of many of our customers. Happily, we can now offer for your consideration Devaux's 2002 Cuvée D, which we believe is a most worthy successor to the dearly departed 1996. As we said last December, Devaux has come to be regarded not only as the Aube's (Champagne's southern sector) flagship firm, but also as one of the most dynamic, quality oriented Champagne houses in the entire region. The firm, which is a cooperative association of more than 900 growers, has the luxury to be very fussy about the grapes that go into this, their top Champagne. While 1996 and 2002 are unassailably classic Champagne vintages, they express themselves quite differently. The 1996s were known for their initial reticence whereas the 2002s have always been quite forthright and showy. So though six years younger, this 2002 is every bit as detailed and evolved as its predecessor and even displays a bit more broadness and creaminess on the palate. This straw-gold 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay opens with a panoply of orchard fruit, pâtisserie and wild honey aromas. A gentle perlage works to enhance this Brut's luxurious mouthfeel. Mouth-watering impressions of peaches, candied fruits and brioche lead the flavor attack while notions of nougat, red apples and baking spices rise up in its long, caressing finish. This is a singularly sumptuous, deftly crafted Champagne that should dazzle both the Champagne connoisseur and novice alike.

Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir) that are drawn from the winery’s second pressing and finished off with 90 days aging on the yeast. While this Brut lacks the autolytic flourishes found in high priced bubbles it compensates nicely with its alluring apple, pear, and citrus blossom nose. The palate is lithe and glossy and delivers a pleasing play of orchard and citrus fruits that are gently bridled with acidity. The dosage is on the sweeter end of the Brut range which gives this fizz broad appeal. It’s a great call for Sunday brunch or casual get-togethers.

the flagship 2009 The FMC has a beautifully defined, intoxicating bouquet with lemon curd, frangipane, almond and just a touch of nutmeg. The palate has a rounded, waxy texture with wonderful harmony and precision. There are subtle flavours of dried apricot, brioche, vanilla, a touch of honey (perhaps a little botrytis) and a hint of spice. Seductive, harmonious and very focussed, The FMC is a sublime expression of South African Chenin Blanc. Drink now-2020"
WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - " Ripe and lush, with delicious creamed pear, ginger, heather and fig kept honest by fresh acidity that's well-embedded on the toasty finish. This really stretches out in the glass too, with pear eau-de-vie and hazelnut oil notes lingering on the finish. Gorgeous. Drink now through 2014. 200 cases imported."
This iconic Chenin is a benchmark South African bottling, and what Ken Forrester considers to be the ultimate expression of the Chenin Blanc grape. The grapes are grown in Ken Forrester’s estate vineyards at the foot of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch.
The vineyards are farmed organically, and everything is done by hand. Grapes for the FMC are hand selected from a single block of low yielding Chenin bush vines planted in 1974. Each vine is pruned to 5 or 6 shoots, with 1 bunch per shoot. They are planted in Clovelly — a deep yellow sandy soil — on south-southwest-facing slopes.

and Fromenteau (Pinot Gris). The grapes are all planted together in a three-acre, biodynamically farmed vineyard and are all harvested and pressed together before vinification in barrel. This is a rolling multi-vintage blend consisting of two-thirds 2008 with the balance drawn from 2005-2007. Disgorged in January of this year, the wine is still tightly coiled but we were able to discern faint aromas of citrus blossoms, green melons and mint wafting up from our flutes. This cerebral, bone-dry Champagne showcases highly charged lime and tangerine taste impressions that are firmly supported with a stony undercarriage. Its lively acidity propels a kinetic finish that just won’t quit. A true rock-licker’s delight, this Champagne works true gustatory magic when paired with oysters or scallops.

16 acres of vines employing organic methods when ever possible. The “R” designation here stands as a tribute to
the brother’s father, Roger Fournay, who loved to blend Chardonnay with a touch of Pinot Noir. This Champagne
is sourced primarily from Les Barillées, an old-vines vineyard situated mid-slope on the northern side of Vertus in
the cru’s coeur de terroir. Cuvée R is vinified entirely in small oak casks (with partial malolactic), bottled and then
“rested” on its lees for four years prior to disgorgement. Despite its bone dry dosage, this Champagne is not at
all austere but pleases the palate with kaboodles of exotic guava and stone fruit essences that mesh perfectly with
the vanilla/ginger notes imparted by the oak. Underpinning everything is a smoky/stony minerality that fans out
and drives its long running back palate. This is handcrafted, multifaceted Champagne that offers tremendous flavor

is a vinous blend of 90% Pinot Noir and
10% Chardonnay from the domaine’s vineyards in the Montagne de Reims village of Rilly-la-Montagne and Villes-
Allerand. Proprietor Laurent Champs always avoids malolactic fermentation in order to retain structure and finesse.
To add a bit of roundness and spice, Laurent “raised” the base wines for this rose in large oak foudres for ten months
before bottling. Champagne critic Peter Leim of The Champagne Guide paints the finished picture well: “It’s creamy
and luscious, displaying pungent flavors of rhubarb, strawberry and cranberry along with underlying hints of sweet
herbs and peppery spice. Drinking superbly well now, it combines a serious, vinous character with sheer delicious
slurpability.” Note that our low Special Purchase Price is limited to stock on hand.
