March Taster's Advantage

Gold Selection Plan 1 $24.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 1 is for red wine lovers: two tasty selections from California or Around the World.

Guenoc 2012 Petite Sirah Lake County, California - Mixed dark berry and spice on the nose leads into smooth and perceptively sweet flavors on the entry. The full and soft mouth feel is intense with blueberry and vanilla for a powerful yet elegant wine. This Guenoc 2012 Lake County Petite Sirah stands up on its own or pairs well with smoky and spiced flavors, such as grilled steak or portobello mushrooms.

Wine Enthusiast 90 points - "Hearty, full-bodied, definitely rich and deeply colored. The chocolate and oak aromas lead to plenty of ripe blackberry and boysenberry flavors that come out on the palate and linger on the finish. It tastes big and tannic, yet the gushing fruit flavors balance everything out, and the overall impression is smooth and polished. Editors' Choice." Item #227480

Casa Contini 2009 Biferno Riserva, Italy - Located in the most obscure Italian region of all, Molise, Casa Contini is from the Eastern coast of Central Italy, in a place so remote, that in a country the size of California, only 1 in 100 Italians have been there. Casa Contini is a spectacular vineyard site (with a small house) owned for three generations by the Botter family. Luca is in the wine bottling business, and is one of the most successful in the country, but he also owns this quirky patch of land that produces amazing, varietally classic fruit. Moreover, he ages the wines in large oak barrels for several years, gently and patiently imparting soft tannic structure into the wines. The result? They are Riservas that are immensely pleasing, ready to drink immediately, and a remarkable value.

This Southern Italian blend is wonderfully smooth and balanced. Made from two of our favorite “underrated” varietals, Montepulciano and Aglianico, Casa Contini’s Biferno Riserva is atypical of many of its ungainly Southern counterparts, whose alcohol tends to be too hot, and fruits overripe. Rather, it is like a Northern Italian in its cool smoothness, with a smoky blackberry, chestnut, and peppery-sweet aroma that delights the senses. With further aeration, this wine opens up even more, revealing dark and ripe, red plums, dark spices, Italian hillside (scrub brush-- Italian 'garrique'), sweet tobacco and cola berry. Perhaps even better than the interplay between sweet fruits, spices and earthiness in the mouth-- which is heavenly-- is the impeccable balance. The fruit is perfectly ripe, not overly so, and matched by firm-yet-silky tannins and light acidity. Mid-palate red and black plums and strawberry tea flavors lead to a lengthy, tasty finish. Enjoy with pot roast, chicken and rice, cheeses and charcuterie, light game, grilled sausages. Bellissimo! Item #301705

Gold Selection Plan 2 $24.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 2 is for those who like it red.... and white! A solid two-pack selection.

Line 39 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast, California - “The 39th parallel runs through the heart of California wine country and is home to Line 39. Here we craft wines expressive of their dynamic region. The Central Coast of California is the perfect growing region for my style of Pinot Noir. Rich flavors of berries and cherries with soft tannins. Discover the Central Coast like I did. Salut!" - Bob Broman, winemaker

The 2012 Line 39 Pinot Noir begins with pleasant aromas of strawberry, raspberry, earth and a hint of rhubarb. This medium-bodied wine is really easy to drink and smooth with similar flavors to the nose plus a nice layer of spice. It's a bit rustic (or maybe just rough around the edges), but that helps give the wine some nice character versus being artificially smooth. The medium-long finish is lightly spicy and strawberry notes linger pleasantly in the mouth. Proof you don't have to spend a lot on your Pinot Noir to get the real thing! Item #275832

Sevilen 2012 Majestik White, Turkey - We think the most fun about wine is to discover something that is totally under the radar and, of course, absolutely delicious. Our “other imports” wine buyers do a fabulous job discovering these unknown treasures. This delightful white from the Aegean region of Western Turkey is composed of Sauvignon Blanc and Sultaniye, an indigenous grape. The color is pale and the nose has lovely fresh fruit aromas.  On the palate this aromatic and medium to full-bodied white displays tropical fruit flavors with a hint of grapefruit on the dry finish. Great as an aperitif this also goes well with pan-fried or grilled fish, chicken kebabs and pasta with white sauce. We hope you give this unusual and reasonably priced white a chance. You won’t be disappointed. Item #372440.

Platinum Selection Plan 1 $49.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 1 features two bold reds which will surely satisfy any wine lover. We include top wines from prestigious wine growing regions.

Cotes de Rhone 2013 Font du Loup, France - Chateau Font du Loup can be translated into “Fountain of the Wolf.” The name according to the Southern Rhone Valley local folk lore dates back to a time when wolves drank from the various springs located on the property. Chateau Font du Loup came into being when it was purchased by the Melia family in 1942. However, it took until 1979 before the first estate bottled wines were produced and sold. Chateau Font du Loup owns 19.5 hectares of vines in Chateauneuf du Pape. This includes 4 hectares of old vine Grenache that were purchased in 1992. The vineyards are organically farmed, one hectare is devoted to the production of white wine while the remaining 18.5 hectares are used for planting grapes suited for red Chateauneuf du Pape wine.

