December Taster's Advantage

Gold Selection Plan 1 $24.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 1 is for red wine lovers: two tasty selections from California or Around the World.

Woodwork 2012 Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon - California Cabernet is a natural focus for us at Hi-Time, with our heritage in the Golden State, and a great grape to highlight during December, when family gatherings, office parties, end-of-the-year celebrations and lots more is going on.

For this, our wine of the month, we wanted something not only very good but very reasonably priced; Woodwork Cab, like Santa, delivers!

Central Coast fruit and a balanced use of American White Oak make for a good marriage. The nose is full of ripe red berry fruits, cherries and raspberries with a hint of strawberry, balanced by light spice and a touch of cocoa. Upon tasting, the sweet red berries are supported by subtle acidity and soft tannins. The finish shows a touch of cherry cola and black cherry as the flavors last and last. This is a crowd-pleaser, an easy-drinker and just plain tasty-and will fit just about any situation during this busy season. Item #271660

Le Bordeaux De Maucaillou 2011 Bordeaux Superieur - This is one serious bargain -- the juice is excellent and the price is, too! On the nose, mixed red fruits blend seamlessly with light spice, sandalwood, red plum reduction and fruit leather. The palate keeps the red fruit theme with raspberry and cherry cola in the foreground. This is forward and easy-drinking, light in acidity with gentle tannins. The dominant sweet fruits mesh with warm flavors of carob and light earthiness; the finish is relaxed with a focus on, again, sweet fruit. This is very tasty wine and a great way to introduce your friends to Bordeaux at a quite reasonable price (i.e. great for holiday gatherings, celebrations, etc.).

“MAUCAILLOU” means “mauvais cailloux”, the French for bad stone, as the term was understood by the farmers of the middle ages, given that this type of gravel plot was not suitable for growing cereal, the main source of livelihood at the time. It was later discovered that such gravel outcrops constituted an ideal terroir for highly expressive vineyards. Such were the beginnings of MAUCAILLOU, an exceptionally talented vineyard, given that since 1889 its wines have constantly been in the limelight throughout the world, during contests and “blind tastings” among professionals. Gold Selection Plan 2 $24.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 2 is for those who like it red.... and white! A solid two-pack selection.

Buitenverwachting 2013 Bayten Sauvignon Blanc Constantia Valley - #63 WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100 2014 (Smart Buys) WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Very solid, with a crunchy feel along the edges and pure white peach, flint and honeysuckle notes racing along. Drink now. 4,000 cases imported."

Long referred to as “Bayten” by locals, Buitenverwachting (meaning beyond expectations) is located on the east-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg on the Cape of Good Hope. Ocean breezes make this area one of South Africa’s coolest winegrowing areas, allowing for slow ripening, resulting in grapes that achieve full ripeness while retaining fresh acidity. This wine was aged on the lees for three months prior to bottling. Bayten offers a mélange of citrus and stone fruits with honeysuckle, jasmine and green notes on the nose. The palate reveals peaches, apricots, lemon rind and lemongrass with a nice balance of richness and refreshing crispness on the finish. Item# 382354

Platinum Selection Plan 1 $49.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 1 features two bold reds which will surely satisfy any wine lover. We include top wines from prestigious wine growing regions.

St. Supery 2012 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa valley - ROBERT PARKER 91+ POINTS - "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is also outstanding. Rich and dense with lots of crème de cassis and a hint of forest floor presented in a full-bodied, deep, lusty, opulent style, it can be enjoyed over the next decade."

