August Taster's Advantage

Gold Selection Plan 1 $24.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 1 is for red wine lovers: two tasty selections from California or Around the World.

Ventisquero 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Grey Glacier, Maipo Valley, Chile - Ventisquero owns over 4,000 acres across top growing areas in Chile such as Casablanca, Maipo and Apalta. The “Grey” wines represent the best blocks in the best vineyards from Ventisquero’s  holdings. Winemaker Felipe Tosso is a star in Chile, but these higher tier wines benefit from the added assistance of consultant John Duval, famed as the man entrusted to make Penfolds Grange for over 20 years. This 2010 displays blackcurrant and brambly currant leaf character in a classic Cabernet vein mixed with blueberry, savory herbal spice and warm chocolaty oak. Reasonably priced by California standards, serve this red with grilled beef, lamb or pork.  Item #381544.

Line 39 2013 Pinot Noir, California - The Line 39 brand is a selection of varietals from the Central Coast and North Coast Appellations of California. The name refers to the 39th parallel which runs through the heart of California wine country.  Line 39 is one of five brands under Cecchetti Wine Company, which was launched by wine industry veteran Roy Cecchetti and his wife Rachael in 2007. Roy enlisted Bob Broman, who managed winemaking duties for him at Cecchetti Sebastiani Cellar. This experience allowed Bob to travel across California's vast wine regions nurturing grower relationships to ensure quality fruit sources. Bob's commitment to detail creates the backbone for blending stylistic wines that are approachable, consistent, a good value, and can be enjoyed any day of the week.

This is a great warm weather red-- who wants a big tannic monster during the dog days of August? The nose is brimming with soft red fruits, cherries and berries, a touch of smoke and a layer of earthy spice. The palate has soft, balanced tannins with more cherry and berry fruits, a touch of black pepper, baking spices and subtle earthiness, all harmoniously balanced. Great expression of Cal Pinot, easy-drinking with a solid structure.  This red may be served slightly chilled.  Item #275740.

Gold Selection Plan 2 $24.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 2 is for those who like it red.... and white! A solid two-pack selection.

Domaine Skouras 2011 Chardonnay “Almyra”, Greece - Domaine Skouras was established in 1986 by Dijon-trained winemaker George Skouras in the Nemea region of the Peloponnese.  George works with traditional Greek grape varieties such as Agiorgitiko (Saint George) and international varieties like Cabernet or Chardonnay. About two-thirds of the grapes for this wine were cold stainless steel fermented and one third was fermented in new French barriques.  This delightful Chardonnay displays lively peach and tropical fruit aromas on the nose.  In the mouth you find flavors of green apple, pineapple and lemony citrus notes.  The finish is long and dry.  Serve as an aperitif or with fish or chicken dishes (grilled chicken souvlaki with tzatziki comes to mind).

Peirano 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon “Heritage”, Lodi - Peirano Estate  was founded by Giacomo Peirano who immigrated from Genoa, Italy in 1879.  His dreams of striking it big in the gold fields didn’t materialize so he started a store in Lodi supplying miners and later planted one of the first vineyards in Lodi.  This 100% estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from 30-year-old vines.  The rich, dark color of this wine catches you from Read More...the first pour. It exhibits a rich deep burgundy hue with perfect clarity. The aromas are a compendium of dark fruit – blackberry, black raspberry, and currant – with elements of toasty oak, chocolate, dark roasted coffee bean, sage and spices. A sip fills the mouth with blackberry pie, with hints of rich, ripe black cherries, sweet oak and white pepper, while maintaining absolute dryness and firm, yet supple, tannins. This delicious Cabernet is ready to drink now and will continue to age gracefully for the next 6 to 8 years.  This wine was awarded a four star gold medal at the 2014 Orange County Fair.  Item #249820.

Platinum Selection Plan 1 $49.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 1 features two bold reds which will surely satisfy any wine lover. We include top wines from prestigious wine growing regions.

Costa de Oro 2012 Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County - The first vines were planted at the Costa De Oro Vineyard in 1989. Several years later  word got around of the vineyard’s potential, and it wasn’t long before the grapes were sold to revered Read More... producers such as Au Bon Climat, Hitching Post, and Foxen. While working at Au Bon Climat in the 1990s, Gary Burk crafted the first Costa De Oro wines. The wines quickly sold out, and became a cherished local “secret”. Well, the secret is now out, and Gary is still creating fantastic wine! The 2012 Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir utilizes all the time-proven techniques for quality wine; smaller fermenters, hand punch downs twice daily, and aging for 9 months in French oak. The result is a wine of excellent purity and elegance, with a vibrant nose of classic strawberry and cherry, with a hint of white pepper spice and loan. It is lively on the palate, with a lovely ruby color, flavors of cherry and strawberry, good texture, nicely placed acidity, and a freshness you don’t get from many Pinot Noirs at this price.  Serve with salmon, chicken or just by itself.  Item #212960.

