February Taster's Advantage

Gold Selection Plan 1 $24.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 1 is for red wine lovers: two tasty selections from California or Around the World.

Mas Grand Piagniol 2012 Costieres de Nimes Rouge, France - Cyril Marès has several vintages under his belt now and father Roger has happily handed over title to the domaine . The wines always show exceptional aromatic appeal, supple texture and uncannily intelligent balance between fruit and oak. We never seem to buy enough of them, mainly because they have little to sell. Wines like these offer incontrovertible proof that not much money can buy you a lot of love. In a market now brimming with Nimois wines, these remain at the top of the pile.

(50% Syrah, 50% Grenache) The great ones do their best work in the lesser vintages, as proved by Cyril in years like 2008 and 2002. We challenge you to find a wine that better combines aromatic flair, suave texture and sheerly delicious spicy Rhône fruit at such a silly price. Item #334188

Vina Cumbrero 2010 Crianza, Italy - Bodegas Montecillo was founded in 1874 in Spain's Rioja Alta region. The winery was one of the first to adapt Bordeaux winemaking techniques to Spanish grapes, earning the reputation and prestige that it still enjoys today. Winemaker Maria Martinez Sierra has continued the unique quality and traditions of the winery, using 100% Tempranillo grapes aged in French oak barrels. Wine Spectator gave this wine the special designation of Best Value and ranked this wine #62 in its' top 100 wines of 2014. Delicious with red fruit, florals, tobacco and baking spice. It is bright, fruit forward and easy to drink.

#62 ON WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100 OF 2014
WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "The polished texture carries crisp flavors of tart cherry, fresh herb, anise and mineral, supported by light, firm tannins and lively acidity. Graceful, with balanced fruity and savory notes that give way to a spicy, floral finish. Drink now through 2022. 103,700 cases made. Special Designation: Best Value. Item #382929

Gold Selection Plan 2 $24.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Gold Selection Plan 2 is for those who like it red.... and white! A solid two-pack selection.

La Martinette 2010 Bordeaux, France - Situated on the left bank of the river Dordogne in the Bordeaux appellation, this domain is planted only with Merlot vines. Jacques Lurton is bringing a long family tradition and personal skills gained from all over the world to this grape variety offering a refreshing, modern red style, very supple and easy drinking.

This Merlot based wine is medium ruby in color. On the nose, red fruit is augmented by violets, herbs and fresh-tilled earth. On the palate, fresh Bing cherries predominate with enough acidity to provide lift. The smooth, supple tannins make this an easy drinking wine to be enjoyed now. It is the ideal accompaniment to bring pleasure to your everyday meals. Item #333827

Jack Hammer 2012 Chardonnay, Central Coast - The grapes were hand harvested from September through October from various vineyards in the Northern part of Santa Lucia Highlands, Edna Valley and Santa Maria with very cool climate and vintage provided high natural acidity. Fermented in 100% stainless steel tank with no malolactic fermentation. Vineyards: 93% Santa Lucia Highlands, 5% Santa Maria Valley, 2% Edna Valley.

Sourced from cool Central Coast sites, this refreshing Chardonnay exhibits ripe pear, apple, and tropical citrus aromas and flavors, with delicate floral highlights and mineral undertones. It is full and round, with a juicy core of fruit and a mouthwatering finish. It makes a thirst-quenching aperitif and will complement a variety of foods. Item #232460

Platinum Selection Plan 1 $49.95

2 Bottles of red wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 1 features two bold reds which will surely satisfy any wine lover. We include top wines from prestigious wine growing regions.

Sevilen 2012 Kalecik Karasi Red, Turkey - We think the most fun about wine is to discover something that is totally under the radar and, of course, absolutely delicious. Our "other imports" wine buyers do a fabulous job discovering these unknown treasures. This red from western Turkey features everything we love about wine. It is made from Kalecik Karasi (pronounced Kah-le-dji-car-ah-ser) a Turkish grape variety which is in texture and taste very similar to Pinot Noir. It is rich, well-balanced, and has a lasting aroma of red cherry fruit and baking spices such as clove and cinnamon. We hope you give this unusual red a chance. You won't be disappointed. Serve this with burgers, eggplant, stuffed peppers or souvlaki. Item #372099

San Liege 2012 “The Offering”, Santa Barbara County - Owner/winemaker Curt Schalchlin has rapidly made a name for himself within the "Cal-Rhone Community" as one of the best producers of Syrahs, Grenaches, and blends. His Groundwork label (see our November newsletter) presents one heck of a value, and while that is no slouch, the Sans Liege wines really showcase his abilities.

"The Offering" is comprised of 48% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 17% Mouvedre and 1% Viognier, aged in new, once-used, and neutral French oak. The grapes came from several notable vineyards in Santa Barbara County, including Larner, Bien Nacido, White Hawk, and Watch Hill. The 2012 Offering is a wine that captures the imagination and challenges expectations; it displays a beautiful purity and depth that is reminiscent of having a summer picnic in an ancient church. It shows aromas and flavors of flowers, blueberries, cream, wet earth, boysenberry, raspberry, camphor, and white pepper. Item #257740

Platinum Selection Plan 2 $49.95

1 Bottle of red wine and 1 bottle of white wine
(tax & shipping not included)

The Platinum Selection 2 is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We showcase two outstanding bottles, one white and one red from world-class vintners.

Gini 2012 La Frosca Soave, Italy - The Gini family has roots in the Soave Classico region dating from the eighteenth century, and owns 25 hectares of vineyards situated on the very best hillside position of the appellation. Extremely low yields, low-interference viticulture, and devoted attention to expression of the particular crus results in wines that are not only among the greatest Soaves but also among the great white wines of all Italy. Olinto Gini and sons Sandro and Claudio have now finally completed their beautiful new cellar, which extends deep into the rocky and tufaceous hillside of Monteforte d’ Alpone, thus proving optimal natural temperature and humidity control.

Made from 55-year-old vines, this Soave is one of the flag bearers of the denomination. It opens with enticing floral and mineral aromas together with a whiff of pears. The elegant, linear palate delvers golden apples, citrus, and white peach alongside almond and mineral. It’s already crisp and delicious but it will also age. Item #303119

Champagne Selection No More Than $44.95

1 Bottle of Champagne
(tax & shipping not included)

The Champagne Selection is a special gift for the discriminating connoisseur. We will showcase artisinal discoveries in French Champagne.

J. Lassalle Brut Rose, Champagne, France - The sales of this Rose have skyrocketed in recent years and there have been long stretches when we just couldn’t get any. We don’t mind this a bit because it means that Angleine Templier isn’t taking any short cuts that would comprise its quality.

JOSH RAYNOLDS 93 POINTS - (50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier; no dosage; disgorged on April 19, 2013; L0110): Pale yellow. Powerful nectarine, pear skin and lemon zest aromas are complicated by chalky minerals and white pepper. Vibrant orchard and citrus fruit flavors are given spine by tangy acidity, picking up spice and floral character with air. Powerful yet lithe and precise, finishing with excellent clarity and length and lingering chalkiness."-Jan 2015

CHAMPAGNE GUIDE 94 POINTS - “A tiny dose of red wine [6%] creates a gorgeous pale salmon hue, enlivening a dainty and fresh rose with a fairy touch of rose petal perfume that wafts from the start of the bouquet to the lingering finish of the palate. Lively strawberry hull and elegant red cherry fruits are invigorated by bright acidity and gentle minerality, meshing seamlessly with soft dosage.”