St. Supéry Estate is a family-owned and sustainably-farmed winery. Now, you may have heard of Michel Rolland; he’s one of the most famous and talented winemakers in the world (just ask anybody in the wine industry). Now you may not have heard of St Supéry’s winemaker, Michael Scholz, but Michel Rolland says “Michael Scholz is on my list of great winemakers from around the world.” We’re not sure if you can get more of a compliment than that! Michael has been winemaker at St. Supéry from 1996-2001, and again since 2009. In that time, he helped to take these wines from strength to strength, as some of their Cabernets have earned up to 96 points! This year’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from their Rutherford and Dollarhide vineyards. During a recent trade tasting, this Cabernet practically stole the show! It offers up so much for its price that it’s simply stunning! The wine possesses a rich, vibrant purple color with a ruby red hue, while blackberry and ripe currant aromas combine with black pepper, anise, toasted oak and smoky roasted mocha. Flavors of black plum and cassis complement flavors of roasted coffee bean and licorice. This is a structured Cabernet Sauvignon with fine texture, length, flavor and style. Oh…and it just received 91+ points from Robert Parker! Item #264420

Bonanno 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - Next to our wine of the month, this is typically our 2nd most popular wine in December. With that in mind, we always take special care and look extra hard to be sure that the quality of this wine exceeds its pricepoint. Hey, if that’s what we want in the wines we take home, that’s what we should find for you… right? Bon Anno means “good year” and the Italian saying heralds the celebration of good times, and is a fortuitous play on Vintner Matthew Bonnano’s last name. But considering all the hype of the amazing 2012 vintage, there could not be a better time for Matthew to release this wine! Matthew sourced quality fruit from key vineyards in some of Napa Valley’s prime growing sub-appellations, like St. Helena, Oakville, and Stags Leap. He blended in small amounts of Merlot and Malbec to craft an even better wine, then aged the wine for 20 months in French oak barrels. When we got a “first glance” of this wine a few months ago, we just knew we found the best 'Under $20 Cab' of the year-- and carrying a Napa Valley designation, this wine is a righteous bargain! A deep ruby red color, this seductive wine shows classic Cabernet Sauvignon aromas of spice and sage followed by a mix of blueberries and blackberries with fresh raspberry notes. With a nice balance of acid and well-integrated tannins for structure, this wine is smooth, supple and sleek in the mouth. It is well balanced across the palate showcasing flavors of dark fruit, currants and hints of mineral and anise. Crafted to be enjoyed upon release, this wine will also stand the test of time for those who can wait! Item #204590

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 2 is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We showcase two outstanding bottles, one white and one red from world-class vintners.

Brundlmayer 2012 Kamptaler Terrassen Gruner - Austria's singular distinction-- as no other country in the world is a significant producer-- is the noble Grüner Veltliner. Famous for its almost preternatural ability to pair with food - especially with all of those no-no items that you're not supposed to pair with wine, like artichokes, bitter greens, asparagus, etc.-- there is simply nothing in world of wine like Grüner. This entry-level Grüner from the estate of Willi Bründlmayer, whom many consider to be Austria's best, shows us in spades everything for which Grüner is so beloved: a rich, yet crisp and firm collage of stone and citrus fruits - supported by hints of edamame, daikon, and sweet pea - that is supported by a core of complex, savory minerality, which informs you that this wine is from Terrassen or terraced vineyard sites. A great example of the genre, and an incredibly versatile wine at the table; get it while it lasts! Item #307462

Champagne Selection No More Than $44.95

1 Bottle of Champagne
(tax & shipping not included)

The Champagne Selection is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We will showcase artisinal discoveries in French Champagne.

Remi Leroy Brut, Champagne, France - This is a great under-the-radar Champagne for the serious Champagne drinker. Composed of 75% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, and 5% Meunier, all from the 2009 vintage, 90% of the cuvee was fermented in tanks and with the rest fermented in barrels all with full malolactic. This bottling was disgorged in October 2013 and was finished with minimal dosage of 3 grams per liter. The result is an exceedingly fresh, silky and pure Champagne offering focused orchard fruit flavors underscored with mouthwatering citrus and subtle minerality. Hipster bubbles without the hipster price.

Remy Leroy is young vigneron in the up and coming Cote des Bars region of Champagne's Aube district. Here Kimmeridian marl and Portlandian limestone replace the chalk subsoils of the Marne. In Meurville, where Remi Leroy grew up and founded his estate, the soils are especially poor and yields are naturally low. Remi works hard in the vineyard to take care of his soil and vines without any artificial input other than a little SO2. Each parcel is vinified separately and then assembled. Try this with oysters or smoked salmon.  Item #378225.
