August Taster's Advantage

Gold Selection Plan 1 $24.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 1 is for red wine lovers: two tasty selections from California or Around the World.

Cune Vina Real 2012 Crianza, Spain - La Rioja is blessed with the perfect conditions for excellent vineyards. Its soil and climate are favorable for growing vitis vinifera, and its wine culture runs deep and wide. There are good reasons why this land enjoys international recognition for its outstanding wines. Cune, with its three wineries and the many international prizes earned by its wines, has also contributed to making Rioja the global benchmark it is today.

Cune`s Viña Real winery is located on top of the Cerro de la Mesa, in Rioja Alavesa, an area celebrated for its fruit-forward wines, a land with a soil that supports the best native red wine grape varieties and that enjoys an optimum mesoclimate. Most vines here grow from the highlands of the Sierra de Cantabria down to the Ebro River on southern-facing slopes the calcareous sediment of the hills makes the soil ideal. Rioja Alavesa was one of Spain`s pioneering regions in the barrel-aging of wines, and Viña Real was one of the first to make crianza wines in this area.

Cune has been a long time staff and customer favorite from Rioja. Over the years we have had the privilege of tasting their Gran Reservas as far back as the 50’s. Our reactions are always the same, we ooh and awe, treasuring every sip.

This 2012 has a nice bright cherry color with a clean and open nose displaying red fruits and a spicy touch, coming through as quite a traditional nose and a polished palate with good acidity as they aim for freshness and drinkability. This Crianza represents superb value for money. Drink now-2020." Item #381222

McManis 2013 Zinfandel, California - Orange County Fair 2015 Gold Medal Winner - The grapes for our 2013 Zinfandel were harvested between Oct. 8th and 10th, with an average Brix of 23.7. After 7-9 days of stainless steel fermentation on the skins, the must was pressed and the wine finished fermentation. The wine was then aged, on average, for 4-6 months with a combination of new and used, French and American Oak.

Our 2013 Lodi Zinfandel shows juicy bright red fruits with soft supple tannins. With aromas of ripe red currants and fresh Strawberries, the wine is medium dark purple. This wine shows many characteristics of other classic Lodi Zinfandels. Item #241690

Gold Selection Plan 2 $24.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 2 is for those who like it red.... and white! A solid two-pack selection.

La Matelote 2012 Duput de Lome Mont Caume, France - Blending in stainless steel tanks before aging for 10 months in fourdre casks before bottling. Light or no filtration depending on vintage. No fining. Deep blue red color. We find blackberries and the typical regional garigue (sage and lavender) on the nose. Intense black fruit provide weight and structure, balanced with freshness from the grapes grown on Northern exposure. We find fine tannins on the lingering finish. A great food wine! Item #333604

Cune 2014 Monopole, Spain - Made from Viura grapes, this wine exhibits citrus and floral aromas. Great mouth-feel enhanced by citrus and mango flavors with a long, fresh finish. The balanced acidity coupled with its other characteristics makes this an ideal sipper as well as a perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of dishes.

All grapes come from the 'Rioja Alta' subzone, where higher altitudes and Atlantic influences make for a moderate climate which is ideal for producing wines of elegance and finesse. Soils are composed of iron-rich clay and limestone. This wine is aged in tank and bottled in January to preserve freshness and fruit.

La Rioja is blessed with the perfect conditions for excellent vineyards. Item #380671

Platinum Selection Plan 1 $49.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 1 features two bold reds which will surely satisfy any wine lover. We include top wines from prestigious wine growing regions.

Langmeil 2010 “The Blacksmith” Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia - The land on which Langmeil Winery now stands was purchased by a 36 year old German blacksmith, Christian Auricht. He and his family arrived in South Australia in 1838 after emigrating from eastern-central Europe (Silesia) to escape religious persecution.

Christian planted his first acre of vines on the estate. The variety was Shiraz and the vines are still producing fruit today. Auricht's old vineyard is the source of Langmeil Winery's single vineyard Shiraz. This rare wine commemorates the pioneering spirit of the first settlers and, because of their willingness to endure so much hardship for the right to keep their faith, it has been named The Freedom 1843 Shiraz. The vineyard is believed to be one of the oldest known surviving Shiraz vineyards in the world.

The property was purchased in 1996 by three local mates whose families have lived in the Barossa Valley for several generations: Richard Lindner, Carl Lindner and Chris Bitter. They restored the remaining old buildings and the village well and beautified the gardens. As a tribute to the early pioneers, the new owners refurbished the old winery and named it Langmeil, after the original village.

WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "Deep garnet with a purple rim, the 2010 Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon opens with wonderfully intense, slowly evolving notes of creme de cassis, dried plums and menthol over hints of cigar boxes, cinnamon stick, dried herbs and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied with mouth-filling black fruit preserves and baking spice flavors, it has a medium level of fine-grained tannins, refreshing acid and a finish with very good length. Drink it now to 2019+."

