ALTO SOL 06 SYRAH/CARMENERE
We get to or have to taste a lot of wines here at Hi-Time. Naturally! We are a wine shop, after all. The “get to” or “have to” part depends on the wine. Well, Alto Sol is definitely a "get to."
The nose starts with a waft of spicy briar and garrique segueing to fruit and more spice: roasted plum, sea salt, wild cherries and white pepper. The rounded palate of more cherries and plum with black cherry notes, brown spices and a touch of vanillin are uplifted by a nice brace of acidity— this definitely works well with food (red meats, tapas; rich, hearty fare—maybe barbecued veggies with a nice garlic aioli).The finish is weighty yet racy thanks to the acidity-- fruit dominates in the end notes but the spicy tones still have their say. It's a harmonious blend of grapes with the fruit characteristics of each complementing each; the spicy notes the Carménére adds really works with the fruit. This is a very good wine. At this price point, it's incredible.

The 2006 Predicador was aged for 19 months in seasoned oak. Dark ruby-colored, the nose has a slightly roasted character with aromas of cedar, mineral, scorched earth, violets, and blackberry. Round, ripe, and smooth- textured, it has enough underlying structure to evolve for 2-3 years. Nicely balanced and lengthy, it will drink well from 2012 to 2021

Well, the wine has arrived and we got a chance to taste it and it’s phenomenal! Ripe, plump and deep with superb purity and an unsurpassed depth of flavor, the wine tastes an awful lot like a de-classified Châteauneuf-du-Pape! The wine captures the essence of the vintage with complexity galore encompassing ripe dark plum, loganberry, elderberry and black cherry fruit. The wine’s bouquet of violets, spice and fruit compote is alone worth the price of admission. Hot stuff!

JULIENAS 2007 "CUVEE ESPECIALE" PASCAL GRANGER Located in Julienas, a village in the northern Beaujolais, this domain emphasizes old-vine fruit (45 to 90 years of age) in its wines. They are generally crisp and elegant wines with lively fruit character and silky texture.

KROHN 2003 LBV PORT 750
Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Ports are single year Ports that can rival Vintage Ports in flavor intenisity. Unlike Vintage Ports (which cask age less than two years) LBVs like this mature in cask for a period of four to six years and are then bottled. The result of this process is a Port which can be drunk earlier than a Vintage Port. Krohn's LBV Ports are neither fined nor filtered and may thus throw a sediment. This Krohn shows considerable "vintage character" displaying a deep ruby color and a deep nose of blackberries, plums, and maple syrup. This 03 is very well balanced and structured and is packed with tasty layers of chocolate, berries, and black cherries the persist through long mellow the finish..

Pungent, sweetish nose with medicinal tones. Very oily, initially a little sweet but developing a dry, rather austere style. Smooth and with just a pleasant touch of fire. Nice long finish with a bit of sweetness.

(From 40 year old vines). As I have advanced before, there is a very real arguement to be made that Ruchots is the best 1er in Morey and this example will only add credibility to that notion. Mild reduction suppresses the primacy of the nose relative to the dark berry infused flavors that are seemingly formed from extract of ripe pinot fruit. This is seductive, pure, harmonious and deep with outstanding underlying material and superb lenght. This knocks on the door of Grand Cru quality. (90-93)/2012
