value will go well with beef
and lamb dishes. Allow the wine to breathe 15
or 20 minutes before serving. Style #209830.

Domaine de Coussergues 2008
Chardonnay Viognier Vins de Pays d’Oc This
delightful “country” white from the south of
France (Languedoc-Roussillon) is the kind of
wine you would order by the carafe at a sidewalk
café along the Mediterranean. Domaine de
Coussergues, an ancient Baronnie founded in 1495
by a land grant from Charles VIII, is owned by
the Baron Arnould de Bertier and his family.
Arnould represents the thirteenth generation of
the Sarret de Coussergues family to run the
estate. Robert Parker gave this quaffer 90
points: “My favorite is the medium-bodied, dry,
fresh, lively 2008 Chardonnay/Viognier (a 50-50
blend). Exotic tropical fruit, honeysuckle, and
floral undertones offer a lovely aromatic
display.” This crisp, fresh, lively aromatic
white is perfect for poolside sipping or with
lighter fish or chicken dishes as spring finally
arrives. Style #311333.

Scherrer Winery 2006 Pinot Noir,
Russian River Valley Fred Scherrer grew up with
wine. The Scherrer Vineyard, planted by Fred’s
grandfather in the Alexander Valley, is now
owned by Fred’s father and is the source of
grapes for Fred’s Cabernets and Zinfandels.
Some of the grapevines date back to 1912! Fred
gets his Pinot Noir grapes, however, from cooler
areas along the Russian River or Sonoma Coast.
He has a lot of experience with this area as he
was the winemaker at Dehlinger for ten years.
While at Dehlinger, Fred started his own label
in 1991. He went full-time with his own winery
in 1998. This Pinot displays aromas and flavors
of cherries and cranberries with a hint of spice
on the finish. Fred says his 2006 RRV is a
“sneaky” wine “because the bottle seems to empty
itself without one’s knowledge or permission”.
Sneak some of this first-rate, elegant Pinot
into your glass and serve it with veal, pork,
duck or mushroom based dishes. Should go well
grilled salmon too. Style #258120.

La Cana 2008 Albariño, Rías Baixas,
Galicia, Spain Rías Baixas is located in the
autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern
Spain. Known as “Green Spain” (and, also, the
Seafood Coast as it borders the Atlantic Ocean)
this area receives a lot of rain. Galicia was
influenced historically by the Viking and Celts.
The La Cana is a wine that will surprise you
with its zip. It shows a mix of nectarine and
apricot that is pure Albariño, but it is fresher
and crisper than most with a note of refreshing
minerality on the mid-palate which leads to the
crisp finish valued by wine-geeks. The winemaker
here is Alister Gardner from New Zealand and
while the flavors are purely a reflection of
Spanish soils and grapes, the wine’s artful
balance of fruit and acidity holds the same
excitement of many New Zealand wines. Great
with toasted almonds, olives, shellfish and hot
or cold seafood dishes.

Tribaut Schloesser "Le Brut"
The
Champagne Tribaut Schloesser house was
founded in 1929. The fourth
generation of the family works 55
acres of vines mainly located in the
villages of Romery, Fleury la Rivière
and Cormoyeux. Lying close to
d'Hautvillers, the Birthplace of
Champagne, these villages combine the
qualities of the Mountain of Reims and
the Marne Valley. Champagne Tribaut
Schlosser is a blend of 40% Pinot
Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier, and 30%
Chardonnay with 20-40% reserve from
older blends. This Brut is fresh,
fruity and displays citrus and orchard
fruit flavors such as apples, pears,
and lemon curd. Its forward fruit is
enhanced with a creamy doughy
component that makes this an ideal
party Champagne. Style #325653.
