MICHAEL DAVID 2007 ZINFANDEL
"7 DEADLY ZINS" LODI 750ml

Sourced from 7 different "old vine" vineyards in Lodi.
The wine possesses slightly more fruit as well as a more complete mid-section than last year. It is a very good effort showing plenty of oak in addition to abundant varietal character in its briery, cherry, raspberry, earthy personality. It is meant to be consumed over the next several years.

ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS 2007 ZINFANDEL
"SIN ZIN" ALEXANDER VALLEY 750ml

The 2006 edition shows classic Sin Zin and Alexander Valley characteristics. There are notes of boysenberry and wild strawberry along with some crushed black pepper. But it's also a touch darker and richer than some previous versions. We attribute that to the addition of a small amount of Zinfandel from the Dry Creek Valley to the blend before the wine is aged in French and American oak.

BIALE 2008 ZINFANDEL
"BLACK CHICKEN" NAPA VALLEY 750ml

Just like PB&J, or even stars & stripes, Robert Biale and Zinfandel go hand in hand. Few other producers of Zin can put out a stable of workhorse bottlings like Biale does. In the barn behind the chicken coops, Aldo Biale had some Zinfandel for the family, but he quickly learned that the wine was worth more than the grapes. So, “Black Chicken” was code for the wine, as not to alert the neighbors, but the secret could only be held for so long! Always their most popular bottling, the Black Chicken Zin was hand sorted in the field, and again at the winery to ensure only the best grapes would go into the wine. Keeping in line with its predecessors, the 2008 has a lovely, brilliant deep ruby color, silky tannins, bright blackberry, raspberry and juicy cherry fruit; textural round mouthfeel, toasted nuts, allspice, dried herb, and a hint of five-spice. Drinkable now, it will continue to improve over the next 3-4 years.

BIALE 2008 ZINFANDEL
"STAGECOACH" NAPA VALLEY 750ml

Located over 1200 feet above Oakville below Atlas Peak, the panoramic Biale Block looks out over the entire Napa Valley from Carneros to Calistoga. Planted to old Biale clones on the old fashioned St. George rootstock, this vineyard project that was started with Stagecoach managing partner Jan Krupp is the most serious work in the modern era to keep the legacy of Napa Zinfandel going strong. As we like to say, “They ain’t making any more old vines in Napa.” Steep rugged terrain, all day sunlight, and with great neighbors on Pritchard Hill above and Oakville below Stagecoach is an ideal site and now producing a Napa style Zinfandel of power and poise.

Blackberry, raspberry jam, minerals, dried brush, baking spices and toffee flavors are held firmly on the palate by elegant tannins and juicy acidity. The beautiful 2007 vintage of this mountain grown Zinfandel is one for drinking AND keeping.

This full-bodied vintage shows itself with rich black raspberry notes that round out in the mouth, accompanied by the scents of summer fruit jam bubbling on the stove. The grapes are a mix of those off their estate vineyards and grapes from other select Napa Valley low-yielding vineyards. Dry-farmed for over 20 years, their 4.5 acre estate block consists of mature thirty-seven year old vines which typically yield around 2.5 tons/acre of hillside fruit. Interspersed among the head-trained vines are a handful of Petite Sirah vines representing perhaps 5% of the total vines in this block. A traditional field companion to Zinfandel in pre-prohibition California vineyards, Petite Sirah contributes pepper, color, and tannin structure to the wine.

The Paraduxx winemaking team has been crafting a world-class red blend using Napa Valley Zinfandel since 1994. It offers the concentration and complexity that has made the Napa Valley famous, while highlighting classic Zinfandel elements of raspberry, strawberry jam, white pepper, cedar and spice. DOWNING FAMILY 2006 ZINFANDEL
"FLY BY NIGHT" OAKVILLE 750ml

The Pelissa and H&H vineyards in Oakville are planted with the White Barn Ranch clone of Zinfandel on St George rootstock. And both are California Certified Organically Farmed (CCOF), a very difficult and demanding cerfication to achieve and maintain.

It is well balanced and is sweet on the front palate and spicy on the back. Black currants, wild huckelberries, and a melting essence of dark chocolate emerge from this full-bodied wine that finishes with a note of vanilla and cracked pepper. Bright crisp fruit, remarkable balance, and Cabernet like depth and complexity define this Zinfandel as something special. The vintage was extremely small and only 986 cases were produced.

DRY CREEK 2007 ZINFANDEL
"HERITAGE VINES" SONOMA COUNTY 750mL

The 2007 Heritage Zinfandel is perhaps one of the more balanced and elegant vintages we have had in recent memory. This delicious wine combines fruit from the warm Dry Creek Valley and cool Russian River Valley appellations. Aromas of blueberry and raspberry are framed by notes of white pepper and chocolate. On the palate, an abundance of fresh berry fruit mingle with dollops of creamy oak. The tannins are round and smooth, giving this wine a long and satisfying finish.

HOWELL MOUNTAIN 750Ml

The 2006 Howell Mountain Zinfandel is dark ruby colored, with intriguing aromas of dried sage, white pepper, black fruits and wild brush; scents we find so true to the terroir of Howell Mountain. On the palate, deep flavors of plums, raspberry, persimmon, cola, earth and hints of cream and spice lead to a seamless mouthfeel and long, pleasing finish. This wine is lavishly textured with great fruit purity, soft tannins and a complexity that is so distinctive to this appellation.

ESCA 2005 ZINFANDEL
SONOMA COUNTY 750mL

We tried this wine and absolutely loved it! So we bought a stack of it, put it on our bythe- glass list at the winebar and it sold out in three days! If that’s not a rolling endorsement, we don’t know what is! Well, we got more, and supply should be good for a bit. The wine is made by the husband and wife team of Mario and Anna Monticelli. “Esca," Italian for allurement, is an expression of winemaking and living that they embrace. Mario has worked with Antinori and Philippe Melka, while Anna honed in on her skills at Cheval Blanc, Seavey, and Bryant Family. This is pure (100%) Zinfandel from some high-quality, yet not widely known vineyard in the Dry Creek area of Sonoma County. Aged for 18 months in a combination of new and used American and French oak, this crimson/purple-colored wine has enticing aromas of wild berry, violets, spice box and cedar. It is as intense and alluring as the wine is bright, yet shows rich raspberry, cherry, and blackberry notes, along with good acidity. The mouthfeel is very ripe and juicy, and retains soft and integrated tannins, while vanillin notes linger on the finish.