La Dauphine 2010 Fromsac, France - The 40 hectare vineyard of Chateau de La Dauphine is located in the Fronsac appellation. The terroir is clay and limestone soils. The vineyards are planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is planted to a vine density of 6,300 vines per hectare. On average the vines are 33 years of age.

Chateau de La Dauphine is a top value Bordeaux wine and one of the best wines from Fronsac Canon Fronsac. It’s filled with lusty, ripe, dark, jammy fruit, soft textures and good concentration. Plus, the wine of Chateau La Dauphine drinks well young.

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Features a toasty frame, lead by notes of mocha and ganache. Sleek steeped currant and blackberry fruit sit at the core, with a vibrant graphite edge driving the finish. Solid. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2022. 6,700 cases made." –JM Item #300076

Platinum Selection Plan 2 $49.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 2 is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We showcase two outstanding bottles, one white and one red from world-class vintners.

Zafeirakis 2008 Limniona Red, Greece - The Zafeirakis family has grown wine grapes in the region of Tyrnavos (Thessalia, in the east of central mainland Greece) for more than 100 years.  Fourth generation winegrower Christos Zafeirakis studied enology in Athens and then earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Milan, Italy.  He also worked at wineries in Piedmont, Alto Adige and Tuscany to gain further experience.  After his return to Greece he started farming organically and established a winery.

In her book, Wine Grapes, Jancis Robinson credits Christos with reviving the red variety Limniona (not the same as Limnio) which was nearly extinct.  Robinson says:  “Zafeirakis’ varietal Limniona, from vines densely planted in 2005 at 100 meters above sea level, is well coloured and spicy, medium-bodied, fresh, fragrant and silky, with good ageing potential.”  We tried and loved the 2008 a couple of years ago and our customers loved it also.  We recently tasted this intriguing red again and found that with a year or two of additional bottle age it is really showing well.  On the nose you find aromas of black cherry, plum and a fine herbs; in the mouth it is lush and elegant, displaying blue and red fruit flavors with soft tannins and good acidity on the finish.  Serve this light-on-its-feet, savory red with grilled pork or chicken or pasta with a meaty red sauce. Item #362310

Schloss Gobelsburg 2013 Gruner Veltliner, Austria - Schloss Gobelsburg has a winemaking history dating back to the 12 century.  Today it is a joint project of Michi Moosbrugger and Willi Brundlmayer.  They are succeeding in making beautiful, balanced wines which reflect their terroir.  Importer Terry Theise describes the flavors of the single vineyard 2013 Steinsetz as “exotic, something between verbena and spearmint and quince. A pointed thrust followed by a big juicy robe of fruit, that billows in a foamy wave as it picks up oxygen, getting all barleyed and stock-y, and then suddenly minty and green again; ripe and grainy and vibrating with energy.”  The Wine Spectator gave this delicious dry white 91 points:  “Rich and well-proportioned, with concentrated dried pear, apple tart and ruby grapefruit flavors. White pepper and lentil notes add to the complexity, echoing on the finish. Drink now through 2020. –KM”.  Grüner Veltliner is very popular with sommeliers as it will accompany so many dishes. Serve this crisp wine with fish, chicken, weiner schnitzel and vegetarian dishes.

WINE SPECTATOR - 91 POINTS - Rich and well-proportioned, with concentrated dried pear, apple tart and ruby grapefruit flavors. White pepper and lentil notes add to the complexity, echoing on the finish. Drink now through 2020. –KM Item #362640.

Champagne Selection No More Than $44.95

1 Bottle of Champagne
(tax & shipping not included)

The Champagne Selection is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We will showcase artisinal discoveries in French Champagne.

Eric Rodez Brut Cuvee Crayeres, Champagne, France - A 55/45 mix of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay all from the family's holdings in Ambonnay. Half the blend is 2007 with the rest drawn from older years. One-quarter of the wine was fermented in oak which contributes a regal mouthfeel & a bit more spice. This Crayeres really impresses with its harmonious play of Golden Delicious apple, spiced pear, & toast flavors. Item #352329

From importer Charles Neal "Rodez is an RM that uses fruit from only his vines in the grand cru commune Ambonnay. Rodez used to blend wines at Krug, and their style of blending multiple vintages together has certainly influenced his work. What you get with Rodez is normally an equal blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, aging in both tank and oak, a wide variety of reserve wines and three or four years of lees aging. Think a hypothetical blend of Krug and Egly-Ouriet and you begin to get the idea. Now look at the value prices of these champagnes and ask yourself: "Why in the world would I not be buying these?"
