large scaled, generous Terroirs that impresses for its sheer depth and body. Clean mineral notes frame the striking finish. This, too, is a breathtaking expression of pure Chardonnay fruit. The Terroirs is equal parts 2006 and 2007 juice from the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry. Disgorged July 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015."

which lead to very slow ripening of the fruit. The wines finally made it to maturity in the last week of October under beautiful skies. We received no rain until the 4th of November and we were able to pick each block slowly and methodically as they ripened. It was a winemakers dream. The temperate weather and extended time on the vines led to very typical cool climate Syrah characters."
"This 08 Syrah is sourced entirely from The Old Mill Vineyard, the source of Arias Syrah. We picked each block separately and fermented them with 25% stem inclusion. Aged for 24 months in all neutral, French oak, this year’s Syrah is very focused in style. It has green peppercorn, and spice accompanying the red and dark fruits. There are smokey/ meaty/bacony notes, slightly enhanced by the wildfires this year. We gave this wine extra time in the bottle in order to allow it to express its full range of flavors and aromas. It is a very structured wine with healthy natural acidity, a perfect accompaniment to grilled meats and hearty stews. For the Northern Rhone fans out there, it is very St. Joseph in style and character."

great balance and richness" says Matthieu. As good as the 2009 was, this wine has cool almost minty acidity lifting the complex and pure red fruits. A blend from St. Louans with mostly clay and limestone soils to give earthy well-structured wines, with 20% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit. The weight and balance of this wine are superb, with mineral and acid flavors coating the fruit and the finish is very long. This wine is enjoyable now, but will really benefit from two years of aging - with peak drinking from after five to ten years. 13% abv.

were shipped down the road to nearby Barolo and bottled under that name-the nine landowners who formed Produttori del Barbaresco were the first to bottle Barbaresco wine. In April we did a special tasting at our Wine Bar with Produttori that included all 9 single vineyard wines-the quality of the line was off the charts, but the wine that really stuck with us with this humbler Nebbiolo bottling. Unlike many of their neighbors, Produttori's Nebbiolo bottling is not a blend from outside the zone, but is used to declassify the fruit from younger Barbaresco vines. Nebbiolo may be the most demanding grape to farm and it's tricky to find entry-level price wines, but the Produttori Nebbiolo shows a mix of rose petal prettiness and bright Rainier cherry fruit that is pleasing and true-a staff favorite that we had to include in our best of the year.

We haven't had a sparkling wine as our "wine of the month" in many years but this was an easy call once Bubblehead introduced it to us. As winter works its way toward spring, this will harmonize beautifully with or without food (brunches to sushi, white meats to fruits and cheeses). Our staff loves this one!
The nose reveled in hints of pastry dough, citrusy notes of tangerine and límon and a touch of peach melba and sea air. The palate is an enchanting mélanage of more citrus , touches of honeysuckle and vanilla bean with a cleansing layer of minerality coursing throughout, like a glacial stream galloping seaward.

Balanced and delicious. Tannins are very velvety. Excellent. Drink or hold."
On the island of Sicily stands Mount Etna, one of the world's most unique locations for growing grapes. At nearly 11,000 feet, this is home to one of the most active volcanoes in Europe, known throughout history. It is believed that the ancient Greeks thought this locale to be the home of Vulcan, god of fire… and with every eruption he forged weapons for Mars, god of war. The last notable eruption was April 2012!
Mount Etna’s terrain is rugged, stunning, and one of the highest vineyards in Italy. The landscape features black soil juxtaposed with twisting vines and forests. Here, the vineyards of Tenuta Della Terre Nere are located at extremely high altitudes, ranging from 2100-2900 feet above sea level. The altitude makes for warm days and cold nights, making the wines incredibly fine and elegant.
The primary grape grown here is Nerello Mascalese, a grape indigenous to Sicily, creating wines that could be described as somewhere between the Nebbiolo grape of Barolo and the Pinot Noir grape of Burgundy, yet more approachable. The average age of the vines is 70-years-old.
The 2011 Tenuta Della Terre Etna Rosso is a blend of 98% Nerello Mascalese, and 2% Nerello Cappuccio. In the glass, the wine is a vibrant ruby red. The nose is sheer delight and soars with aromas of sweet tea and raspberry, followed by undercurrents of cranberry, lavender, and a hint of spice. This light-bodied wine (with 13.5% alcohol) tastes of raspberry tea, blackberries, a hint of orange peel, and finishes with soft tannins and pomegranate. This is a wine you will want at the ready, to enjoy by itself, or to have with white or red meat dishes. It is undeniably delicious and memorable.