The 2013 Cotes du Rhone from Font du Loup is medium ruby in color. Red and black fruits greet the nose along with lavender floral notes. On the palate, the wine is dry, medium-bodied and fresh with silky smooth tannins. Black cherry liqueur, ripe black plum and black raspberry flavors linger in this satisfying Southern Rhone blend, which exhibits considerable elegance and finesse. Item #334199

Petrolo 2011 Torrione, Italy - The Petrolo Estate is run by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family arrived at its 4th generation and focuses its activity in the production of Fine Wines and Organic extra virgin Olive Oil. Petrolo extends over 272 hectares between 250 and 400 meters above sea level, in an area known since early '800 for its prestigious wines.

Winemaking at Petrolo, since the second half of the 80's has been aiming to produce wines with character, connected to our territory thanks to vines of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Faithful to this project the selection of grapes is today increasingly important, convincing our plants to produce low yields and a careful and caring work in the cellar want to sustain and improve nature's result, without ruining it. In the 50's there were 1500 plants per hectare for a production of 3500 hectoliters of wine while today with 5500 plants per hectare, production has been reduced to little less than 700 hectoliters. An accurate selection that wants to add quality and beauty to what is already by nature, extremely precious.

WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2011 Torrione is 85% Sangiovese tweaked with small parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Despite those added elements, what really comes through here is the purity of Sangiovese with its bright aromas of red cherry, pressed violets and dark earth. There-s a fresh point of acidity that really brings home those varietal characteristics. It shows balance, elegance and firmness. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Grilled herb and sweet spice aromas give way to plum and black cherry flavors in this rich, dense red. Balanced in a youthful way, but needs time for the tannins to resolve. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2016 through 2022. 657 cases imported." Item #302441

Platinum Selection Plan 2 $49.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 2 is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We showcase two outstanding bottles, one white and one red from world-class vintners.

Palacios 2013 Camins del Priorat, Spain - The son of the owners of Rioja's Palacios Remondo, Alvaro Palacios spent his early 20s working and studying winemaking outside of Spain. His experience abroad - particularly in Bordeaux - instilled in him a deep passion for great wines and led him to return to Spain. With the ambition to make wines that could be world-class. To achieve this dream, Palacios was drawn to the historic hillsides of slate soil and its traditional grape varieties of Garnacha and Carinena. Now widely considered to be among the more important new Spanish wineries in a generation, Alvaro Palacios embodies the spirit of "The New Spain."

Alvaro's Camins is made half from local variety Samsó (a synonym for Carinena), then 40% Garnacha and 10% shared between Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The wine has classic Priorat weight, with velvety raspberry fruit and hints of spice and vanillin; the naturally ripe exuberance inherent in this region has been tamed by this relatively mild vintage and the result is pleasingly approachable in youth. Item #380775

Calanchi de Vaiano 2012 Chardonnay, Italy - In 1985, Paolo and Noemia d’Amico founded a winery based in their mutual life experiences of elegance and luxury. Paolo’s family kept an extensive wine collection that influenced him from a young age. Noemia’s Portuguese family brought their historical wine tradition to Brazil when they immigrated to Rio de Janeiro. The pair took their shared passion for wine and formed Paolo e Neomia D’Amico, a name that describes the deep connection that founded their winery.

D’Amico wines are heavily influenced by the ancient volcanic landscape of Viano, from the soil to the cellars, which are made out of the local volcanic Tufo stone. D’Amico wines have received accolades from VinItaly, James Suckling, Robert Parker, and in Bebienda Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, Gosto, and more.

In the glass, Calanchi di Vaiano is a luminous pale yellow with green tinges. With elegant aromas that combine citrus fruit, white pepper and apricot, on the palate this Chardonnay is slightly mineral and noticeably persistent. It is a lovely wine, well suited as an aperitif, or served with pasta and rice dishes with mild sauces, white meat, and fish. Item #302444

Champagne Selection No More Than $44.95

1 Bottle of Champagne
(tax & shipping not included)

The Champagne Selection is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We will showcase artisinal discoveries in French Champagne.

Nicolas Maillart Brut 1er Cru Platine Champagne, France - The Maillart family has been growing vines in the western portion of the Montagne de Reims since at least 1753.  Today the house is in the hands of Michel’s son Nicolas (pictured), who took over in 2003.   Maillart places a great deal of emphasis on environmentally-responsible viticulture, but he refuses to call himself organic, because he doesn’t believe that strictly organic viticulture necessarily results in less pollution (citing the use of copper as an example). He prefers the term sustainable agriculture, and since taking over he has eliminated chemical pesticides and weedkillers. Maillart owns 21 acres in the villages of Ecueil, Villers-Allerand and Bouzy, as well as small parcels in Sermiers and Sacy; also, he works ten additional 24 acres of vines in Bouzy and Villers-Allerand that belong to other members of the family, which is the sole reason that he’s registered as a négociant and not an estate producer (recoltant manipulant) he’s purchasing grapes that he actually grew himself. Maillart’s wines are bold and full of flavor, with an expressive character and harmonious depth.   Nicolas Maillart has renamed the estate’s non-vintage brut as Platine, blended from three different years and made of 80 percent Pinot Noir and 20 percent Chardonnay.

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - "An elegant, aperitif-style Champagne that offers layers of flavor, with notes of Gala apple, tangerine, smoke, biscuit, cumin, honey, lime zest and salted butter. Texturally refined, with a bright juiciness to the acidity. Drink now through 2018. 200 cases imported."
