Merino 2012 Syrah, Chile - A deep and brilliant dark purple introduces a rich nose of ripe blackberries and raspberries. The main personality is ruled by a floral quality on top of a meaty background. Finishes with minerality along with spicy violets and wild berries. Recommended pairings include lamb or herb-based sauces.

WINE & SPIRITS 91 POINTS - "Imagine a blender filled with fresh-picked blackberries. This smells and tastes like those berries after they've been pureed, as vibrant as it is soft and juicy. Added to that gentle, smooth feel, there's a hint of meatiness giving the wine extra power and complexity."

Kermit Lynch 2013 Cote Rhone Cypress, Rhone, France - Louis Barruol is an indefatigable force in the Rhône. He is the fourteenth generation in his family to be making wine in this sixteenth-century domaine in Gigondas. On what was once the site of a Roman villa, Louis’ cellars show spectacular remains of old, Roman vinification vats carved into the limestone. Here, Louis works with different grape varietals from the Rhône, vinifying each parcel separately. He has recently taken to acting as a micro-négociant, working closely with top growers in the northern part of the region who still work with la vieille sérine, an ancient version of Syrah. Producing only a few precious barrels of each cuvée, Louis is helping to save the authenticity and the identity of many great old Côte Rôtie parcels, and now those of Hermitage and Crozes, by keeping them out of the hands of the large, corporate négociants in the area. Together, he and Kermit blend their Cypress Cuvée (Rouge) and Sunflower Cuvée (Blanc) from his own vineyards, and the other Northern Rhône wines from a selection of Louis’ purchases. Louis selects the best parcels he can find, and then Kermit shows up and either has a cuvée bottled unfiltered, or he blends to find the assemblage that satisfies his esthetic criteria.

On the nose the wine shows violet, rose petal, oak, smoke, mushroom, game, toast, tar, dust, dark fruit, vanilla, tobacco, red fruit, spice box, and cedar. Lots of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, licorice, anise, vanilla, musk, black currant, blackberry, dust, leather, currant, and blueberry on the palate. Item #322780

Camila 2013 Malbec, Argentina - The history of Nieto Senetiner Winery dates back to 1888, when Italian immigrants founded it and grew the first vineyards in Vistalba, Luján de Cuyo, province of Mendoza. Over the first decades of the last century, the winery was run by several families who succeeded in passing on the secret of fine winemaking and the love for their land.

In 1969, it was acquired by the families Nieto and Senetiner, who expanded the facilities, signalling the beginning of a new stage of growth and brand development. In 1998, it became part of the Grupo de Negocios de Molinos Río de la Plata. Loyal to their wines' quality and the importance of terroir, Nieto Senetiner has 400 hectares of vineyards in three Estates (Fincas), all situated in the Lujan de Cuyo area, but in different valleys presenting different features. In these Estates, high quality grapes are produced, resulting in exceptional wines.

This is a great value play wine-- don't let the reasonable price fool you; it drinks way above its price niveau. We're suckers for Mendoza Malbecs and this one saw us coming and reeled us in. The perfumed nose of dark blue and red fruits mixed with midnight florals and piquant spices with maybe a touch of vanilla chai, caught us first. Sensual, rich, enveloping. And on the lips, heaven! Sweet plum and red berry fruits paired with a voluptuous mouthfeel lead to mid-palate tones of spice, cedar and a touch of burley tobacco. Excellent acidity and forward tannins keep the structure firm and focused. The finish is elongated with fruits and spices echoing around the mouth for minutes and minutes. Item #381607

2010 Domaine Fl Le Chenin Anjou Blanc, Lorie, France - These Chenin Blanc grapes are grown in vineyards with south oriented, carboniferous soils. The average age of the vines is 25 years old. All the grapes are hand harvested after 3 selection passes, amounting to a yield of 25 hl/ha. The juice is fermented at low temperature with indigenous yeasts. The wine does not go through malo-lactic fermentation, but is aged 10 months on its lees after alcoholic fermentation.

Delectus 2011 Red “Argentum” Knights Valley, California - Argentum is latin for "silver", and Delectus' Argentum bottling is a blend of various barrels taken from their vineyard designated wines. This harmonious and sumptuous wine is meant for casual occasions. The components of the 2011 vintage are 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, 6% Petite Sirah, and 4% Syrah. As in life, being the runner-up and winning silver can set the stage for great surprises to come!

The nose is abundant with dark, mouth-watering fruits like Bing cherry and blackberry. A hint of rose hips and pomegranate peel soon follow. It is rounded out with spicy notes of bay leaf, herbs, and camphor. The mouth is fruit forward, and the wine grips the roof of your mouth with fleshy tannins that lingers to a medium-long finish. The flavors of cedar, baking chocolate, and laurel keep you coming back for more. Item #215600

Teso de la Monja 2012 Almirez, Spain - The Eguren family fell in love with this land more than 15 years ago, seduced by its pre-phylloxera vines, deep roots vineyards meticulously chose to translate the minerality of the soils in powerful and elegant reds. And their love for Toro remains unchanged. In this second stage of the Marcos and Miguel Eguren presence in DO Toro after Numanthia-Termes project, Teso La Monja was born with a different approach: fresher, north facing loamy soils with gravel on the surface, which offer longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines which transmit the maximum potential of soils’ minerality. Toro’s prephiloxeric vineyards, own rooted ‘Vitis vinifera’ and autochthonous, aged up to 130 years, and old vineyards with an average age of 50 years old, form a terroir that gives birth to unique wines.