Rock Garden 2012 Proprietary Red “Williams Cuvée, Napa - There is a spot where the rolling hills of Carneros gain elevation and meet with the rugged slopes of Napa Valley’s Mount Veeder.  It is in this area where we find the vineyard for this blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot.  The soils here are predominately clay, very thin and shallow, providing good drainage and poor fertility.  Since these vines struggle to retain moisture, this aids in keeping crop yields small, allowing the grapes to ripen and develop intense, vivid flavors.  This wine has a dark ruby/garnet color and the aromas are intense with herb, sweet tobacco, raspberry, currant, grilled meats and violets that give way to flavors of cocoa, black plum, black currants, wet minerals and a mélange of red fruits.  This is beautifully proportioned, as it has one foot in the new world and one foot in the old world.  It drinks well on its own, but pair it with some beef and you’ve got one heck of a meal!  Item #252510

Platinum Selection Plan 2 $49.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 2 is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We showcase two outstanding bottles, one white and one red from world-class vintners.

Greywacke 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand - Winemaker Kevin Judd Read More...was born in England, grew up in Australia and moved to New Zealand in 1983; soon after he became the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay and remained there for their first 25 vintages. In 2009, Kevin and his wife Kimberley unveiled their personal venture, Greywacke (pronounced "grey-wacky"), named after New Zealand's prolific bedrock. Once we tasted his wines we were instantly smitten-- these are wines of character, showcasing the terroir they come from, the high quality of New Zealand grapes and the knowledge and talent of the winemaker behind it all.  Decanter (London) gave this wine 90 points:  "Ripe honeydew melon aromas with herbal notes on the palate and a tangy, crisp finish. Fermentation in old French barriques has given a broad palate and mouthfeel, with a dry and quite austere finish.” Serve this with appetizers, fish, seafood and chicken.  Item#381863.

Champagne Selection No More Than $44.95

1 Bottle of Champagne
(tax & shipping not included)

The Champagne Selection is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We will showcase artisinal discoveries in French Champagne.

Bérêche Brut Réserve, Montagne de Reims - Raphael and Vincent Bérêche are rightfully included among the leading minds behind the quality revolution that is sweeping across Champagne today. Working with their father Jean-Pierre, the duo represents the fifth generation of their family to grow and make Champagne. Though the brothers produce a diverse range of Champagnes, they are all impeccably crafted and share a heightened sense of purity and place. The use of herbicides in the vineyards was eliminated immediately after Raphael joined the firm in 2004. He believes this is vital in maintaining the proper PH and acidity in the finished wines. In the cellar, Raphael blocks malolactic fermentation and keeps dosage levels as low as possible. This philosophy results in bracing, vinous Champagnes that are simultaneously deeply expressive of ripe fruit as well as the soils from which they spring. Another one of the family’s quality tenets is to restrict crop yields to about two-thirds of the regional average, a practice which results in a total annual production of just 7000 cases from their 24 acres (divided into 21 parcels) of vineyards. Unfortunately only a tiny slice of this modest production reaches the U.S. and our allocation is lamentably miniscule. It should be noted that if your palate fancies a softer style of Champagne, say along the lines of Veuve Clicquot, Bérêche’s offerings probably won’t be to your liking.

The Réserve is the least expensive (and most plentiful) Champagne in the family’s lineup and quite a showstopper in its own right. A fine example of the intense Bérêche style, this release is composed of roughly equal parts Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier from the 2011 vintage blended with 30% reserve wines from 2010 and 2009. Antonio Galloni comments: “Warm, rich and resonant, the NV Brut Réserve wraps around the palate with notable grace and class. Almonds, dried pears, rose petals, wild flowers and spices are some of the notes that blossom in the glass. Chalky notes support the expressive, burnished finish. This is a lovely entry-level offering that is given a bit more richness by the generosity of the 2011 vintage... Dosage is 7 grams per liter. 89 Points. (5/14)”. Item #325548.