ROBERT PARKER 93 POINTS - "The 2012 Almirez (a 1,000-case cuvée of 100% Tinta de Toro) was aged 14 months in French oak. This sensational wine comes from vines planted between 1949 and 1999. Yields were a conservative 1.8 tons of fruit per acre. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas of camphor, ground pepper, blackberries and cassis. This full-bodied, Northern Rhône Valley-like Spanish red exhibits meaty/lard notes, terrific density and purity, and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds. It should drink nicely for a decade or more." Item #380781

Ixsir 2010 Grand Reserve Rouge, Lebanon - Ixsir's 2010 Grand Réserve Red is composed of 61% Syrah and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lebanon's Batroun District. The winery's name derives from the Arabic word Al-Iksir, meaning Elixir: the purest form of all substances, a secret potion that grants eternal youth and love. Ixsir winery was established by a group of friends who share the desire of creating the finest wines Lebanon (which has a winemaking history dating back thousands of years) has to offer.  Their winemaking consultant is Hubert de Boüard of Château Angélus. The grapes are selected from the best terroirs throughout Lebanon, sponsoring sustainable development within growers’ communities. The winery is situated beneath an historic manor house in Basbina. Its breathtaking blending of sleek modern lines with ancient heritage earned it acclaim as one of CNN’s greenest buildings of 2011. The Grande Réserve wines are powerful, rich and barrel aged. The 2010 Grand Réserve has a dark brambly red color.  On the nose you find aromas of strawberries, oak and cassis. In the mouth there are blackberry and cassis flavors and just a hint of green pepper.  Ripe, soft tannins lend complexity to the long, silky finish.  This red blend will pair perfectly with roasted or grilled beef or lamb.  Item #362335.

The Terraces 2013 Chenin Blanc, Clarksburg, California - When you think of Napa Valley producers, your mind might logically think of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay… and with good reason. But in December, The Terraces Winery (located in the Rutherford district of Napa Valley) crafted a Riesling so extraordinary that it would be wrong not to include it in our list of top white wines of the year. Now they have come out with a Chenin Blanc that tastes unlike anything we’ve had out of California in several years; so we have to ask ourselves... how do they do it?!?!? Winemaker Timm Crull loves to drink clean, vibrant white wines from France. So he doesn’t just make a wine because the grapes are available; he makes delicious wine because QUALITY grapes are available, and he knows what to do with them! Sourced from the cool region of Clarksburg (east of Napa), the wine does not go through secondary fermentation in order to retain fresh acidity and sees only 5 months in neutral barrels to promote texture. Clear straw/gold in color, this is highly aromatic with pear, citrus rind, apple and light spice notes, all of which follow through to the palate. Bright, easy-drinking, and refreshing, this is our new “go-to” white on those warm spring and summer days!

The Terraces Clarksburg Chenin Blanc is a blend of 85% Chenin Blanc and 15% Riesling. The grapes were destemmed with 24 hour skin contact, pressed in basket press and then moved to the fermentation tank at 49F to just above 0 Brix without any malolactic conversion. The wine was aged for five months in neutral French Oak barrels. The resulting wine shows pleasant semi-sweetness with balanced acidity. The palate is bright and lush with lengthy flavors of pear and stone fruit that carry through to the long, clean finish. Item #268770

Champagne Selection No More Than $44.95

Robert Moncuit Brut Blanc de Blanc, Champagne, France - This organically farmed family-run estate is situated in the famed Cote des Blancs Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger which also hone to Salon and Krug’s Clos du Mesnil Champagnes.  The firm has a five generation history with Alex Moncuit first planting grapes back in 1889. Today the house, which specializes exclusively in Chardonnay based Champagnes (i.e. Blanc de Blancs), has 20 acres of vines all situated in Le Mesnil.  The family tends their plots without the use of pesticides and herbicides and all the fruit is hand-harvested and sorted. Each parcel isvinified separately to optimize the outcome of blending. All of the wines are fermented and raised in tank, the goal being contact with the lees. The malos happen naturally, they don't filter or chapitalize. The base wine for this Brut is 2010 with about 20% reserve from 2009. Approximately 30% of the cuvée is aged in oak. 

John Gilman inked this praise last summer in his View From the Cellar newletter:  “-"The new release of Pierre Moncuit’s non-vintage Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs (all from Mesnil fruit) is still a pretty young wine, but it has very good depth and plenty of nascent complexity and will really blossom nicely with a year or two in the bottle. The youthfully fine bouquet offers up scents of pear, delicious apple, incipient notes of pastry cream, chalky minerality, spring flowers and a delicate touch of lemon zest in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and intensely flavored, with lovely, frothy mousse, fine focus and balance, crisp, beautifully-integrated acids, nascent complexity and fine length and grip on the elegant and still tightly-knit finish. This is not a bad drink today by any means, but it will really open up with another twelve to eighteen months of further bottle age. A fine bottle.  91+ Points" Item #325773
